my comment was based entirely on what was presented on the show

I mean seriously, what has this board come to if I can't use several cryptic posts to set up a "magic punani" joke

Going back to the show ... did anyone else hate the scene with Jon Snow and the undead wight? Didn't work for me.

well it didn't bother me...

I thought it was OK. What didn't you like about it?

rockapads, Thursday, 9 June 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

Laurel - I'm re-reading them now and the Dany & Drogo thing your thinking of is when she decides to ride him instead of being mounted. She takes him out to some soft moss in the middle of camp and they go at it.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 June 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't like how the wight looked and moved at all. It felt like a z-budget horror scene. Like something out of a Mark Borchardt production.

had no problem with the zombie scene

the wight being such a fat football hooligan made it less scary

Hm, thanks. I thought that scene was the analog to/sign of her adaptation to her status in contrast to an earlier scene in which he was um the agressor and it was against her will. Must have confused it w another book in the intervening years, tho.

daeny was clearly raped on the evening of her wedding, right? is that what you're talking about? didn't seem to happen in front of anybody though, at least not on the show.

That might have been part of the problem. He certainly didn't look like a ranger. Was he supposed to be?

polyphonic, Thursday, 9 June 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

Mordy, maybe I made that up/transplanted it from another book??? I'm not finding references to it online now and I haven't read Bk 1 in a long time, but I thought that at some point Drogo had to um well that it had to be in public under the stars, in the manner of the horses that are the Dothraki lifesblood. It DID happen, didn't it??

in the books, during the scene where danaerys introduces drogo to non-doggystyle sex, she drags him out into the middle of the camp. its a power display on the part of danaerys, and not rape (unless were talking a complicated definition of rape)

the wedding night sex, in the books, isnt rape either--he like... strokes her? all over? and then (barf) "slips a finger inside her" or something, and she is hrm "very wet" or something

☂ (max), Thursday, 9 June 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

i think its "to HBO's credit" that they have drogo rape her rather than pretend that he was able to seduce her somehow and that it makes it okay

☂ (max), Thursday, 9 June 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

It is what you think, laurel. It is the first time she asserts herself and takes command of her situation. Unlike other Dothraki wives, she is not a mare; she has power and will change things.

No no there must have been this other book that we published that I picked up which also had a horse tribe of warlike people and their king took a wife from another society and their marriage had to be consummated out in the open in "horse" fashion in front of his entire assembled army or w/e and I must have conflated the two. I heartily apologize for this whole digression!!!!!

yes, barf. in the TV show, though the scene cut early on, it seemed non-consensual. she was weeping, forced down (iirc?), etc.

not barf at sex or even at the idea that she might have been attracted to drogo, but barf at lousy descriptions of sex in pulp novels

better to get stuck playing one kind of character than risk not playing any

here's a pretty good (spoiler-free) article that argues that changes to catelyn and dany's character arcs have made them less interesting:

http://www.overthinkingit.com/2011/05/10/game-of-thrones-feminism/

She took his hand and moved it down [CENSORED CENSORED NAUGHTY BUSINESS CENSORED]. “Yes,” she whispered as she put [CENSORED CENSORED GEORGE SHE'S THIRTEEN WHAT THE HELL CENSORED CENSORED].

...

The damsel in distress has been a stock character in melodrama for as long as melodrama has been around. So has the long-suffering wife who pines for her husband while he’s off grimly doing what needs to be done in the public sphere. There are elements of these stock characters in Daenerys Targaryen and Catelyn Stark. (Dany even took a couple of levels in the “white woman sexually menaced by a swarthy ethnic type” prestige class.) But in the books, this is not all there is to them, not even the main part of what there is to them, and in the series, at least in the pilot episode, it’s all that they are. Why this flattening? Well, both of these stock characters are women who have been damaged by a patriarchal system. This is an aspect of Cat and Dany’s stories, so that’s fine. But in the book, they are also a part of the same system that is grinding them down. They’ve got a role to play in that system, and each of them accepts, excels at, and even to a degree relishes that role. And this is too much complexity for a TV show to stomach, even an aitch-bee-oh TV show. It’s like the writers are afraid that if Daenerys enjoys the sex, the audience will forget that politically expedient quasi-consensual child marriages are a BAD thing. Or perhaps they’re afraid that the audience will think the writers have forgotten it. Whatever the motivation, the televised version of these characters is sadly diminished.

even an aitch-bee-oh TV show

Does HBO even trademark their network name to some crazy extent? Or is this just something that belongs in the IA thread? I hate when people do this for no other reason than to be "clever" or "funny".

um, not really equal imho. overuse of scare quotes is, but I think that was a pretty valid use of them.

Wasn't dismissing the article as a whole, I just find it hard to take people seriously when they take the time to type something out like that when it really serves little purpose.

It’s like the writers are afraid that if Daenerys enjoys the sex, the audience will forget that politically expedient quasi-consensual child marriages are a BAD thing.

Well, considering the current relationship status between Dany and Drogo, we're still at a point where we might "forget that politically expedient quasi-consensual child marriages are a BAD thing."

Also, I hope that the poster who complained about my speculation was just being a hyper-sensitive spoilerphobe (which I consider myself to be one, incidentally) and not someone who read the book and took my speculation as, you know, a spoiler.

Btw, I started reading the book, and damn aitch-bee-oh changed a whole lot. For instance, in the book, Bran only caught Jaime and Cersei wrestling!
