Arya is too pretty. In the book they keep calling her horse-faced.

this really is pretty brutal

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

aww that's years away. guess i'll have to read the books.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i had to put the book down. i am "processing it."

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i'm on board with this now, to the point where i just frustrate my way through the series-prolonging bits of useless exposition by looking forward to the next cool bit of business with tyrion or arya or w/e. that stephen king-style soap opera plotting, where you get a bunch of disparate threads going, and don't really have to advance any of them much, cuz suspense takes over whenever you're away from the most appealing characters. hope this continues long enough to see the current cast and plot threads completely upended.

just finished the third book after marathon reading sesh, goddamn some crazy shit happens

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

^_^ yes, yes it does

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

The prospect of watching the crazy shit happen on the TV show after having read it alraedy and BEING STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SERIES AS IT IS...it's like I'm hanging on two cliffs at once, and frankly it's exhausting.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

i mean like holy shit. i sort of wonder if the showrunners at hbo are plotting everything out or just taking it one season at a time

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

That said, I re-purchased the trade version of Book 2 yest so I can re-read. lol @ self

1/4 of the way through the fourth book and i am beginning to see why ppl are so frustrated with martin. the iron islands?? who gives a shit about this??? are the dornishmen italian or like turkish or what?? how are they even on the same continent???????

also he loves courtly intrigue but he doesnt really seem to care about actual politics? there are at least 3 major institutions (the citadel, the septons, and the nights watch) in the 7 kingdoms that would irl be big non-aristocratic power bases but instead they are totally apolitical??? chyeah right

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

still this guy can plot an epic fantasy like a m-f'er

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

at this pace he should be done in 10 years, right? its like 5 years between each book?

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

Well, he BETTER be done in, let's see (my guess at the HBO schedule):
1 year for GoT.
1 year for CoK
2 years for SoS
1 year for FFC
2 years for DoD

So he has 5 years (need a year lead-time for production) to get the 2nd to last book done, and then 1 or two years for the last book.

So 5-7 years, I guess.

schwantz, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

theyre gonna need to hurry up some of those seasons if they want to make sure the kids dont age

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

you guys really think HBO will keep this thing going for 7 seasons??

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

I expect some condensation of the story; also I expect that after this season they will just shoot continually to avoid aging issues with the kids

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

The viewership has been climbing every week, so the outlook is pretty good:

although onset of puberty could be a neat explanation for some things later on

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

hope those kids end up being good ass actors, at any rate

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

its funny reading this knowing that its a tv show too -- it kind of makes sense actually, esp. given that martin's background is in tv writing. the last few chapters of every book have a very "hbo season finale" feeling

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:35 (twelve years ago) link

so i think i just figured something out

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

but i won't post it because if i'm right it'll be spoil-y

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

also is it sad that i'm actually like "aw sweet i have years of entertaining television to look forward to"

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

Not sad! You could post your theory in one of the book threads, but then you would get a spoilered...

schwantz, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

also thinking about this -- during the targaeryns reign there was no other political force besides the targaeryns, because they had dragons, and no one else did. and so the context of the books is sort of "the fall of the house targaeryn," and the scramble for power vacuum to be filled, and martin is obviously on-point w/ the way aristocrats jockey for power. and hes _almost_ there toward books 3 and 4 in terms of showing the political power of the nights watch, not to mention the political power of religion w/r/t the (possible spoiler?) lord of light. but i still feel like hes not really grasping the way these institutions would actually wield power. like lol you think the maesters are really going to spend their lives "serving" for thousands of years? you mean, the only guys on westeros who know how to heal people and read? hmm sure

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

i think the maesters are a bunch of ineffectual academics/advisors who have advanced as far as capable under a fairly strict caste system.

w/o spoiling anything, the septons & citadel are totally political
