at least westeros' weird seasons thing invalidates the "she had seen barely thirteen summers" sort of thing because you just know he'd be dipping in that well like once per page

I was surprised to learn that he uses the word "fuck" in the books.

for anyone who's watching this without reading the books and wants to get all the characters/houses/history straight, HBO has a great little viewers' guide that doesn't appear to spoil anything that's not pre-episode-1 backstory:

It was distracting how white Drogo's teeth were.

Nah, the third book goes into great detail re: Dothraki dental plan.

i just watched the 25 minute making of that's on the HBO site (still having not seen the first ep) and I gotta say the guy who plays Drogo seems like a bro in all senses of the word.

Someone else I was watching it with said this! What I noticed mostly was that his breasts are bigger than Danaerys'.

VegemiteGrrl, Monday, 18 April 2011 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

OK watched it - was good! Also posts very much in character but Laurel otm re the wolf pups omg. The end was great too. I didn't have a problem with the nudity/boobage but I was a bit fan of Rome which has tons of that sort of thing so maybe I'm just used to it. I want the next one already! Damn.

ENBB, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 00:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah see I have enjoyed Rome, Deadwood, all the HBO stuff...maybe it was more "boobs in broad daylight" then that was giving me hangups? Dunno.

Biggest WTF moment - "The Dothraki have no word for thank you"

Number None, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 00:58 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, why is that wtf? Irish Gaelic doesn't have a word for "no." Sort of. There are workarounds, but there's no direct translation for a flat No.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

I'm Irish funnily enough. The line wasn't in the book and it just seemed really cheesy.

Number None, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:12 (twelve years ago) link

Haha ilx being what it is, I wondered right after I said that if I was carrying coals to Newcastle. Haven't read the books in years so I can't remember exactly what was in them.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:17 (twelve years ago) link

It was just like, really, that's the line you decide to add?

Number None, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

you know damn well what was in the books--sex, violence and the occasional supernatural threat.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

and richly colored doublets

VegemiteGrrl, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:29 (twelve years ago) link

YES but not line by line.

Actually watching the first ep reminded me of so many parts of the story that have really long and complex lines to play out. Some things are lengthy but straightforward, you can sort of see the gears turning already, but some things have SO MANY TWISTS TO GO and I'm feeling a slight tedium already because I know they just aren't fruitful lines of hope or progress for the characters.

For those wondering about Theon, he apparently does come into a lot more in the first six episodes. I reckon he'll have an awesome payoff in the books down the line as well.

Not great opening numbers, tho. Of course. I can't remember the last time a show I liked got great numbers.

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

The obvious expense of the show made a second season almost inevitable. It would have needed Terrier-like numbers to not get renewed. There's enough promise that I hope it builds an audience and does well. It looks like the kind of story I'd like to see through.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

It'll do well on home video. All scifi/fantasy stuff does.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

the tra-la-la-la-la high fantasy stuff was a bit out of control. the stupid dothraki wedding looked like it was dreamed up by a 13-year old with a boner and a bad understanding of sex.

they call him (remy bean), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not sure if you can fault the show for that though, it was pretty faithful to the description in the book. I mean, if you are objecting to the way it was shot or whatever, fair play, but I don't get people faulting the show for staying faithful to the source material.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

"it was like that in the book" isn't an excuse for a film version sucking

there are many ways that scene could've been shot, and the way they decided to go was cheeeeze

Thats why I was asking, I was trying to understand why it bugged remy. The concept in general?

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

conceptually there isn't anything wrong w/ a timid girl getting thrown into the midst of a savage culture, but the execution here was laughable

i agree with edward the concept is fine – in the book i'm okay with with the dothraki. in the pilot, there were certain editorial decisions w/r/t importance of various salacious bits that took precedence over what i would value in a good story. i.e. the ... lingering on the sexiness (for the sake of sexiness) rather than as indicative of the power relationships between dany, vis, and drogo. i mean, the whole incesty boob-grab played as soft-focus porny rather than upsetting and manipulative.

they call him (remy bean), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

i agree with edward that the concept is fine.

get the feeling daenerys wasn't cast based on acting chops either, it's like the director said "you're forlorn eye candy, ACTION"
