I found it very hard to watch since I was wincing so hard I could barely see. That was some made-up "here be explication" shit.

It isn't HBO unless someone is giving backstory while getting a bj.

Carcetti's diction is very weird... Can't decide if I like it or not.

Ser Smirky McSmirksalot/Alliser Thorne -- is he the Lieut. Commander that Jon is going to steward for?

― Doctoral Who (Leee), Monday, May 30, 2011 2:57 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

nah, hes a knight but he just trains recruits. Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the entire night's watch, is who jon's gonna be fluffing pillows for

littlefinger scene was Very HBO, but i liked the way he said 'play with her arse'

i thought tywin lannister's introduction was gangster as hell. skinning a stag - kinda groanworthy as a premise but in execution it was awesome. nice way to get across how methodical and unflinching he is, and from a staging perspective it was a lot more interesting to watch than just a static conversation.

i like the sort of classical feel of khal drogo waging war purely because they tried to assassinate the khalisi...thus ensuring they bring about their own worst fears.

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Monday, 30 May 2011 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

holy shit this show. i really think i hate ned stark.

Mordy, Monday, 30 May 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

enjoying this ALOT more now than i thought i would after the first episode, would probably enjoy it more if more static expo scenes were filmed w/ field dressing in the foreground rather than some whores. are the books quick/fun reads? ie something i could plausibly pull off this summer? very very very wary of fantasy in general (very happy to leave lotr to watching the movies and that's that). also should i be rooting for the klingons this much? basically am read to see all the white people die and snow zombies isn't really the way i want to see it done, much rather barbarian hordes.

balls, Monday, 30 May 2011 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, now that the jackass has had his head melted I'd be totally up for Drogo/Daenrys winning.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 30 May 2011 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

The littlefinger scene was prob the first time I was annoyed by the gratuitous sex/nudity HBOness of it. I really hated that part and Laurel also otm about it earlier.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Monday, 30 May 2011 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

balls: after some extreme wariness about fantasy writing I have been enjoying the first book quite a bit. Definitely has helped me understand what's going on, but also a good breezy read.

Unlike other people here I am not going to read ahead of the show, though.

polyphonic, Monday, 30 May 2011 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

I might read ahead of the show if the cliffhanger is excruciating enough. Might just jump straight in on vol 2 though, sure I'll pick up any extra plot bits and pieces.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 30 May 2011 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

it reminded me of the first three seasons of the wire when they'd throw in a quick sweaty sex scene every now and then out of nowhere. only if instead they'd also had mcnulty thoroughly describe a flowchart of the barksdale organization while banging that waitress. every other week.

balls, Monday, 30 May 2011 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

The show is good. The books are better. And i don't see why anyone who's enjoyed the show so far wouldn't enjoy the books even more.

Number None, Monday, 30 May 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

Because you'd have to periodically look at the internet while reading them to get your lesbian fix.

People who have read the books: where do you side concerning the balance between experiencing the plot cliffhangers for the first time by watching the show versus having already read the books and knowing what the darn is going on.

Laurel otm abt Carcetti's pr0n scene...stared at the ceiling til it ws over. Ffs surely there is a better way to deliver exposition. (yes yes boobs n arses is better I know)...he is so fucking crepey I cant stand it. Great, but creepy.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 04:44 (twelve years ago) link

it's not that he's gross, it's that there's something gross abt staging an exposition scene (with a long-ass intro before the exposition even starts) around leering shots of prostitutes learning to finger one another. i mean, i hate to use a word like "gratuitous" in this day and age, but come on. at least the skinning in that pther long info-dump served a purpose, developed character in a useful way. we already know that baelish is a sleazebag whoremhonger, we hardly need spend five minutes watching him mong whores to get this point across.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 08:32 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if they established that whore from the north over the last couple of episodes just to have her in this scene.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 09:44 (twelve years ago) link

roz q. exposition, the whore from the north

☂ (max), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 12:16 (twelve years ago) link

sort of hoping she'll show up nude in every lengthy exposition scene

☂ (max), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

i thought this scene was hilarious!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

maybe they can have her field dress a deer while nude

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link

also that scene is really going to screw with the TBS edit

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe there is some kind of nude quota imposed & they had to make up the quota in a hurry

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:39 (twelve years ago) link

the thing I took away from that scene is that Littlefinger is going to use Expositho as his pegging specialist

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if they established that whore from the north over the last couple of episodes just to have her in this scene.

wondered the same thing, tbh

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

five minutes watching him mong whores to get this point across.

Not so much monging as polishing his wares. Even from the pov of pure, gratuitous titillation, the scene was too long and too flat. But like the Tywin scene (mentioned above) it served to underline that we're not supposed to like him. Don't know the books but the show is rather cartoonish though not in an entirely bad way.

For one throb of the (Michael White), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

he's not particularly trustworthy in the books either from what I remember

my wife spent a good 5 minutes after the episode ranting along the theme of "why would you trust anyone who was in love with your wife? stupid ass"

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

ned is really, really dumb

☂ (max), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

one of the things I loved about Martin's story was how he took the archetypal "honorable knight" of fantasy stories and showed how that character just would not work at all if up against anyone who acted even halfway rationally

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

(this comment is in the context of what's already been shown in the show btw)
