I think of it like that study about people with messy desks being organized, because everything is piled up in sight and they know where it is and it's sorted by how recent it is and not filed away all organized and alphabetized. Somehow I know that I just swipe over 2 screens to get to the stuff I want to read, but if I want a remote control for my audio software I go digging in the music folder.

so very true

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh man, I didn't mean to harsh your theme choice, but I mostly thought the theme wasn't really to my taste and the lock screen looked crowded.

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Like I can't figure out why it's showing anything at all when you don't have a SMS, Mail message, or Missed call.

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

ah see i like my lock screen that way, plus it helps for work. ive been playing around with themes a lot, there aren't very many nice ones for a 3gs. and im also testing out that plug-in for notifications...typically i use intelliscreen which only puts stuff on the lockscreen when i have some things.

i love this lockscreen design, just too much work.

much cleaner.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I saw that one a while back and was kind of impressed. I'm also on a 3gs, but just don't care enough to fuck with jailbreaking and installing extra shit.

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i like this one?

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

jailbreaking literally took all of 3 minutes.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

the main reason i jailbroke it was for BiteSms, which has quick reply, which is fucking great.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

They keep up on new versions pretty quickly these days, right? I just didn't care to keep up on what had/hadn't been jailbroken, etc.

I've also had iOS 4.3 installed for a while now and am too attached to the new streaming.

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah they get updated quick.

chris i think your first screen was fine and quite neat. Id move the folders to the bottom of the page but thats just me. I like your icons. It doesnt look like a toddler who has been eating crayons all day puked on your screen like mine does.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

why doesn't he just use airplane mode when he's being important cant be interrupted guy on his iphone? (xp)

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the idea is to make something that works better or you know just works - airplane mode or jailbreak customizations or w/e are hacky approaches that should ideally be unnecessary

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't jailbreak mine because I like my phone to be reliable and work and etc BUT as a decades-old Linux fanboy I love that jailbreaking exists and that it's come so far and continues to keep up. All of this screenshots make me quiver iirc.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd be down with that notification scheme. Better then the webOS-esque one everyone was blogging about a week or two ago.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

my phone is reliable and works like the day i bought it.

yeah that mobilenotifier thing didn't work with bitesms, so i got rid of it.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

xp The one that shares a screen with Spotlight? Yeah, it's the only one I've seen so far that isn't shithouse in some way (and even then the initial pop-up bar at the bottom is horrible).

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm still a bit weird about iphone jailbreaking because I've had friends who would have to restart their phones twice a day.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

IMO using the screen real estate available when you pull up the running apps bar would be pretty sweet.

mh, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

never have had to restart, plus now there are on the fly backups so if it does crash, it restarts with everything intact.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, that's pretty decent.

Re notifications: anything that blocks a row of home buttons is out. I don't know why people are even mocking up that shit.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i've never had any problems with my jailbroken phone

The perfect argument for jailbreaking

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I had an iPod touch that I used for approximately one more day after getting an iPhone because IT'S THE SAME DEVICE.

I can kind of understand people who carry around an iPod Classic or whatever since it has a much higher capacity, but even then, it seems kind of ridiculous to me.

mh, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

64gb would be a great size for me; wld let me carry around my main iTunes music library (w/out videos etc).

stet, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i have an 80GB classic but after i got an iphone i sort of forgot i own it

do you guys also carry around an iPad and a Macbook Pro

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

my 80gb classic is now my bathroom boombox

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i do carry around an ipad too....guilty. well my phone is 16gb, which is not nearly enough for my music...my touch is 64, which suits.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

one day when i have enough money i will carry around a macbook.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i carried around a MacBook Air, iPad and two iPhones the other day. It all weighed less than a PB G4.

stet, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I listen to my iPod touch all day at work and while commuting. I like to know that I'm not going to run out of battery on my phone. I carry it in my bag. My phone is in my pocket.

I also carry my Mac Pro around with me. It's strapped to my back with bungee cords.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

If I get a charger to keep in the office I'll probably ditch the iPod Touch for this purpose.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link

see there's thing thing called a "charging cord" that you can plug into your computer via a USB port or the wall via an adapter that will basically guarantee yr battery will never die

this is how I play my iPhone music library through my work computer's iTunes, and I only have to carry two electronic devices because I am segregating the work phone from the personal phone

xp: lol but I typed too much to discard *arms crossed*

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah see I have a charger which I use at work for my touch. Plus I'm constanty using my phone for work things since I'm on the road a lot. It's easier to carry both.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

And we aren't allowed iTunes at work.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I have an iPod dock at work but I never start iTunes! I use it for charging and for a line out port because I am a complete dork and have it attached to a headphone amplifier.

mh, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

One of the big irritations about the iPhone is I can't use it to keep my work and home iTunes in sync. Yes you can hack Itunes so two copies on different machines speak to it but unless you keep your sync settings and playlists exactly the same it ends up futzing with what is on the iPhone.
