two weeks pass...

new album is the best one since Deep, by far.

akm, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

Been hearing good things. (But speaking as someone who loves Dust, that's a pretty high bar you're setting!)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

Dust was truly excellent

I lost interest after "Holy Smoke". Someone propose a compilation covering his last 20 years...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

Dust is good but this is much more in the Love Hysteria/Deep vein, but, without all the reverb and overproduction.

akm, Thursday, 9 June 2011 01:25 (twelve years ago) link

is it anything like Unshattered? I didn't really like Unshattered. I think the reverb and overproduction is what I like about Love Hysteria and Deep.

Hmm, listening now, I don't know. Album didn't take off for me until "I Spit Roses" four songs in; the first three on first blush are just kinda there RAWK songs that happen to have Peter Murphy singing. But "Never Fall Out" follows on nicely from "I Spit Roses" so let's see how the rest goes.

That Wild Birds one from last decade isn't bad. Ned will correct me if necessary. I liked the inclusion of stuff like "Deep Ocean Vast Sea."

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:23 (twelve years ago) link

I'd probably switch out "The Sweetest Drop" for another Should song but that's pretty reasonable as a start, yeah.

Okay this new one definitely is clicking now. Real clunky start, though, almost seems like they frontloaded it with the eh stuff to make everything else after it stand out more.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:28 (twelve years ago) link

i guess you can get away with when your fans are for real.

He's doing an instore here at am0eba sf on the 23rd (and apparently in LA on the 16th). There's enough good tracks on Ninth to get me pretty jazzed about it.

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:24 (twelve years ago) link

Wild Birds is fantastic, and I'll side with Ned/aero on the supermassivelove for Dust, amazing album

Finding out he had meth in his car makes me think he's been living a life of impossible debauchery in Turkey. I can only imagine how dark this man's life has been.

kaleb h. (Everything You Like Sucks), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 01:38 (eleven years ago) link

It's so strange. I've known someone who works for him for over a decade now -- admittedly I haven't checked recently to see if that's still the case -- and I've interviewed and met him a couple of times along the way, most recently in passing back in December at his Bauhaus-themed show before New Year's. The public face is always just that but had to say he always seemed like one of the most level-headed guys in music I'd met in the music business.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 01:41 (eleven years ago) link

xpost yeah for me it was more seeing that he was living in Turkey, like oh well of course he had meth, lol

The Suburu was the thing that really jumped out at me. Like, wtf?! but then what did I expect Peter Murphy would drive?

We went over this on FB (with some help):
* Ian Brown will call Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a "coont" at a press conference
* Suzanne Vega, AK-47, duh!
* Julian Assange sold out by Terence Trent D'Arby
* Bez will be caught for all of the above, then found innocent

The weird thing about this is that the hit & run occurred just a couple blocks away from me, and it's part of my territory (so-to-speak) when I'm taking an afternoon walk around the neighborhood.

You know how much mileage I could get out of a "let me tell you about the time Peter Murphy tried to run me down with his Subaru" story?

I've got tickets for Glasgow.

Now I don't condone DUI, hitting and running, meth possession or any of that obviously, but I'VE PAID FOR TICKETS.
