Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Monday, 6 June 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

shitty cliffhanger imo. rest of the episode was good tho.

Mordy, Monday, 6 June 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

enh I think the ended it "quietly" just to set the stage for the madness to come

the bravosi's fight was spot on; the show catches the tenor of the book v.well I think

ah cool okay, two more eps, i had it in my mind that it was 8 eps this season.

having not read the book yet, this is the first episode where I felt like they were making huge plot jumps. where did these bravosi people come from? what was up with the guy losing his fingers and being cool with it? stuff felt super condensed.

when will they kill that breastfeeding brat?

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

like the way rob is stepping up to the plate.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Monday, 6 June 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

i assumed the dude who lost his fingers is just supposed to be a bit of a lovable mental case. there's one in all these sort of shows/films. no doubt later on he'll behead someone and chuckle to himself. he's the gimli!

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Monday, 6 June 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

really hope he survived.

Unless they're being deliberately contrary, in pretty much all TV/film ever, if you leave a fight behind before seeing if the good guy dies, it means they didn't.

Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Monday, 6 June 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

that's what i was figuring.

that was by far the best episode so far. they really put their foot on the gas.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:23 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think its just getting better and better. loved the snappy pace.

Is THAT Stannis?

Doctoral Who (Leee), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 03:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, another point where it seemed like things were overly condensed. i'm like, "little brother? what?"

akm, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 03:53 (twelve years ago) link

have they even referred to Rickon by name on the show yet? he had the camera pan on him for like a second in the first episode and this is the first time he's appeared since then. kind of a fumble on their part, even if he doesnt do anything

ciderpress, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 03:55 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, having read the books it's kind of easy to take this stuff for granted. Rickon has probably baen mentioned once or twice, maybe even shown in passing in the first episode, but that raise eyebrows for sure. The thing with Lord Umber losing his fingers and then laughing about it--he is kind of a blustery tuff guy, also drunk, but he does respect displays of power to some degree, and while the wolf attack may not have been that intentionally it has a similar effect. xp

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

the finger thing is similarly glossed over in the book, but as much as anything its sort of supposed to show what northmen are like, i.e., hard as fucc

☂ (max), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 04:07 (twelve years ago) link

Bummed that Ser Barristan didnt strip all the way down to his long johns when they dismissed him
from the kings guard like in the book

Also no way is that Rickon. He looks as old as Brann!

Tyrion's merry men SO otm. Shagga is aces.

Otherwise like the way they are moving the story along. Exciiiiting!

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 04:50 (twelve years ago) link

i like any line in this show zinging theon (sigh) about being a prisoner.

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 04:55 (twelve years ago) link

This is so fucking gripping right now.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 07:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah am really mad to see more of it. a week is too long.

anyone else (who hasn't read the books) think those hill vikings getting involved in the battle will be what sparks ned's crazy sister in law to get involved too, since she doesn't want them ending up armed by the lannisters?

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

those lannister nuclear warheads could really ruin the vale

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

"a lannister always nukes"

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 08:21 (twelve years ago) link

i was thinking that the viking/barbarians would wind up leading a small chunk of the Lannister army to the Vale only to get killed in what i'm to understand is a very easily defensible chunk of land (probably assuming that the soldiers from the vale would be heading south aswell).

THIS POST IS ALL CONJECTURE

My wife hasn't read the books; her current theory re: the story runs as follows:

- The unsympathetic characters can't win, otherwise the books wouldn't be as popular.
- The only sympathetic characters at the moment are the Starks and Daenerys, ergo one of them must win.
- In order for the Starks to win, either Ned has to escape or he has to die so one of his children can avenge him.
- Cersi can't be killed, at least not right away, or else Joffrey would be exposed and there would be no "game of thrones".

Her current theory is that Ned and all of the legitimate Stark children are going to die and Jon Snow is going to sweep through the Lannisters in revenge, ending up as the winner of the "game of thrones" who will have to deal with a returning Daenerys and her child.

huh

thomp, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

Her words, not mine! I was thinking of bringing up Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever as a counterexample except for that I can't think of anyone I know who read those books who actually liked them (lol)

i thought those were awesome when i was thirteen

so did my R.E. teacher, for some reason

pretty strong intuiting by JMP imo

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

i thought those were awesome when i was thirteen

I tried to read them around age 16, at the height of my miserable teen period, and my main reaction was "if I think the main character is this much of a whiny dick, how must he come across to people who are actually happy????"

pretty strong intuiting by JMP imo

I think SHE should write a book tbh

Mr Veg tried to get me to read Thomas Covenant, I read the first book & declared "this guy's an asshole & you cant make me read any more of these." Too rapey and just, no.

Gotta have a Jon/Arya bamf team-up!

More seriously, I'm wondering about the possibility of a Winterfell/Klingon alliance...

also I think the Lannisters are cylons

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 June 2011 04:47 (twelve years ago) link

also Tyrion is a munckin from Oz secretly trying to get back home, and Littlefinger is really a politician from Baltimore

so, episode 8 fekkin rips! my favorite yet by far. have settled into loving the characters i love (arya and her "dance instructor", tyrion, jon snow and sam, catelyn, lord varys, bran), tolerating the rest. am warming to daenerys due to increased kick-assed-ness, though she's still dull as dirt.

best moment: the long, slow upward pan after sam's "i hope the wall's high enough..."

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Thursday, 9 June 2011 05:00 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that part was killer.

Amazing looking woman also. And Drogo is just supremely badass.

I am still trying to figure out why a post containing the conjecture of someone who hasn't read any of the books warranted a reposting of the spoiler rules

God her hair is like quilt batting and she's all fake-tan now -- hate this casting, hate her, hate.
