"5GB of free storage for mail, docs, backups. Purchased music, apps, and books don't count towards that."

IMO syncing is going to be better than streaming. 3G is too ropey for streaming. Ever tried using the Soundcload app?

Ah, looks like they're using the "match" technology they acquired via Lala.com to address the "stuff not bought on iTunes" issue.

iTunes match - $24.99 a year

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

match service, upgrades all your stolen music to 256k drm free ACC....nice

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

that is cheap. like, $75 cheaper than I expected. does it only give you 5gb though?

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

"Apple charging one flat price, even for "20,000 songs.""

If he seriously thinks that's the upper limit...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

the question is will the new iphone support Friendster

Latham Green, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

This seems nice:

10:20 am Next feature: Resume, instantly resume where you were in an application after you quit it.
10:21 am Even works system wide, when you reboot all of your windows and apps return how they were.

On first glance this seems like the most annoying thing ever

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 6 June 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it was some sort of resume updated for those who frequently change jobs - like it automatically updates your resume when you get fired

Latham Green, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

hey so will i still be able to use this $25 thing with stuff that isnt available on itunes music store?

☂ (max), Monday, 6 June 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

apple basically just owns the entire recording industry now, huh

☂ (max), Monday, 6 June 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

No. Stuff that is on the store that you haven't bought via iTunes, yes. Stuff that is not in iTunes, no.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

11:54 am Library is scanned and matched.
11:55 am Any songs that remain, you can upload.

Is iCloud already up & running? The App Store icon on my iPhone is now showing all the Apps I've bought that aren't on my phone.

groovypanda, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

Don't know if it came across but Steve sounded really really ill.

Don't get the difference between iTunes match and just wifi syncing. I guess you don't have to be at home for Match.

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

I bet Steve creates iBody for himself soon

Latham Green, Monday, 6 June 2011 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

:-(

lion @ £30

guess I should just upgrade to an MBP now then

this you irl http://i.imgur.com/v3kw8.gif (cozen), Monday, 6 June 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

wifi synching moves the files physically. match doesnt.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

How do you mean? with Match you don't need to upload the file, but all the other devices still have to download. Only difference is whether it's a Mac at home sending them the file or the Cloud,

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

its amusing taht if you work someplace where people are using itunes you can all steal each others music all day - i wonder if the icloud will work in a similar way

Latham Green, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

is lion upgrade only from snow leopard or will it upgrade 10.5?

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 6 June 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

Snow Leopard only.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

Apple's got the formal hoohah up on their site:

http://www.apple.com/icloud/

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/

http://www.apple.com/macosx/

MacRumors and eight million other sites providing other summaries as well.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

thanks ned.

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 6 June 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

ok, one more dumb question: will 10.6 install discs from a newer mbp work as upgrade for my 10.5 mbp...?

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 6 June 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Match you don't need to upload the file, but all the other devices still have to download

no, I think match provides a stream from a centralized place, unless I totally missed something.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

holy shit, there is no way i'm getting through all this today

http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/

indicates that cloud music is available "now" in 10.3, but 10.3 isn't available yet for download, for me anyway.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

here's a quote that's been a long time coming:

With iOS 5, you no longer need a computer to own an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

(clearly not)

It's not like we could go to Islam (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 6 June 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, Match definitely isn't streaming. What cloud music means is that US users can treat songs like apps -- you can redownload them on any device. (You used to not be able to do this). Match extends that to music you ripped (max 25k songs).

Otherwise you still have to sync all your devices. But you can do this using wifi now so it's not nearly as bad as before.

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

ICloud Music, I mean

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

I'm pretty positive you are wrong.

"Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to your iCloud library for you to listen to anytime, on any device. "

there is no physical 'download' and keep with match. you just play it off the cloud. it's not taking up physical space on your device's hard drive.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

oh wait, you are right, and I am wrong:

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/06/apple%E2%80%99s-music-icloud-is-nice-not-revolutionary/

"Unlike Amazon, Google, and most other music lockers, Apple iCloud actually downloads the files to your devices, rather than streaming them."

that is dumb.

but it's still kind of cool.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

And I suppose like PlayStation Plus if you stop paying your subscription you lose all that music.

btw I'm guessing all those songs with US spelling that I corrected won't be matched.

"Unlike Amazon, Google, and most other music lockers, Apple iCloud actually downloads the files to your devices, rather than streaming them."

that is dumb.

It's dumb if it matches 12,500 songs and your iphone is 16gb long.
