is lion upgrade only from snow leopard or will it upgrade 10.5?

if it's anything like snow leopard it will be sold as an upgrade, but will be capable of doing a fresh install.

You download a lot of apps. And now you can see them in one convenient place: your purchase history on the App Store.

FUCKING FINALLY

how does it match them? by title?

lala.com matched based on song length and metadata only which made it very easy to fool

itunes match will be great for those 6.5b tech-illiterate ipod touch owners who don't have album covers for anything.

well it isn't ideal but I will use it. I have a 500gb library of music at home, and then I have like, 100gb of music on my laptop which I take to work every day. I'd love to clear out most of that on my laptop and just be able to grab what I want from my home library while I'm at work. so fine by me, if not perfect.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

it's still gonna be a hassle. we'll have to download stuff we want to listen to at work, and then eventually we'll have to delete stuff when we accumulate too much.

w/r/t 10.5 the app store requires snow leopard and lion will have a recovery partition apparently; i assume apple want you to buy 10.6 to get 10.7 :(

The unimpeachably good stuff (regardless of whether it should have been there three years ago or not):

- ad-free browsing in ios safari
- free mobileme out of the box
- cloud sync from within apps (this should make my flashcard management 239847238947389749 times less painful)
- view and re-download apps you've purchased
- no need to use itunes ever again (for some people)
- cloud backup
- app state persistence across devices
- notifications that don't stop you halfway through doing something
- newsstand thingo
- some other thing i can't remember but it was cool
- CAMERA ACCESS FROM LOCK SCREEN
- using one of the volume buttons to take photos instead of that fucking awful and unacceptably fiddly on-screen button
- photo enhancements from within the std photos app
- automatic app updates every time you charge your phone (within wifi range)
- those incredibly awesome 4/5-finger swipe gestures in the ipad's dev mode will now be standard
- improvements to accessibility (people without impairments forget about this)
- the ipad has a split keyboard for thumb typing, i mean

Settings -> Store -> the auto download options just appear

I feel like this is the default mode for whenever we talk about any new feature in an apple product

dayo, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

One of the quiet but useful features of Lion per Gizmodo:

• Recovery Partition: Speaking of recovery, you might be wondering how you reinstall an OS that's download only. Well! Apple is clever, and Lion will include its own recovery partition—in other words, it can reinstall itself if your OS goes to hell.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

fuck that, this 64gb disk is small enough already.

"a link on the Apple iCloud page reads "Try it today — download iTunes 10.3, free for Mac and PC", which takes me to a page where i can download iTunes 10.2.2"

I have already snarkily filed a complaint with my friend who works on the Apple Store.

iOS5 also has location based notifications which will be neat:

Give Book to John> When I arrive > John's address
Call Office > When I Leave > Client's address

REMINDERS

A better way to do to-dos.
Next time you think to yourself, “Don’t forget to...,” just pull out your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and jot it down. Reminders lets you organize your life in to-do lists — complete with due dates and locations. Say you need to remember to pick up milk during your next grocery trip. Since Reminders can be location based, you’ll get an alert as soon as you pull into the supermarket parking lot. Reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars.

MORE stuff

Highlights:

- (Mac app) updates will also now be delta updates — meaning you’ll only have to download what’s new, not the entire app
- Software updates will now come over the air, and they too will be delta updates (much smaller)
- iOS 5 Safari for iPad has tabbed browsing
- The iPhone iPod app has been broken into Music and Videos apps (just like the iPod touch)
- The iPad Music app has been entirely redone
- iMessages was built on the Push Notification infrastructure
- The LED flash on the iPhone 4 can be set to visually show you when you have a message or call
- Developers are also being granted access to the LED flash on the iPhone 4
- Developers are also now able to change the backlight setting (like iBooks — apps like Instapaper previously made their own solutions)
- iCloud will have storage APIs that developers can use
- If iTunes Match can’t find your music on the iTunes server, they will upload it for you

The fact it backs up game date will this mean if I say, delete Infinity Blade and some other large Apps from my phone, when I redownload them from iCloud all my save data will download too?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 09:35 (twelve years ago) link

presumably yeah

I mean it's designed to allow you to start something on one device and finish it on another so it's the logical conclusion (perhaps not)

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 11:31 (twelve years ago) link

sadly i have heard no mention of other location or time-based settings, i.e.

Set to Silent --> at midnight
Do offline download of Guardian app --> at 8am

or battery-saving measures, like

Set to airplane mode --> After failing to find signal for 5 minutes

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 11:33 (twelve years ago) link

stop hassling me --> every time you lose signal for 0.5 sec
stop dropping to 2100 mhz without my permission --> fucking ever

location based reminders sound a bit less useful than i thought, on the other hand:

jfalconer In theory, Reminders that trigger on location is one of the cool things in iOS5. But it's clunky -- addresses have to be in Contacts.

I'm considering it. I'll have to see when it launches but its not big money so I probably will.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:36 (twelve years ago) link

you can do some of this location based trigger stuff on your laptop already if you're a weenie like me, e.g. i have:

- screen locks when my phone is not in bluetooth range (i.e. i am away from desk)
- time machine target disk changes based on what disk is connected

caek, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:36 (twelve years ago) link

I guess most of the stuff I use spotIfy for is stuff I also have in my collection back home and £25 a year is way better than £10 a month so yeah, I expect I'll switch.

JimD, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:43 (twelve years ago) link
