although it's a lot more punk rock + a bunch of other things, i definitely get a shabazz palaces vibe at times (mostly in the lyrics + flow, like on "culture shock" for ex).

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

I think he sounds like rza, especially on Spread Eagle Across the Block.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

atari teenage riot ... Techno Animal, Kill The Vultures, k-the-i

finding death grope a lot more enjoyable & fun than any of those precedents. like it sounds like it ought to feel oppressively angry and "harsh", but it doesn't. good times album imo.

and yeah, OP gif couldn't be more perfect

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

Its weirdly positive right? And the diversity of approach from song to song means it never bogs down.
Interesting that this is garnering straight up yes or NO responses.

Yeah, it's definitely in this SP/Spaceghostpurrp/Blunt Fang nexus of sonically abrasive underground rap, but way more aggro vocally than any of those. Anyone know where this guy is from?

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link

lol nice. year of the snitch was probably my most listened-to album of the year. it didn't bowl me over at first, but its endless parade of off-the-wall ideas--coupled with its uniformly hazy, blunted sonics--kept pulling me back in. i don't think i've seen it on a single year-end list :(

would love to see them go deeper into the psych-prog zone of dilemma

brimstead, Monday, 9 December 2019 00:12 (four years ago) link

money store is the one i listen to most often but ya easy best band of the last decade

flopson, Monday, 9 December 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

I should have absorbed more DG by now. Really, really, really liked The Powers That B or whatever the two-disc thing was officially called. The juxtaposition of the two not-very-similar discs somehow added something in itself. I even bought a physical copy fercrissakes, which is noteworthy for me nowadays.

But I have no recollection of hearing the stuff since then, nor NLDW for that matter. I've no real excuse...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 9 December 2019 02:36 (four years ago) link

Definitely a band that felt uniquely important and new. An actual next stage of punk. Seeing the crowd that showed up to their shows kinda ruined some of it for me though. Looked like a 4chan meetup.

circa1916, Monday, 9 December 2019 02:47 (four years ago) link

ha, i heard someone describe them as incel music and i was like ewwwwww but i still kinda like them

peloton for the painfully alone (m bison), Monday, 9 December 2019 03:28 (four years ago) link

Yeah I don’t put that on them, just kinda made me re-evaluate. Gotta really suck to have an unexpected fan base like that though.

circa1916, Monday, 9 December 2019 04:09 (four years ago) link

lol saw them in london c. money store and the crowd wasn't particularly gross at all? money store is the best imo.
