One of the big irritations about the iPhone is I can't use it to keep my work and home iTunes in sync. Yes you can hack Itunes so two copies on different machines speak to it but unless you keep your sync settings and playlists exactly the same it ends up futzing with what is on the iPhone.

I stopped using my iphone for music when it became obvious that the 3G couldn't play music while it was doing anything else at all ever. That and I kept knocking it out of my hand when the headphone cable was plugged in. Also there's 90 Gb of music on my classic so

Also that time I went to Qld for two weeks and discovered on DAY ONE that that old iphone bug had hidden ALL MY MUSIC and the only way to fix it was to go home and sync.

Safari really does feel a LOT faster in 4.3.

JimD, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Interesting idea for the notification system.

juicebox, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

If I get a charger to keep in the office I'll probably ditch the iPod Touch for this purpose.

Yeah, just buy one of these for $5 (or a generic one if you trust that, for $1.70) and plug it into a USB port of your computer at work. Cheaper than getting a charger.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

hey is there a remote to control my docked ipod in the car.

It's getting closer but that's still a v small target for a finger and probably goes against every Apple HIG there is (let's pretend for a sec that Apple never breaches its own HIG).

Safari is definitely faster and personal hotspot has already saved me $150. WIN.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:05 (thirteen years ago) link

personal hotspot? is that a 4.3 thing?? I JUST bought mywi

ullr saves (gbx), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the verizon phone had it enabled off the bat, but yeah, it's an addition to the tethering for 4.3

mh, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

It is a 4.3 thing, I think it's dependent on your carrier though xp

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

It depends on when you signed up. I don't think they have any unlimited data plans now, just 200MB/2GB?

mh, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah. I have 3 Gb/month here and no tethering fee (hence $150 saving on ipad and kindle purchases).

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

ahhh. I got grandfathered in with unlimited data. sticking with mywi thx

max, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes. Grandfathered in with my original iPhone 1.0 plan

I got grandfathered in a year ago November. I think they cut unlimited data plans shortly after. Really hoping I can keep it and get a new iPhone later this year.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago) link

so basically this new ipad 2 has 512 mb ram \(^_^)/

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 10 March 2011 03:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Keep forgetting that there's another reason to get the 3G-enabled iPad - the wifi-only one doesn't have GPS. I know location-based services can do a reasonable job with base station triangulation in urban areas, but still.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2011 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link

the only GPS service is use is the maps, i disallow it on everything else.

The GPS abilities these apps have now is scary, as I've seen on my iPod touch - I guess Google is using the IP or something

Nhex, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:36 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean the non-GPS abilities? Touches and non-3G iPads use triangulation from known wifi hotspots in place of GPS.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:41 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not just the Touch stuff, I've seen other websites use the same Google maps triangulation too from my home computer

Nhex, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Has the location security settings moved to a more prominent place in 4.3 or am I just imagining it. I'm glad I did because now the Angry Birds won't know where I've hidden their eggs. (serious wtf does angry birds need to know my location for?)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 10 March 2011 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I let all apps know my location. It's wonderful and magical.

It did move though, yeah. Full breakdown here (ilounge does these really well, always worth checking in with them when there's a new firmware): http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-features-of-ios-4.3/

is there any news about uk ipad pricing? or when that will be announced?

caek, Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

International prices are unknown atm. Given your weak pound they'll probably be more expensive than the last ones.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i just got my hands on a mid 2007 aluminum body imac. its got 1gb RAM and i want to upgrade; is the difference between 4GB (which would mean buying 2x2GB) and 3GB (which would mean buying a single 2GB to slot next to the current 1GB) significant enough to be worth the extra $40?

max, Friday, 11 March 2011 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think more ram is always worth it and I wouldn't work with less than 4 these days.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 March 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

my old sysadmin's advice still holds, i think - "RAM is like money, you can't have too much"
