also re point 3, Robert is being fairly practical--of course if there's an invasion he can't have his lords fighting their own wars with one another--his lack of a unified military seems to be a big problem for him, so much that he seems to take it a personal defect.

to the daenarys/dothraki threat question:
If she bears an heir to the dothraki, that heir means a claim to ALL OF THE SHIT EVERYWHERE
If she is killed with her child, in the usual poisonous fashion, prior to the child's coming of age, then that represents WHOOPS OH WELL, try again with a real horse lady, stick to what you know.
Frankly the fact that she is alive and well overseas means little - the fact that she is bedding down with a high ranking army commander means that she may command terrifying leverage. It's all about risk, like a sixteen year picking up carpool rides versus a sixteen year old piloting a brand new Superleggera.

Oh I don't disagree with his pragmatism. I'm just pointing out that his status and approach is due to the fact that he finds himself in charge of a libertarian wet dream, the "accidental democracy" where he's been put in charge only so far as he's not pissing off anybody else too much, and unification is beyond his imagination.
If he were clever instead of just being depressed all the time, he would encourage the Dothraki threat (maybe even fund it) because a clear and present foe would provide him the opportunity he needs to unify the kingdoms and prove his worth as an emperor.
I realize this is all already said and done in made-up books by a fat dork. Still.

I keep forgetting how O_O these books are: the breastfeeding weirdo prince, the horse beheading...

If he didn't turn that shit up to eleven his books wouldn't be an HBO money pit starring people who have starred in other real stuff
― El Tomboto, Monday, 16 May 2011 05:40 (twelve years ago) link
well yeah, but I guess getting caught up in the reading of it you forget how freaky-deaky it all is..I honestly dont think of the books like that, but they are
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 16 May 2011 05:42 (twelve years ago) link
and it's pretty much "abandon all hope etc etc" for any horselovers from now on...kinda downhill from here

I forgot about the breastfeeding and have been dreading Lysa Arran's appearance since the very first episode where Catelyn reads her letter, but seriously how psychologically scarred is that child actor going to be?

Also, those cliffside cells in the Eyrie are WAY too climb-able on the outside. There should be perfectly smooth stone joinery and about 50' more of sheer wall above instead of some nice brick arches and a convenient rooftop.

i spent the whole episode wondering if that kid was sucking on her real boob or if they made some kind of fake boob
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 16 May 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link
i did think the show did a great job of showing how unstable lysa arryn is and how creepy the eyrie/vale are
It has to be fake because otherwise hello, is this Child Protective Services?
Also because it's way too...full to be natural.

they made a fake boob

I don't know how I feel about the Door of the Moon or whatever it's called. I liked it being in the wall, more of a head-fuck when it turns out to be a door to no-where.

kinda bummed they took out the climb up to the Eyrie...I mean, pacing wise I understand, but it added to the weird flavor of that place

Definitely the best episode so far, quite possibly because it had the most added scenes. Felt a lot less stiff.

i think part of the reason this ep worked so well was that it pretty much stuck to action in king's landing and the eyrie; brief visit to winterfell, no dothraki stuff, no wall stuff. not that i don't really like the stuff on the wall, but to keep shifting the scene does take some momentum out of each episode.
― one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:56 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah i agree. It is a problem in a show with so many characters in disparate locations.

It's interesting that you say that and this is followed up by Treme. Just thinking about how Simon has to force himself to write really tight "anecdote" scenes to pack in all the people and situations he wants to do; Thrones, being all notional period stuff and supposedly needing that much more exposition, has to abbreviate a lot and yet still ends up spending probably far too much time in each set
