Pretty excited about Book of David myself, bit of a Quik fan-boy myself.

^this; the early cuts are all great

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 3 March 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Rhythm-al-ism is my second favorite lp ever.

well shit! awesome. i still think ghetto extraordinary is one of the best rap albums that was never formally released

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Killer Mike is also supposed to have an album with El-P coming out this year

Number None, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

woah really? interesting mix there

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

would not have expected that!

Last Killer Mike I heard was some of that twofer he put out. there were a few good cuts on there (the track with Cube, surprisingly, iirc)

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Got that "bigger than hip hop" bass-line groove going on, which is always a good thing.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:51 (thirteen years ago) link

every rapper is always supposed to be putting out something

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

"every rapper is always supposed to be putting out something"

Valid.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Just thought i'd alert people to a potentially cool collaboration is all

Number None, Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

The G-Side was a physical release, right?

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Curren$y - Return to the Winner's Circle is another mixtape that didn't get listed (presumably because the talk of it was on his own thread, not in this one)

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:44 (thirteen years ago) link

squadda b - i smoke because i don't care about life (on mediafire too)

posted about this dude two days ago & just saw this linked on rnt. one of my favourite mixtapes of the year, these kids are insanely creative w/ production, some of which is breathtaking, beautiful. lots of delay & cut up vocal loops, and huge bass. i could see this getting big but i'm not sure if there's room for another group of kids making inspired rap music in a world w/ lil b & odd future

flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Just realised my fave gun sound track is...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qK5qU7t2WE

God's Gift verse espesh.

Back on topic... I've really been digging Squadda B's tape after track 5 at least and the first half of the recent Young L tape, it goes a bit shit by the second but this is mixtape land so its expected.

jimitheexploder, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I posted a link to a Clams Casino beat tape on the Lil B thread. It's got stuff he's done for these guys as well as B and Soulja Boy. Really impressive.

Number None, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

a yo jimi, its theShipment.

Been feeling that Squadda B a little. The bass is yanked on the mix, dig that.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago) link

these are my favourites in rough order of the tapes i've heard from the big list tpp posted w/ some others that weren't on it. i usually have a hard time keeping up w/ rap releases but i guess i've got a lot of spare time lately because i've heard most of them

yg hootie - flight to the motherland (weird that this is my favourite/most listened to bc in some ways it is kind of weak, but he's a really interesting rapper and i keep coming back to it)
raekwon - shaolin vs wu tang
squadda b - i smoke because i don't care about life
waka flocka flame - salute me or shoot me 3
killa kyleon - candy paint texas plates
gunplay - inglorious bastard
juicy j - rubber band business (thought this was last year)
young l - domo kun
mouse on tha track - swagga fresh freddie
travis porter - music money magnums
tity boy - codeine cowboy

some others i listened to briefly & didn't stick (trae, young dro) but might revisit. avoided gucci 2 times, still haven't gotten around to roach gigz, bricksquad, fiend, lil b

flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago) link

squadda b - i smoke because i don't care about life

gonna download

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Friday, 4 March 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

one song i wanted to share from that yg hootie tape is this one yg hootie - west hattnin which contains the perplexing lyric "i'm just licking and i'm gliding and i'm riding on the pussy niggas/i'm in the club on point & all my boys on point, we gone lick yo ass funk." so lol how it seemingly unknowingly pushes generic homophobia into a bizarelly aggressive threat to lick some dude's ass

flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and the project pat tape should be added to tpp's list, some great stuff on that

flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I <3 Spottie_Ottie_Dope

i smoke because i don't care about life

Is a bit good, spaced out, a bit freaky but man it sinks in after a bit.

Nice. I do have to say that going from all the visual puns during Wayne's part to none during Corey's just emphasizes how blah his part is in comparison tho.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:37 (thirteen years ago) link

that video is incoherent shit

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:40 (thirteen years ago) link

gunz verse is an abomination

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:40 (thirteen years ago) link

MAMA LIMA BEAN SURE THAT RHYMES MAMA LIMA MAMA LIMA

Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the gunz verse is all dazzle & no substance & that makes it worse than if it was some brain dead gudda gudda nonsense

i can't remember if i used this analogy before but it's like gob bluth doing magic on AD -- there's a bunch of smoke, but nothing happens

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:47 (thirteen years ago) link

there's not even that much dazzle -- description applies more to minaj imo

Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Not to defend Gunz' verse (which I could take or leave - Jordan otm about all dazzle, no substance), but I never understand when rap fans get all up in arms about weird slant rhymes.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:50 (thirteen years ago) link

weird slant rhymes?

I notice this is something of a hobbyhorse Al has.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Not that he is the only one.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:57 (thirteen years ago) link

approximate rhymes are plentiful and inevitable in rap and are often inoffensive or even clever and creative. and sometimes they're really dumb, and the rapper chooses to beat you over the head with it by opening a verse with one.

Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 04:19 (thirteen years ago) link

that line as i hear it is "Word to ya mama/ahm outta mah lima/bean" and there's enough slurred inner-syllabic rhyme there where it never bugged me

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 March 2011 04:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yes that's what the line is; my post upthread was not a serious attempt at transcribing it

Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

word to aunt jemima

flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 08:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the db tha general mixtape is weird

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 08:31 (thirteen years ago) link

super frenetic

how old is dude? i can't decide if i think he's a good rapper or not

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the young l tape a lot -- it has some filler but i think the stuff at the end is actually really good (barring "sex is dope") -- dude is pretty melodic as long as you have the stomach for autotune warbling

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I was disappointed to find out "Murda" is a straight jack from the Boyz n the Hood soundtrack.

people liking squadda b/main attraktionz should dig mr sche

the whirlwind of musical equipment, i exhale it

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 March 2011 23:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Absolutely, good luck getting a physical of either.

how much does "once upon a time in america" by smoothe go for?

i have a CD of it in great shape.

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Hadn't checked for a couple years, but it was going for around $50 then. looks like around 25 now. Not out of reach at all really, just more than I am willing to pay, especially since I already have mp3s.
