Which stylesheet do you use? (because I want to know and because polls need testing too, perhaps)

"Aw. Thanks nath. :)"

No way, dude, thank YOU. :-) How's it going anyway? Even though I'm online all the time - thanks to my iphone - I can't seem to get in touch with y'alls. :-)

might be worth noting that when I tried to vote while logged out I got an "Error Has Occurred, Try Again Shortly" message.

anything other than old.css looks horrible and wrong to me.

old.css

I like serifs.

old.css!!!!!

genital grinder (roxymuzak), Sunday, 14 September 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm using Standard Stylesheet for the time being. Several of them hurt my eyes, particularly the IBM one.

old.css, but keith.css looks pretty readable

gabbneb, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link

keith.css, easy. With the upgrade, I went thru and tested all the stylesheets just to remind myself and see what was new, and keith.css is still the most readable: Posts are differentiated by non-obnoxiously colored boxes, margins are healthy (I can't believe how many of the ILX stylesheet makers just don't get this), and the alignment is reasonable. It's not innovative or anything, but that's not really the point.

What could be improved: post divs should be white, so's to best blend with random pic pastes.

blueski remains my favorite

Eric H., Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Someone should tell blueski about margins.

==つ~~~(o)(o) (libcrypt), Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:57 (fifteen years ago) link

black.css easily wins the absolutely unreadable award, tho.

i really like what blueski looks like, but it gets all garbled on my machine

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I presume about 90 percent of the old.css votes are sheer nostalgia.

Eric H., Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link

If by "90" you mean "1", then yes.

style-monochrome.css: Standard Stylesheet in monochrome

cozen (cozwn), Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll cop to choosing blueski if for no other reason than all the other stylesheets' fonts are too big.

I wish keith.css didn't use Verdana, but otherwise that get's my vote now.

God, I hate Verdana. I should stop typing.

Convert your pencil into a large pole (caek), Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:34 (fifteen years ago) link

The problem with the fact that you can count on only about 10 fonts existing on all computers is that they're all pretty well shopworn by now. E.g., there are (to my knowledge) 4 sans-serif fonts you can count on being available to any graphical web-display device:

  • Arial
  • Verdana
  • Trebuchet MS
  • Lucida Sans
Only Arial and Lucida Sans are "guaranteed" Unicode -- ILX is UTF-8 -- and only Trebuchet MS isn't entirely stale to my eyes. A better way to handle fonts in CSS styles is to describe them abstractly: serif, sans-serif, monospace, etc., and let the user himself judge how tiresome these 4 fonts have become to him by allowing him the freedom to change them in his prefs. Sure, you'll wind up with Times New Roman doing work on computers where it should be Georgia, but if the user doesn't notice it, why should the web designer care?

I seem to recall that the next version of Firefox will contain dynamic font technology. (Does anyone remember Truedoc?) I suppose that might shake up the snowglobe a bit.

xp to libcrypt. Sure, I realize all too well that typographical options on the web are limited, Times sucks, Verdana is a screen font, the Typography unit at Microsoft is surprisingly sophisticated and well-funded for a company with such poor corporate taste, Eric Gill slept with his daughter and his dog, etc., etc., but I still hate Verdana.

Convert your pencil into a large pole (caek), Monday, 15 September 2008 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

xp, there's an IE version too: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/07/21/font-embedding-on-the-web.aspx

Convert your pencil into a large pole (caek), Monday, 15 September 2008 00:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I love Verdana but it is growing a bit tired.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Does old.css's win tell us something about some vague inherent conservatism or fear/dislike of change? Or is it simply the most useable/readable one of the bunch? Do new members also pick old.css when they experiment with their preferences?

StanM, Monday, 15 September 2008 07:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I expected the default one would win.

StanM, Monday, 15 September 2008 07:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, black Times against a white background doesn't exactly scream out to the rest of the office that you're posting to message boards all day. It could be a Word document for all they know.

I would like to add my vote for Kenan's style sheet although I missed this actual poll. It's so sleek and minimalist. Brings a level of class to Ilx I didn't think possible.

Hated like a city cop (Susan), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Thank you, though I can't take credit for the minimalist part. That's pretty much enforced by the html, and rightly so.

old.css should be the default - its ilx's trademark

Yeah making old.css the default seems sensible.

Matt DC, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

it's really really easy to change it tho... i wonder if noobs would naturally drift to old.css. it might be worth keeping the default as is for some sort of experiment there (ymmv re worth of course)

black.css for life!!

brimstead, Friday, 13 December 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link

I switched over to standard-dark a while back and it's been a good change, very easy to read.

My only gripe is with reading quote blocks on my phone. It formats them extremely narrow, so you only get a couple words per line.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 14 December 2019 05:31 (four years ago) link

Aww, crap. It looks like naus.css is broken because imageshack.us sold out. Any chance I could host that penguin .gif on the ilxor servers and amend the css to preserve that Aja/Dante legacy forever? It's not like anybody's ever going to use it.

john shopkins (naus), Saturday, 14 December 2019 07:59 (four years ago) link

Yeah - send it to stet @ ilxor dot com pls!
