ty, DG.

If it's mid-cycle, then I guess the Air still has a core 2 duo for powersaving reasons then? Is 2gb ram really enough?

I am getting a MBP replaced on the insurance, and I'm wondering if they'll let me switch to an air.

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 16:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Got a 2gb 11" here and it's really pretty fast. never have felt need for 4gb or faster proc, ssd makes up for a lot. I only use it for work stuff though, not 000s of RAW files etc.

stet, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I always end up running a monster IDE or vmware or something, 2gb seems really limiting even for just web browsing, to me.

mh, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd be amazed if the air was anywhere near the middle of a cycle. they have a lot more products due an update before they revise that.

im dying for an imac with thunderbolt

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Good chance 10.7 will be built for an iOS way of computing (on an architecture level, not just interface). Perhaps it's worth waiting for that to appear. A5-alike chips in Airs would be interesting.

snythpop revolution (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm assuming you mean hardware when you mean architecture? That's not really an iOS way of computing, that's just putting multiple platform support back in by supplementing x86 with ARM or whatever else. They took away PPC support, adding ARM wouldn't be that bad.

mh, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah I mean the architecture of the 10.7 OS could take advantage of iOS-type chips, given the UI is already going that way. The next lot of Airs could well use an A5-like chip to really help cut down size/expense/power consumption.

snythpop revolution (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

By being cut down or optimized, or what? I'm kind of confused what you're going at, but it might be because I'm a programmer and am thinking in different terms.

For what it's worth, 10.7 server edition is going to be on the same disc and be an install option, so it's not like they're removing much.

mh, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Trying to decide between a 13" pro and a 13" air. I don't think I have the chance to wait (depends on the insurance company). atm I'm thinking the air, because I'll never know the difference performance-wise, plus I can always upgrade the ram.

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Can you?

VitaweatavegemiteGrrl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:14 (thirteen years ago) link

actually no, thanks good point. probably worth getting 4gb as an option at purchase then.

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Also consider that the Air doesn't have a CD/DVD ROM slot (if you even care in 2011, although MS Office only comes on a disc iirc) and the 11" doesn't have an SD card slot.

VitaweatavegemiteGrrl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh and the MBP is cheaper and has more stuff.

VitaweatavegemiteGrrl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Basically if you're not sure get the Pro.

VitaweatavegemiteGrrl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:27 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm I would say the opposite but I guess it really comes down to how much you value portability

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:32 (thirteen years ago) link

you can get office as a download now, and no, I don't care too much about cd/dvd.

It's a replacement for a £1300 pro (which I initially won in a competition), so I can get the 13" w/ extra ram.

so it comes down to light vs. heavier, core 2 duo vs. i7, flash vs. 500gb, and graphics.

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Airs are amazing. The lovely Emma B has one and it really has gotten to the point now where, it's like, if you can throw your computer in your bag and not realize it's there, weight-wise, how much further does "lightness" matter in a computer?

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 April 2011 11:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah I mean the architecture of the 10.7 OS could take advantage of iOS-type chips, given the UI is already going that way.

i don't understand this.

caek, Thursday, 14 April 2011 11:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Airs really are amazing. 13" Pros seem like something from 2002 in comparison

stet, Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Oi, I love my new 13" (SSD) Pro. 2002 was never like this.

Alba, Thursday, 14 April 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

True, it's the SSD that makes the difference.

stet, Thursday, 14 April 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

caek, I think AA is coming from some sort of gestalt theory of how a macintosh is formed instead of recognizing how hardware and software work.

mh, Thursday, 14 April 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

good work being patronising there

snythpop revolution (Schlafsack), Thursday, 14 April 2011 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I failed, I meant you and not AA.

Sorry, Autumn Almanac!

mh, Friday, 15 April 2011 04:02 (thirteen years ago) link

But in all seriousness, I did ask for clarification upthread.

mh, Friday, 15 April 2011 04:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, Autumn Almanac!

That's okay, mh!

Perhaps I wasn't clear because (a) I'm coming off an illness and (b) I'm smashing off quickposts at work. The 10.7 UI has been influenced by the iOS UI in many ways (the effectiveness/shallowness of which is probably up to interpretation). My point was that the ~guts~ of 10.7 could well be rebuilt to properly take advantage of the sorts of chips that go into iOS sorts of devices. I don't know, perhaps OS X is designed in such a way that it can exploit a whole new chipset (CPU, GPU, whatever) without a major release, but from a requirements perspective it does seem logical that Apple would, taking into consideration the iOS stylings from a visual standpoint heads up going forward, choose to debut A5 etc support in Lion, thereby delivering this whole release as the first to run on what could well be a near-future release of the new iAir i.e. essentially an ipad + keyboard with a price to match. Look I don't know, perhaps iOS and OS X are now forks of the same lump of crazy gravy that is The Apple Operating System Of The Future in which case I would be talking shit, but if we knew that to be a fact then it would mean that Apple's wall of secrecy has failed and we wouldn't be having this discussion in the first place.

snythpop revolution (Schlafsack), Friday, 15 April 2011 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link

The guts between iOS and OS X are the same -- iOS is built on the same core as Mac OS X (which was built on the same core as NeXTSTEP).

Changing from PPC to Intel chips was just a point release. In theory there could be an ARM-based Mac, but it would need another version of Rosetta to run all the intel apps out there, and they'd run slow and you'd lose the point of the Arm chip in the first place.

stet, Friday, 15 April 2011 11:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Lovely, cheers.

My point was that the ~guts~ of 10.7 could well be rebuilt to properly take advantage of the sorts of chips that go into iOS sorts of devices.

As stet mentioned, iOS is a branch/derivative of OS X. The problem with A5 and such is that there are actually fewer things there to take advantage of! It's a low-power chipset that has a high level of integration, but all things considered, it doesn't have all the features of an i7 or even Core Duo chip.

Apple has never made a secret of the fact that iOS is the same core. It's kind of painfully obvious considering the tools for development are public, and even before that was provided, people jailbreaking devices were able to take advantage of their knowledge of unix/OS X to do what they do.

DG, all reputable sources are saying it's going to be at least September before we see new phones. :/

fwiw, this is the part that confused the hell out of me, because Apple has never kept this a secret!

new iphones in sept makes me hope-think that ipod touches will get a cell chip. unlikely, i know, but i hope so much!

does anyone have the 2010 unibody mac mini? what's the performance like?

DG, all reputable sources are saying it's going to be at least September before we see new phones.

thankfully. maybe they can make some computers in the interim.

jed_, Friday, 15 April 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

can't. too busy putting some iphone gesture bullshit into os x and calling it 10.7.

caek, Friday, 15 April 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Mission Control, Versions, and the Resume functionality look ok!

mh, Friday, 15 April 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, cheers for that iOS Core link, I had no idea Apple was telling everyone about it. So if the iOS/-X monster core is already built tough and A5 is just a chip that does fewer things then that person upthread should just buy whatever it was that (s)he was going to buy before I got involved.

I made a second account to use from work (for a host of reasons, none of which involve socks) but gave it a stupid name and now I'm stuck with it.

two weeks pass...

Sounds like rubbish to me but http://unplugged.rcrwireless.com/index.php/20110503/devices/8804/hot-rumor-apple-ipad-3-to-be-fully-3d/

[...] Apple’s third generation tablet, already in the advanced planning stages and very much 3D, we’re told.

“The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert,” one Hollywood insider close to the big movie studios told RCR, adding that the screen would be the real magic. She went on to say that the big film studios were currently running around like blue arsed flies trying to gear up to release plenty of 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch.

yeah, there's absolutely no way.. the ONLY 3d thing i can imagine apple would consider for the ipad is the eye-tracking pseudo-3d stuff
