It's not an "album" though, which is what the indie crowd tends to respond to.

idk erlend oye dj kicks did pretty well w/ the indie crowd iirc

Yeah but he covered The Smiths

see how it works?

Sad to think that we've made so little progress in the decade-or-so since "Radio Soulwax Part 2".

Is the Wolf & Lamb album (their artist album not this DJ Kicks) any good? It's in my list of "things I'm going to download and listen to when I have a proper chance".

There is no such thing as progress in music

colby, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean in convincing people to be more open-minded... I also think the last Robag Wruhme mix compilation with the name I can't spell or pronounce would have been easy crossover material though, maybe I don't know anything.

You need a narrative with these things, hence the Villalobos Fabric mix getting some of that kind of press.

Number None, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Indie peeps get interested in dance music once dancing no longer seems like the central point. Hence the Field being the biggest Kompakt artist for that crowd.

Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap are both way too connected with actual dance crowds. They've definitely crossed over with the coolsy dance types though, to the point that people complain about them getting the hype that ought to go to steffi or Tom trago or etc.

ah ok!

not sure there is ever any progress in that either:D

i def. agree that these guys are about as buzzed as it's possible to get within dance music (without the rare indie crossover). they really hit a personal sweet spot for me though, playing lots of music i really love that you don't normally hear at these kind of nights.

also love that whenever i've seen them play they look like they are truly having the time of their lives behind the decks.

Bits of the DJ Kicks mix really remind me of 2006ish Get Physical but filtered through a post-Balearic horizontal afternoon drinking in the sunshine vibe.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 April 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

wow they play spottieottiedopalicious! i have a beats in space but i am v impressed by that.

this is a really good point actually...and the way they've created a way for things to be mixed together again.

Lots of fresh sounding DJ-Kicksy material rubbing up against Glass Candy, Depeche Mode and Madlib, amongst others.

Also just spent a good hour browsing about Soul Clap's website/blog, they seem to have a lot of podcasts and whatnot that can be downloaded.

Not quite on the same path musically, but they've done this amazing mix to promote a night they did a few months ago, based on 90s house sounds and just on the right side of cheesy. There's a Tuff Jam remix of Coolio (!) which sounds absolutely vicious in this context.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Sunday, 8 May 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

i've been getting a lot of good mileage out of the 5 years at the marcy mix since it came out... it's a hell of a lot of fun

I was at the U Street show too, they always seem to have such a great time playing! Please let us know when you up that recording

erschloraque, Monday, 9 May 2011 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

Whe recording came out well from a technical standpoint, now we've got to edit it and get their approval before sending it into the wild. I'll post it here if & when we do!

I DIED, Monday, 9 May 2011 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

thanks!

avinha, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

They put out their own podcast (Wolf and Lamb radio) where they sporadically put out mixes or live sets from people on the label. I think my fave is an old one Zev live at the Bunker which was one of my intros to them. Totally worth checking out.

Michael_Pemulis, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:21 (twelve years ago) link

thanks for the recs guys!

that Marcy 5 Yr mix sounds pretty shit as far as encoding/quality goes. is there a better copy than the one posted above?

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

really like that warpaint remix from the essential mix

just sayin, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

I know there's some talk of Night Plane over on the techno/house thread but it's definitely worth mentioning him as one to watch. "Str8 2 Ur Heart" is noir-Balearic excellence and his Soundcloud has a lot of promising stuff on it.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

The Nightplane track on the Social Experiment mix ("Parallel Lines") sounds awesome in that context. As does Benoit & Sergio's "Principles".

Tim F, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

yea sr8 2 ur heart is great!

This Soul Clap album isn't exactly unpleasant but kinda dull at the same time? Like it simultaneously feels halfhearted and like it's trying way too hard.
