well everything on it 'ruined it' but his sound clearly drove the conception

timbo slice (D-40), Friday, 1 April 2011 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah you can spot his beats NOW that he's flooded the market and very specific sounds/patterns have been repeated over and over, but i mean the whole thing where bmf/hard in da paint dropped and people acted like dude had a new sound just has me forever scratching my head

kl0pson (some dude), Friday, 1 April 2011 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

that is, compared to something like "superthug" or "a milli" that made a lot of its impact virtue of sounding like pretty much nothing else on the radio

kl0pson (some dude), Friday, 1 April 2011 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link

there is some weird intangible rhythmic thing about BMF where it feels like its going in slow motion that feels particular to him but id have to think about how to articulate it

at first i was put off by it, too

timbo slice (D-40), Friday, 1 April 2011 23:53 (thirteen years ago) link

the other day "BMF" came on and i was like okay i haven't heard this in a while, can i listen to this with fresh ears and maybe hear what other people heard? nope this is still boring inert awkward garbage.

kl0pson (some dude), Friday, 1 April 2011 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe freeway or styles p if i want to get my some dude on

if you're admitting those are possibly the 2 most consistent east coast cats of the past few years i'll take it!

ha i am & i do think that. they both broke earlier, is the only strike against them (same w/ AZ)

timbo slice (D-40), Saturday, 2 April 2011 00:32 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it's a double edged sword, i admire the longevity of those cats (especially considering how hard a lot of their peers have fallen off) but they still feel more like vestiges of another era than vital current artists

kl0pson (some dude), Saturday, 2 April 2011 00:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not saying that lex or bangladesh feel pressured but that specific artists are specifically looking for "a beat that sounds like x hit" as opposed to working organically with a producer or w/e

Anyway I think Neptune's were pretty diverse in their apex & before their kokomo period

J0rdan S., Saturday, 2 April 2011 01:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno man i just think that's a very old problem for producers. think of how varied Lil Jon's productions have been and how eager artists must have been to get the next "Damn" or "Goodies" in 2004

sarraghmaclachlan (some dude), Saturday, 2 April 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

sarraghmaclachlan (some dude), Saturday, 2 April 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

title sounds suspiciously like a Lonely Island joint

Dear rappers,

Every time your friend with a decent digital can and final cut pro does a video for you that goes straight to youtube, it does need a pretentious "street cinema productions presents" logo at the beginning and a 2 minute intro of dialogue setting the scene for your groundbreaking clip of you rapping in your car and in a club with some models.

I May Have Made This Point Before

timbo slice (D-40), Saturday, 2 April 2011 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

berner feat ampichino, freeze & smiggz - i play to win

dope beat from dj fresh but the chorus is sounding mad ham-handed to me, it needs to be less foregrounded or something

timbo slice (D-40), Saturday, 2 April 2011 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

haha reading the complex e-40's fav tracks article, man that 'automatic' video feat. fab is so great
