I heard "Sparks Fly" on country radio yesterday; apparently it's the new single now that "Mean" is winding down ("Mean" hit #2 on the country charts).

TOO HARD

My brain is aware that there's no way that 'Ours' is the best track on this but it's just so compulsively listenable.

This is the "Stay Beautiful" effect. Though really the bonus tracks shouldn't be on here, even though I don't see any of them picking up votes. It's obvious why they didn't make the album; in comparison to shit like "Dear John" and "Haunted," they are so slight and Taylor-by-numbers (which obv still means they are pretty good).

I love Fearless much as anybody but for me it kinda falls off just a little bit after track 6 or 7. Speak Now doesn't hit as high, but it's more varied and interesting, and for someone who gets criticized for her voice she adds all sorts of shade to her vocalization that really augments the songs, or moments in songs that add up (that sort of defeated growl-sigh on "I swear I'd love you rrrrright" on "Back To December" or how she jumps at "I'm even better than you"--indicating a pleasant surprise, whether it's his at her proficiency or it's hers at being touched--and then lowers into something really sultry and flirty on "imagined I would be" in "Sparks Fly").

Maybe "Sparks Fly" then, which isn't the best song but has grown in estimation the more I listen to it. But then there's "Back To December" and "Dear John" and "Mean" and "Enchanted" and "Long Live." TOO HARD.

pleasantly shocked at all the "enchanted" love! i thought I was the only one sticking up for that song last fall

"never grow up" was the one that surprised me the most the first time i heard it, and it still kinda does.

What the fucking fuck are the last three tracks? They aren't on itunes or wiki p.

I think I'm finally coming around on "The Story Of Us". Hearing it all the time on the radio is helping.

i think of myself as really liking this album but i only ever listen to half of it, pretty much always turn off somewhere around better than revenge/innocent/haunted -- maybe if the three unlikeable tracks weren't all clumped together I'd have some kind of idea how the album ends.

those first eight songs are all the best though.

also, i am never going to stop being convinced that the chorus of 'if this was a movie' starts "come back, come back, come back to me, Eli"

When "Speak Now" first came out, I shared a clip of her performing the song on Letterman with my friends on FB and referred to it as Merseybeat!

haha lex I just mean that it swings in a pretty classic way...Merseybeat came in part from classic country...listen to your Dwight Yoakum & you'll know the score.
