RIP

markers, Thursday, 5 May 2011 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

mbp died :(

started making strange noises, guessing the HD is fucked. surprised it lasted so long, i made it out of two broken macbooks. everytime i took it apart i'd be left with a bunch of screws and no idea where they're meant to go, or i'd lose screws in the carpet or my shoe or something. the top keyboard bit is attached with 3 screws at the mo hehe

anyway, psyched about buying one of those new iMacs, my first new apple product. for any uk ppl andertons do excellent 0% finance options that i haven't seen elsewhere...

so i've been thinking about getting a new computer

macbook air seems ~amazing~ but i'm leery of its lack of juice. macbook pro 13" seems pretty ideal but i'd want an external monitor for it. but i just realized something: the price of a mbp is the same as a 21.5" imac (with better spec). and the cost of an external monitor is only hair less than the cost of something like an ASUS netbook.

tell me why it would be dumb/annoying/whatever to have a netbook/imac combo instead of a laptop/external deal?

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

also i searched for a 'netbook' thread and couldn't find one---what's the ilx hivemind think of them? all i do w/my laptop when i'm out and about is email/web stuff.

netbook+ubuntu = great

Latham Green, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

are there any netbooks that come with ubuntu preinstalled? or would i have to work around?

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

1) two systems = cognitive overheads, ime
2) different operating systems = pain in the ass, even assuming the one that isn't OS X isn't awful (it will be)

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:04 (twelve years ago) link

do you have any linux experience ?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

what do you want the netbook for? would an ipad cover your portable needs?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

probably, tbh

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

get that + imac then u madman.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

some of the sync issues go away, and you're not dealing with windows or a hobbyist operating system.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

that seems....reasonable

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

it's going to be ~$100 more than a netbook, but assuming you value your own time ...

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

what are you doing that a macbook air will not have the power for btw?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

video? video games?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

lightroom? A video game. just one.

no

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

hmm. LR was always fine for me on my 2008 macbook, which the current air is much faster than. i think you'd be fine with 4GB. you shoot raw right? might be worth taking LR and your library down to an apple store on a usb stick and trying it on a MBA. i think they'll cooperate with that.

air has a decent graphics card, almost identical to my MBP, which runs HL2, portal et al. fine.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

i'm thinking about an air actually.

i need 1 computer not 2, something i can tote to and from work every day (getting a bit sick of the 15" MBP in this regard). i use mine for some astro stuff but the horsepower requirements are qualitatively similar to LR + videogame type stuff. tbh the main concern is that you can only get it with a 256GB hard drive.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

bear in mind that for normal desktop use the air will probably "feel" faster than most other apple portables because of the SSD hard drive.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

My wife needs a new laptop and is thinking Mac for editing scores and storing music. I am assuming MBP over Air is the way to go re: storage/power/real estate tradeoffs?

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

i think the air only makes sense if you're travelling with it and you don't have big storage needs.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

that is my thought as well; also I have issues paying that much for a screen that small

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i've got a 2008 15" MBP right now as well, so really anything will probably be a huge improvement. and i'm sick of lugging this beast around as well.

i like the apple store/usb idea. and i suppose storage concerns could be met with external HDs?

xps my storage needs are photos (RAW, big) and music, which i keep on an external hard drive right now anyway. i think i travel with my laptop just enough to justify having one, but there's a part of me that thinks i might just be a better person if i didn't have a computer with me 24/7

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

mbp is great, and there are fantastic deals on refurb every tuesday. i don't see any reason not to get a refurb, unless you're begging for original packaging

remy bean, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

i always forget about refurbs

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

My wife has a 13" Air and it feels so much more snappy than my i5 15" MBP with 8GB ram and harddrive. I'm sure as soon as a splash out on an SSD, my laptop will feel just as responsive though.

She only uses the Air for word-processing and browsing usually, rather than the graphic, sound, and using virtual machines, so that will probably accounts for some of the difference too.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

remy bean, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

iPad pretty fab for web & decent for email / IOC posting à la this post; I need a laptop too bc I travel a bunch & right now can't really Tex on this puppy but maybe soon?

Euler, Thursday, 2 June 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

If Apple manages to slap an A5 chip into a cheap Air and doesn't sacrifice the ability to run multiple apps at once, bam, winnar.

Ernold Sock (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 2 June 2011 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

Air is like the definition of snappy. Screen is pretty great too: not too glossy and as much res on the 11 as the old 13 had. (13 is equivalent to the old 15" MBP)

can't wait for the new upgrades

guy i know is a senior engineer for seagate and can't say enough bad things about the long-term reliability of SSDs

hah maybe he's just looking out for his own job?

dayo, Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

was gonna say. they can't really be any worse than HDDs.

caek, Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

Big difference is apptly that when HDs die there's a reasonable chance a lot of the data is intact on the platter and can be rescued (for £££) while failing SSDs often fail hard and are unrecoverable.

stet, Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

well £££ is just it. hdd failures are, de facto, unrecoverable. i have never recovered data from a hdd with a mechanical failure.

had two fail in may btw.

caek, Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:34 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but regardless of whether you use SSD or magnets, you ought to practice good backup hygiene

dayo, Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:37 (twelve years ago) link

dayo otm, a dead drive is a dead drive, you all should be backing up like your life depends on it anyway

It's not like we could go to Islam (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 June 2011 00:40 (twelve years ago) link

what is "backup"?
