Tallest in the morning, difference can be around half an inch, so maybe n/a has shrunk a bit?

Also things like posture can make a big difference. I have a bit of back pain at the moment and I'm sure that I'm a bit shorter than normal.

huh well i'm at work now but i'll measure myself in the morning and see what the deal is

that would be pretty dangerous, if i was shrinking in a bathtub. what if someone pulled the plug?

You are not shrinking, you are settling.

I am so glad someone else has read The Shrinking of Treehorn, because in my universe it is a major childhood classic but nobody I've ever mentioned it to had heard of it.
― russ conway's game of life (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 2 May 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link
just out of curiosity, have you measured yourself on a full moon?
― frogbs, Monday, 2 May 2011 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link
I thought it was a childhood classic too. Let's canvas opinion in a scientific way. Who else here knows of The Shrinking of Treehorn?
― Alba, Monday, 2 May 2011 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link
I read it as a kid, but I've forgotten the ending. Is it because he's been given a hand-me down jumper that's too big for him?
― got a whole lotta gloves (snoball), Monday, 2 May 2011 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link
No, he really is shrinking.
― Alba, Monday, 2 May 2011 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link
my dad used to make up bedtime stories about when he was a kid and was four inches tall and lived in a shoebox under his parents' bed. in these stories, he also had a brother named Fred (he has no brothers irl). I have never heard of "the shrinking of treehorn" however
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 May 2011 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link
I think he plays a board game that he gets from sending off for a cereal box offer and it makes him shrink for some reason. I can't remember how he gets back to regular size, sorry n/a. Maybe he plays it backwards or something.
― Alba, Monday, 2 May 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link
I have heard of 'The Shrinking of Treehorn' but only because my friend named his band after it. Never read it as a kid.
― emil.y, Monday, 2 May 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link
The Shrinking Of Treehorn is one of my childhood faves, along with Flat Stanley and Grimble. Haven't read it in decades but I recall his parents not noticing he's shrinking, or vaguely chastising him for it? I think child psychologists consider it an important book, not sure why.
n/a, bad posture seems likely? You'd probably notice a serious spinal condition tbh.
― Gully Foyle is my name (Matt #2), Monday, 2 May 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link
There is a scene where he tells his mother he's shrinking and she (totally not listening) goes "mmhm, that's nice dear" which was hilarious to Treehorn-aged me. Then iirc they insist he isn't for a bit and get cross with him for mentioning it, and then when they finally notice they get cross with him for not mentioning it sooner or doing it deliberately to mess them around or something.
NB to people who haven't read it: this is much funnier than I've made it sound! It is when you're six, anyway. Also, illustrations by Edward Gorey, at the less macabre but still eerily charming end of the Gorey spectrum.
Bad posture sounds likely. I sometimes suspect I'm an inch shorter than I used to be but I am a terrible one for the slouching. My mother would tell me persistent slouching permanently compresses the spine and I daren't look it up to see if it's an old wives' tale.
That or you just didn't have the tape measure pulled completely flat when you measured or something. I know that sounds stupid but personally I find it's easily done.
(Flat Stanley! Ahh.)
