my stomach felt like it was playing "Putnam's Camp" by Charles Ives during the night. I was really nervous cuz a friend of mine had a stomach virus recently and I was afraid I got it. in a condo-esque hotel, so I had nothing I could take as the lobby is a mile away.

fortunately it was mild, but like, are there any good natural remedies for this (sour stomach) in situations where I can't get antacids/other products?

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 April 2011 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Ginger, in whatever form you can find it (including ginger ale).

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 23 April 2011 14:07 (thirteen years ago) link

oooh forgot about ginger ale. thanks!

a flat sprite/7-up also helps.

ten months pass...

Argh. My wife and I were both struck on Monday night what we suspect was food poisoning from something we ate on Sunday. I hate the fact that this afternoon I'm *still* feeling spacey and sluggish and without much appetite. Get better, self!

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

yep same here, apart from my not having a wife. if i did i assume she would have it too though, assuming we weren't so estranged that we never spent time in close proximity.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

six months pass...

This is a useful thread, thank you ILX.

1. Peppermint tea is not good for your stomach, it is an irritant. Ginger is good.

2. Has anybody tried Flagyl? My doctor friend has recommended I take it. It is a gentle antibiotic that she says has positive pro-biotic side-effects.

3. Do not eat whole roast suckling pig.

psyllium husks are very useful for bad stomachs, will help both runs & constipation.
Not sure where you get them from easily elsewhere than Galway. Think I've looked in London before and not found hem as easily.
Here they're in the health food shop in bags for something like €1.29 or €2

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

Are we talking food POISONING, eating spoilt food...or just a condition like gas or constipation? Because food POISONING, well, even if it isn't that severe, get that checked out!! Seriously, you might end up in a coma or WORSE.

I got food poisoning once on a stuffed mushroom and it was hell. Usually your whole body is involved. I thought I was going to die. It was on Thanksgiving. My family got me some type of sedative, like a Tylenol PM because I was vomiting so much and my fever was very high.

I don't know what I would take, but something to help you rest and lots of water if you don't see a doctor.

Slammed a cup of two week old yogurt and felt bad and crampy within 5 minutes, reported to the bathroom within 15

Ironically, the only milk I have trouble digesting is COCONUT MILK which c'mon you aren't even milk, why u gotta play me like that.

This flaw in my otherwise iron-clad GI system made travel in Sri Lanka a bit dicey, because there is delicious coconut milk in basically all of the delicious curries. After a while I worked it out so that I could be like "OK well if I eat this curry now, I should be OK for the 3:00 p.m. train."

what is a good transitional meal between the bananas & rice diet in the aftermath of the liquid shits, and normal greasy eating? bcz this is where i have been fucking up for ten days.

(i seem to be handling yogurt OK)

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 18:58 (eight years ago) link

oatmeal
mashed potatoes
a plain sandwich like turkey, or cheese

those are what helped me, idk how far along you are though

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

white starchy foods worked p well in all their forms

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

cheese, dairy seems dubious to me but i can try turkey tom'w

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link

I have never prepared oatmeal in my life, but ate it several times in Chicago cuz it's what the health cafe in the hotel was serving.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:20 (eight years ago) link

it's easy, even instant unsweetened packets where you add water would be ok

i only suggested cheese bcz you said you could handle yogurt, but def dont overdo the dairy

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

yeah i was not about to fall into a pizza

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

Do you have a microwave?

dart scar rashes (WilliamC), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

i do, couldn't live w/out it

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:35 (eight years ago) link

Oatmeal is dead easy then. Don't get that microwave crap in packets; even regular "old fashioned" oats are microwaveable. 1.75:1 water to oats ratio (ymmv), pinch of salt, nuke three minutes; add a spoonful of butter, splash of milk, sweetener of choice, handful of dried fruit.

dart scar rashes (WilliamC), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

Brat diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. But I also recommend psyllium husk which will help absorb liquid. Which you should be drinking a bunch of, regardless.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 July 2015 20:51 (eight years ago) link

heheh, you don't understand what constitutes "too much work" in the kitchen for me.

(ie, that) xp

yeah ive been doing the fucking BRAT diet since a week Thursday, and relapse every time i think im over it.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

i keep no butter or salt or sweetener in my home.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

psyllium husk, aka the main ingredient in good ol' metamucil

Upright Mammal (mh), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:56 (eight years ago) link

oh well, then
xp

dart scar rashes (WilliamC), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:57 (eight years ago) link

lol

i wasnt suggesting instant oatmeal bcz its *good *- i know my audience :)

pasta might be good to try

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 July 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

w/out the sauce?

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 July 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

yeah, tomato sauce would prob be too acidic

a splash of soy sauce or a little bit of olive oil for flavor? idk - i would say butter but since yr no butter you're on your own :)

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 July 2015 21:32 (eight years ago) link

cooled off cooked potato (has resistant starch which can soothe your gut), add some salt/olive oil

That sucks. A colleague of mine is out from work with food poisoning or stomach flu. I am really hoping it's the former.

Anyone in NYC for it recently? Brutal one and everyone's getting it

i’ll chopper you in some saltines & flat lemonade stat

had what felt like food poisoning but I think might have actually been lactose intolerance?

had cut out most dairy bcz of bloating etc, mostly on almond milk & very occasional 2% milk.
drank a big whole millk latte on xmas eve, 30 min later felt nauseous, barfed 30 min after that, got the chills & went to bed fully clothed & was barfing intermittently for the rest of the night. was ok by the next morning.
i had no idea it could do that!!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link

ugh, get yourself to the clinic if it doesn't get any better within a day!

still regret the time I just decided to ride it out and was puking for days
