fred's boy george thing on weekend update was really funny.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 7 December 2008 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

The euro-rap digital short was one of the best looking (and sounding) ones yet.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 7 December 2008 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Fred's Obama impersonation is getting slightly better too. xp

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 7 December 2008 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

And according to the Youtube version of it, it's the first single from The Lonely Island's debut album.

SNL: just the funny parts

boy george

k3vin k., Monday, 8 December 2008 00:36 (fifteen years ago) link

trying to remember the rest, but that was abt it

k3vin k., Monday, 8 December 2008 00:36 (fifteen years ago) link

the problem i've been having with snl recently more than anything is the lack of good endings to their sketches. i find myself saying "ok, this isn't sucking...ok, this is actually funny" to certain sletches and then the ending is just super boring/unimaginative/cliche that it leaves me cold.

k3vin k., Friday, 12 December 2008 04:21 (fifteen years ago) link

well, they've gotten into the habit of not writing endings (or writing really arbitrary ones just to get out of it somehow), but it's still better than 5-10 years ago when even the good sketches seemed to just drag and drag for twice as long than they had a right to.

Anne Dwutt (some dude), Friday, 12 December 2008 04:52 (fifteen years ago) link

oh my god wtf kanye

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:11 (fifteen years ago) link

this is really really really bad

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:12 (fifteen years ago) link

omg omg omg fred armisen is the best

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:21 (fifteen years ago) link

fred armisen <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 luv u 4ever

shamwowllionaire (get bent), Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

piano intro to lamps sketch reminds me of "inca rag" by FF

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought that cat sketch with Wiig and Laurie was funny.

Mordy, Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i thought so too. this has actually been a good episode filled with really smart sketches! i still think the biggest problem is bad endings

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm lolling at this gay guy eating cookies sketch too.

Mordy, Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:49 (fifteen years ago) link

that was great! kenan thompson killed it as always though.
hugh laurie has a great american accent too! i never even knew he was british

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:51 (fifteen years ago) link

whoops
"killed it" = sucked

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:51 (fifteen years ago) link

so, should i just wait until this is torrented, and then skip about? I keep waiting for them to involve Stephen Fry whenever Hugh is on

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Sunday, 14 December 2008 06:13 (fifteen years ago) link

it was a good episode but kanye's perfs seemed endless (and bad)

shamwowllionaire (get bent), Sunday, 14 December 2008 09:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I just wish he did "Love Lockdown" live with like 15 drummers instead of singing over the track in front of a big video screen

vermonter, Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:09 (fifteen years ago) link

ya that was weird - he brought the drummers for like ellen and conan but not snl wtf?

merriweather passantino pavilion (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:10 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, good point. i thought the episode was one of the better ones this season, though. fred armisen is really on fire recently

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I think his weak Obama and the sameyness of a lot of his characters had me pretty sick of Armisen lately but he was good last night.

never been a huge Poehler fan but I'm gonna miss her on Weekend Update, especially "Really!?! with Seth & Amy." I wonder if they're gonna have Seth hold it down solo or put one of the newer girls at the desk.

It is the farewell kiss, you dog! (some dude), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

armisen was MVP of this episode definitely, paterson insulting jersey was major lolz

lol cool j (donna rouge), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link

he should probably go solo for the time being. i know a lot of people hate on weekend update, but for me it's easily the most consistent part of the show.

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

lol i mean besides obv that it is the only thing ON every week

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah being a NYer i loooved his paterson. i thought the boy george last week was one of the highlights of the season too.
and i dunno some dude i like his obama. he's really got the arhythmic patterns down (almost reminds me of chris walken) and how he tends to end sentences at a faster pace and a louder volume than the rest of the sentence. maybe it's a bit too OTT though

k3vin k., Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:25 (fifteen years ago) link

his Obama is improving based on last week's "cool" sketch, but it's still not good enough.

It is the farewell kiss, you dog! (some dude), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i see it as a continuation of SNL's tradition (with a couple of exceptions) of just not being able to pull off good presidential impersonations

lol cool j (donna rouge), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:42 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno, maybe you don't like Carvey's Bush, Hartman's Clinton or Ferrell's W as a matter of personal preference, but there's pretty much no way you can spin Armisen's Obama as not being a step down from those (assuming Michaels doesn't eventually give in and hire a black guy other than Kenan in the next 4 or 8 years).

J0rban Sarggest (some dude), Sunday, 14 December 2008 23:47 (fifteen years ago) link

armisen's last big mountain to climb is mastering the smile. the fact that he never even tries makes me think it must be a conscious choice. but you aren't obama if you can't grin.

da croupier, Monday, 15 December 2008 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link

when i first started watching again I thought armisen and ESPECIALLY forte were horrible, but I like them 90% of the time now.

da croupier, Monday, 15 December 2008 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link

will forte's part on the "road trip confessions" a few weeks ago KILLED ME

the one w. paul rudd

k3vin k., Monday, 15 December 2008 00:41 (fifteen years ago) link

god i love that recurring singalong/anecdote bit

J0rban Sarggest (some dude), Monday, 15 December 2008 00:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i quite liked the new guy and will forte in the wedding toast sketch.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE - I THUMB THROUGH YOUR MAGAZINES (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 15 December 2008 02:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah...pretty dope episode considering that Hugh Laurie was surprisingly dull and didn't make me laugh once

J0rban Sarggest (some dude), Monday, 15 December 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i know a lot of people hate on weekend update

Huh? Most people watch it halfway through just to see WU and then tune out.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 15 December 2008 02:31 (fifteen years ago) link

weekend update sucks.

sonderangerbot, Monday, 15 December 2008 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

He seems like he would be a more believable senator than Mr. Franken.

Did he ever become *the* Whitney Brown?

He had a show on Air America for a bit and now writes for Daily Kos.

there's no need to beat a dead horse...

except for the sheer joy of it.

chattanooga xiu xiu (get bent), Monday, 15 December 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought it was a little over the line, but why didn't Paterson object when Armisen did the exact same bit on a Comedy Central special like 8 months ago?

Mankini Bay (some dude), Monday, 15 December 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Because no one saw it?
