it's so great that this is being introduced and makes me very hopeful about reform/decriminalization/legalization movements, but such a bummer to even hear Barney Frank admit it has no chance of passing primarily bc legislators are way behind popular opinion. it's one thing when the people want something regressive or reactionary. another when there's broad popular appeal for particular policies and a disconnect between that popular opinion and legislation.

NYers, read: http://www.freedomisgreen.com/advocates-battle-clock-for-new-york-marijuana-bill-2/

This bill ("Relates to standardizing penalties associated with marijuana possession"):

http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/A7620-2011

This bill will accomplish what legislators originally intended when they decriminalized marijuana in 1977: keeping people out of the criminal justice system for posessing small amounts of marijuana. It will also ingnite our support to bring the fight to the NY Senate and pass the bill there next session.

Please call Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s office at 518-455-3791 and ask him to schedule bill A. 7620 for a floor vote before the session ends. Getting it passed this session will make it more likely it will gain movement in the Senate next session. New York residents: Please contact your Assembly member and ask them to support this bill and for them to pressure leadership (Speaker Silver) to put it up for a vote.

huh, id be interested to see what the top drug is in the #2 or #3 countries

also im assuming that "booze" "nicotine" (or even "caffeine") arent counted as "drugs" for this? prescriptions?

☂ (max), Saturday, 25 June 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

it s kinda dry here. foul drug laws.

imo 1933 was more a test of legalization if anything; a hurdle for technology and rhe lack of public wreckless politics and money. though i don't really know anything about it,. Pot can be a real sensory overload and induce behavioral problems to the uninitiated imo. if people would act normal it probably never would have had the great depression ll

cigarettes suck. though i smoke them constantly. they've got this stuff called mullien, an anti seizuric in trad. medicine, which i've been smoking-- p decent in my opinion. weird high.

that sprayed k2 stuff is pretty weird. gave a pal of mine a weird heartbeat, though i suppose that's to be expected from oddball thc analogues or whatever

FARC jokes not funny :-/

Fa la la (La Lechera), Saturday, 25 June 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

What is the perception of FARC. I thought they were thought politically normal by media barely more fringe than al Jazeera. Isn't there platform "Che"? Though I am totally unknowledgeable on this subject, that was a totally nonfunny remark.

not surprising. this is the takeaway tho:

The paper spoke to advocates who criticized the ruling but are pleased that the government has finally responded, which allows them to appeal to the federal courts.

We also have codeine--which is OTC in a number of countries--as a Schedule II drug, the same classification as fentanyl and morphine. *shakes head*

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 10 July 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

That National Review editorial linked by Mordy is mainly about honoring a legacy of Wm. Buckley, Jr. If Buckley had never come out in favor of legalization, you can damn well bet the current editors never would have arrived there on their own. Still, it is nice to see one of their editorial positions making a modicum of sense.
