Nice mix, BATTAGS!

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i know man! i lived in willits for a year or so before moving to victoria BC in september, so chillits is definitely a friend-of-a-friend deal

anything you recommend out of the other sets?

lucas pine, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah, you know the deal.

DF Tram - killer 4am ambient set, tons of weird samples & textures. great stuff. Tal M. Klein is funky downtempo with live guitar/bass/keys + laptop beats. Megan Hug is shoegazer with some electronics thrown in for good measure. Timmii is an interesting journey through a whole bunch of different stuff that manages to sound coherent when listened as a whole.

i'm still making my way through them myself so i'll post links to any other notable ones. those are the ones i remember from the party.

i would *highly* recommend going to the wikipedia page on chillits and checking out the 2003 recordings - Jonah Sharp and Mixmaster Morris absolutely KILLED IT (as much as you can at an ambient party i suppose). Morris' set has been a regular staple in my listening diet ever since, shit is legendary.

max, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

max, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

as though i could love toto any more

max, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:26 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks max!

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

you can find that key of dreams edit on this release.
funnily enough i found the original 12" yesterday, with full vocals and everything. i think i'm gonna try dropping that instead.

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

hey Vahid, is that your name i keep seeing on flyers around town (and like SF Weekly 'best DJ 2007' or some shit like that?)?

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

DJs don't develop a cult following in this town very easily - it takes a lot of skill, an ear for mixing, and positive energy to keep the gyrating hordes a-flutter. DJ Vahid is the real deal for our readers, and now that he's landed a gravy gig at 1015 Folsom, adoring dance junkies can hear a lot more of him.

haha no

i'm a humble high school teacher / grad student

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

tho i have lots of positive energy too

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

the real question is if you keep the gyrating hordes a-flutter

max, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

vangelis is totally the best, i copped a copy of the 12" off discogs w/in minutes of hearing it

deej, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

:) ok just checking!

deej, was it expensive? we've still got it in stock at amoeba...

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

that track is a great segway from chill to dance.

gr8080, Friday, 5 October 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

also, V4hid: do you play out at all?

gr8080, Friday, 5 October 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link

what else sounds like "caramellas"? i am so into this tune right now.

tricky, Thursday, 18 October 2007 02:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Has the A Mountain Of One debut disc been released yet? I see conflicting/confusing information about its release date on the internet.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 October 2007 04:26 (sixteen years ago) link

you can get it on amazon.co.uk as of oct. 6. i couldn't find it in any sf stores.

babedad, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:39 (sixteen years ago) link

expect it to hit SF in a few weeks, tops. forced exposure will be carrying it, i believe.

BATTAGS, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Sorcerer has done an exclusive mix for our site www.trackwerk.net which includes some unreleased material. I thought some of you guys might dig it;-

windsurf - light as daylight
camel - wing and a prayer

sorcerer - stixx
travis biggs - tebetan serenity
unicorn - rat race
leprechaun - loc-it-up
hatchback - carefree highway
johnny guitar watson - strike on computers
paul mccartney - sunshine sometime
richard schneider jr.- hello beach girls
windsurf - the big island

Also, the Hardway Bros now have a myspace

www.myspace.com/hardwaybros

A couple of new edits on there

Rotter3*, Monday, 22 October 2007 08:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i was just listening to that mix tonight. the johnny guitar watson track is great.

max, Monday, 22 October 2007 09:18 (sixteen years ago) link

FYI: The AMO1 debut disc, Collected Works, turned up on eMusic this morning.

I posted something about it on that message board, as well. I don't mean to seem troll-ish (if repeating posts is a sign of that). But I'm really pleased to see it made available, and I was asking about its release date a few posts upthread, so I thought it was worth mentioning here, too.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 22 October 2007 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link

man that sorcerer mix is fantastic!

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 07:13 (sixteen years ago) link

ay yo's - anybody know where i can get a copy of that first Claremont 56 12" - Mudd & Pollard "Villa Stavros"? I need that shiz.

BATTAGS, Thursday, 25 October 2007 00:42 (sixteen years ago) link

listening to the sorcerer mix right now and i really like it. marcos valle sounds a bit like steely dan. the only reference i could find for that tune was a jazzanova comp from last year. that travis biggs track with the harp is off the hook.

i bought the amo1 from piccadillyrecords.com (i would've bought from amoeba, but i couldn't wait).

tricky, Thursday, 25 October 2007 02:45 (sixteen years ago) link

s'allright, i still haven't been offered it by the distro who said they'd be carrying it, meaning we won't have it for two weeks at the *earliest*. can't blame ya. :)

BATTAGS, Thursday, 25 October 2007 03:59 (sixteen years ago) link

the sorcerer album is like falling in love for the first time.. probably my favorite of the year. those swoonful moments like that flute rearing its head, sprinkled w/piano dust in "divers do it deeper" or that glistening vaporized guitar in "blind yatchtsman".

i don't really see what's so balearic about it, though. i realize that soft rock was often mixed in with balearic sets, but i think there is a distinction to be made between the whole windsurf/sorcerer/hatchback sound and what studio/amo1 is doing. i'll elaborate on this more later... i can't think straight right now..

babedad, Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:03 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i can't find amo1 anywhere in the bay area

babedad, Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Sorcerer is more ''yacht rock,'' which -- admittedly -- is a genre where I can only say ''I know it when I hear it.'' I mentioned this above, but AMO1 is available on eMusic.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Man that mix is sweet The Richard Schneider track is great sounds like a mix of Brazilian/Balearic, beautiful stuff. Ends with some fantastic whistling.

oscar, Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

xp to battags, i'm sure you'll still sell some copies! and anyway, every time i hit amoeba and can't find something on my list, i walk out with five other things especially if i am looking for this style of music or nu-disco. i recently moved from sf so i don't get to amoeba as much as i'd like to. it's good for the wallet, but not for the music fix.

tricky, Thursday, 25 October 2007 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

big, big article on "cosmic disco" in the SF Bay Guardian this week - the cover story no less - with Arp, Sorcerer, Hatchback, our own Dominique Leone, & Lindstrom & Prins Thomas....

http://www.sfbg.com/entry.php?entry_id=4843&volume_id=317&issue_id=322&volume_num=42&issue_num=04&l=1

BATTAGS, Thursday, 25 October 2007 06:41 (sixteen years ago) link

btw tricky -- feel free to call ahead of time and ask for certain things - i can hold them or special order them for you, and it's nice to know what the demand is for a certain title before i order it...

BATTAGS, Thursday, 25 October 2007 06:42 (sixteen years ago) link

sounds good. right now i need a stylus :/

tricky, Thursday, 25 October 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Leone's MySpace page contains audio treats, but what about his sketchbook page? It turns out he's drawing, in his words, "a giant skyscraper-sized robot that streams music and scents into the air and every 10 minutes or so spews out free kittens.

ysi pls?

max, Thursday, 25 October 2007 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

no scanner! :(

Dominique, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:11 (sixteen years ago) link

how will i get the dominque leone album now that oink is gone

cutty, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:15 (sixteen years ago) link

From a giant skyscraper-sized robot that streams music and scents?

Raw Patrick, Friday, 26 October 2007 07:58 (sixteen years ago) link

So my feeble attempts at convincing people that it should be called Space Disco or something because Cosmic means something entirely different to people aware of that scene has failed. Wait, the article does call it Space Disco.

dan selzer, Friday, 26 October 2007 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link

I hear the Rundgren on your Myspace page Dominique for sure. Claire could be A Wizard, A True Star outtake.

dan selzer, Friday, 26 October 2007 15:02 (sixteen years ago) link

leprechaun - loc-it-up

:D

deej, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

max, Thursday, 1 November 2007 01:16 (sixteen years ago) link

balearic joy overload moment of the day/week/year: the period from 4:00 to 4:22 in rune linbaek's disco dub of montee's "i have seen the haven" (hint: see http://talkinginstereo.blogspot.com/2007/11/version-rune.html)

jermainetwo, Saturday, 10 November 2007 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Essential Purchase: Kaoru Inoue - Secret Field

Even the name works perfectly! The original is this very slightly discoid wander through flickers of guitar and percussion, while Todd Terje gives a lovely remix that's like the very best stuff on the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas album.

Tim F, Friday, 23 November 2007 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

very late to the party on this but i can't stop listening to "freefall" by a mountain of one. like spirit of eden-era talk talk in self-indulgent pink floyd fanboy mode or something. gorgeous! (i've also only heard the 1st ep)
