this^^ i feel like is a result of the fact that apple isnt as good at the internet as it should be - rumored me.com/itunes overhaul still hasnt arrived - basically there needs to be a free automatic aspect of yr ios device that lives in the cloud - imo biggest problem w/the whole situation

nobody is as good at the internet as they should be for this to happen. see tons of people running super outdated versions of android bcz the "last mile" ISP (read: cell phone company) hasn't bothered to push updates (takes up $$$ bandwidth)

El Tomboto, Saturday, 5 March 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Apple's in the best position to force that though. All it has to do is announce it's shoving itunes in a cloud and suddenly telcos will scramble to make sure they don't lose all their business. No Android manufacturer has that clout.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah obvs isps are terrible at the internet but if apple showered half the love and attention on teh net as they do on their devices we would already be living in an irl post pc utopia

i mean w/e this im sure is what their lol hueg new data center is for and itll all be done soon but still

ice cr?m, Saturday, 5 March 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Apple's just not very good at services and social imo, I mean look at Ping. Mobileme is ridiculous and has been for years and itunes is pulsing vomit.

Maybe they'll bring back ecards for iOS 5. Fukwits.

Don't think this two-year cycle thing is solid yet. When they were under pressure with G4s they churned out new cases every 18 months. iPods went even quicker iirc.

I've gone to some effort to reproduce it on 850 MHz and 2100 MHz networks and can't make it lose a single bar.

Also this isn't hard to do on every 4 I've seen. Better after the upgrade, but still possible to kill signal, especially in low reception areas. Don't think it's a huge issue (much better reception than 3GS) but all the butthurt Applers screaming on Twitter that it was totally impossible and only affected three ppl neway were way off.

stet, Sunday, 6 March 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link

how would they swing a bigger screen on the iphone 5 - wouldn't they have to lower the DPI in order to maintain compatibility with iOS? I know nothing of displays, btw

Neu! romancer (dayo), Sunday, 6 March 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah if it was physically bigger they'd have to lower the dpi. Don't see them making it bigger.

fred wilson is p otm abt re the superiority of androids notification approach http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2011/03/mobile-notifications.html

seems like that sort of thing just isnt in line w/apples vision for what ios is all abt tho idk

ice cr?m, Sunday, 6 March 2011 21:12 (thirteen years ago) link

otm post. Whatever Apple does it has to get rid of the disgusting pop-ups that obliterate everything you're doing.

Last week I saw a hacky iOS prototype showing a bar that sort of hangs from the top of the screen. The problem with that is that it hangs in front of the top row of apps on the home screen, which you can't access until you acknowledge/clear the notification(s). There's no way in hell Apple would implement such a thing but it's roughly 28,000 times better than the current 'solution'.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Sunday, 6 March 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Well unless you enlarge the screen specifically for notifications and multitask icons

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 6 March 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know, call me crazy but i prefer not to be notified at all and just look at the badge numbers

Nhex, Sunday, 6 March 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^ 1000 x this. I HATE being hassled every time I receive a bloody text. The whole point of a text is that you get to it when you're ready, not for it to stop you doing what you're doing.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Then you hit "close" and not "view" right?

Or do you really get pissed off when your phone stops doing EVERYTHING when a call comes in?

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

a phone call is not a text

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 7 March 2011 02:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Well yeah, but they're both phone-styled communications that people think have some importance.

I think there should be a "don't notify on new text message" option, though. I think of email and facebook messages and so on as more deferred, but I guess for many, text messages are deferrable.

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 02:46 (thirteen years ago) link

people text me important shit all the time

btw--i fixed the slowness in the maps app by turning off location sharing for it.

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Then you hit "close" and not "view" right?

Every single time.

Or do you really get pissed off when your phone stops doing EVERYTHING when a call comes in?

YES. Bloody thing needs to have a bar at the top or something (like the tethering bar) that says 'yu0 has a phoen call' that you can ignore.

Single best thing about ipads is that they don't do phone calls or texts therefore you can choose to be never interrupted by anything ever.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and max, if you're getting texts that must be answered RIGHT AWAY then your acquaintances are doing it wrong.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago) link

no

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:29 (thirteen years ago) link

calls are real-time, text messages are turn based, pretty big diff I think

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep. It's like people who send you an email then march over to your desk like 20 seconds later asking you why you haven't read it yet. If person A needs to speak to person B urgently why is person A sending a text ffs

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:39 (thirteen years ago) link

texts are much faster and more to the point than calls

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Schlafsack, have you considered just giving people a Google Voice number or whatever? I mean, it sounds like you don't give a shit about using your phone as a phone, and that lets you ignore most calls at your whim.

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

we don't have google voice here

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

if i have an urgent message for someone why would i call that person, wait for the ring, exchange hellos, give them the information, etc

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:57 (thirteen years ago) link

def, it makes much more sense to send them a text that probably gets shuttled to the background while the person is furiously engaged in playing angry birds

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 7 March 2011 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

its really not my fault that none of you have any idea how to use your phones

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

this is like when tracer was all bummed that he couldnt save drafts of his text messages

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

^^ real talk

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I have heard the youngs are getting thousands of text messages per day so it probably interrupts their angry birds and web browsing and suchwith, but I haven't had that prob yet.

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 04:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I liked it much better when the iphone just displayed the text of the text on the unlock screen, I guess they changed it to better protect privacy but you shouldn't be sexting in the first place, is my position on that

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 7 March 2011 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

OI I HAVE TO SPEAK TO YOU RIGHT NOW IMMEDIATELY THAT IS WHY I HAVE LEFT THIS MESSAGE FOR YOU TO FIND WHENEVER YOU HAPPEN TO LOOK AT YOUR PHONE

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 05:57 (thirteen years ago) link

you dont have to "find" text messages, your phone makes a noise, sometimes it vibrates as well

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 05:59 (thirteen years ago) link

noise & vibration last longer if you call y'know

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 March 2011 06:04 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, i know

ice cr?m, Monday, 7 March 2011 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd use airplane mode but I'm playing networked Carcasonne ffs

mh, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

If you're in wifi range, turn it on to airplane mode then turn wifi on. That way you can use Internet but not be interrupted by texts or calls.

dmr, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

We really need deferred text sending, just to make sure no one responds in the near term, right?

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

omg voicemails are the worst i never listen to voicemail

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link
