the super ashra-y one with the weird name

do you mean the "icasol" 12" by ongou? with the idjut boys edit on it? cause if so, YES. it is easily one of my tracks of the year.

i picked up that umut/slowdown 12" too. as with claremont 56, have soft rocks disappointed at all this year? all of the mixes and edits they've been putting out are quite cosmic and quite good. i even prefer their mix of "love love love" over all others, including the one from aeroplane. maybe it's just the presence of kathy diamond that does it for me...

err, "ongou" by icasol, rather

what a track 8 minutes of pure brilliance... deep chunky cosmic space grooves, euphoric synth solos, moody atmospheric New Order hooky basslines

will holy ghost release a studio album in 2009?

mungolian jet set, aeroplane, holy ghost, the return of Andrew Weatherall.... what are the other balearic artists to look out for in 2009?

djmartian, Thursday, 8 January 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

jeez not everything is balearic, guy

opinions4usic (deej), Thursday, 8 January 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

ha. yeah. i'm pretty sure holy ghost aren't balearic

aww, but does it really hurt anyone if he thinks that?

personally i am really hoping for more from västkustska ryggdunkarsällskapet and tiedye

anyone heard this?

Not at all balearic. It's more homejob synth, lo-fi acid, "beatbox grot and wobbly end-of-the-pier organ", all sequenced as a single 60 min track.

It also includes a "wow-and-fluttering synth-pop cover of “It Never Rains in Southern California”".

(xpost) don't forget that an important component of the original balearic sound was the occasional industrial or dark-wave track thrown in for good measure (throbbing gristle, cabaret voltaire, belgian synth wave bands, etc). shit wasn't just beaches and yacht rock, it also had that exploratory element of weirdness going on.

currently listening to it for the first time the whole way through, but parlour's mix of frak tunes on information sounds great so far. and it definitely fits on the side of the balearic spectrum i mentioned above.

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Friday, 23 January 2009 09:29 (fifteen years ago) link

^w/r/t Parlour. I keep forgetting to play it more often as the cd gets lost in the piles of other cd's because of its slim paper packaging.
(One major quibble I have with Information though is that they (or whoever ships for them) don't know how to package vinyl. The covers came out shit both time I ordered (folded around the vinyl so to speak)...)

Hans Appelqvist is awesome, I bought Sifantin Och Mörkret after hearing a song of his on (if I remember correctly) a Wire Tapper cd. Not balearic though, but quirky songwriter/sample songs with lots of detail. Artwork is by the guy who also does visuals/videos for the Knife.

Hey, is anybody going to see Lindstrom in Chicago tonight? I've never seen him before so I wanna check it.

stingy, Friday, 30 January 2009 21:54 (fifteen years ago) link

smartbar + lindstrom + cold winter nite sounds so dope. jealous.

gr8080, Friday, 30 January 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i saw him last night

max, Friday, 30 January 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago) link

you should go, just dont expect it to be a really dance-y set

max, Friday, 30 January 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i'm planning to go, even though it's 11 degrees currently. was he just playing records or did he have actual synths when you saw him?

stingy, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

lol he was playing his laptop

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

hes not djing--he does a set of his own shit. i recommend smokin a fat doob.

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago) link

o shit. i'm going tomorrow night. gtk

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah tbh we were a little disappointed since we were expecting him to be djing a dance set, but hes really just doing a laptop show. im sure i would have liked it more if i had known thats what it was, but as it was i was a little :(

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but didnt he warn u in the interview

gr8080, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt heed the signs

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know if anyone could be into dancing in these temperatures

stingy, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i would rather see woolfy's live band set tomorrow here in sf than lindstrom with a laptop

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i assume lindstrom was playing where you go and some other stuff? i guess i want to make sure this is going to be worth my while because it is really freakin cold outside and i don't have a car. i'm fine with it being chill/not dancey but if it's just like listening to the album on a better sound system then that's not as appealing. thanks for the info max

stingy, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

psychawsple, they are across the street from each other

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

huzzah! guess i've never been to this dna lounge before...

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:58 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah he played bits of all the tracks on the album + a bunch of his older stuff, very well-mixed, all sounded great

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 00:59 (fifteen years ago) link

alright, i'll suck it up then. thanks

stingy, Saturday, 31 January 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Weird, last time I saw Lindstrom live he played a very dancey set, with nothing from the album at all. Admittedly this was at 2am at Matter.

Matt DC, Saturday, 31 January 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah tbh we were a little disappointed since we were expecting him to be djing a dance set, but hes really just doing a laptop show.

I almost changed my mind at the last minute to go cause I wanted to kick it w/ you dudes but now I'm kinda glad I didn't, that sounds pretty close to how his other show at studio b went down when I saw him a couple years ago

dmr, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

on the other hand BOREDOMS SUPER ROOTS 10 LINDSTROM REMIX!! wow it's good

dmr, Saturday, 31 January 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

saw him six mths ago and it was totally a live set on actual keyboard (with extra bits sequenced in and sounds midi'd from laptop)

he may have had a keyb and i was too drunk/too far away to see it but im pretty sure he was 100% laptop + sequencer

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

sic and matt dc both sound like they had better lindstrom experiences. i would still go see him again. hes a total sweetheart too, really shy but very nice.

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

it looks liked all laptop at smartbar but it was a lot of fun + pretty dancey

was too drunk to keep track of how much of it was his -- he def began the set & ended it w/ shit from the new album but a bunch of stuff happened in the middle that i lost track of

LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Monday, 2 February 2009 07:28 (fifteen years ago) link

its dancey-ness was mostly related to the venue maybe?

yeah, i was a little apprehensive given max's warning but he played a super upbeat set, totally rawked the house.

about his setup though, i don't wanna get all technical but his laptop was most likely the sequencer (using Ableton or something) and he was using two control surfaces to manipulate the music live (including adding new parts i noticed were different and distinct from WYGIGT). really, i don't know what you expect a live set to be in dance music from a single guy. Lots of live manipulation and one of the more memorable nights of dance i've had in the last year.

amaaaaaaazing.

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

also he wore an awesome hat, with a blue flower.

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Lindstrøm hasn't DJed in four years or so (his words) so not sure why people were expecting that.

this was the third time i saw him, probably the best. i liked how the epic-ness of WYGIGT provided this massive framework for everything else to hang from, giving the night a structure it wouldn't have otherwise. and he dropped what i presumed were bits of his forthcoming album with Solale (though it coulda been Christabelle, couldn't tell you) that were stellar.

if there was a downside, it was that he was moving through ideas sooo fast (the polar opposite of the previous times i saw him, where he moved at an almost glacial speed), seriously switching it up every 2 minutes or so, that it was hard to maintain a dance rhythm.

beta blog, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't notice, i was too busy dancing and fending off the MASSIVE douchebag quotient - wtf was up with all the DUDES & DRUNK SUBURBAN CHICKS at this party (i'm guessing the 11th street curse), not to mention the frigging legion of photographers on the fucking dancefloor, getting in the way - at one point i counted FIVE of them with their gigantic rigs basically blocking the view of the decks & projections. also, unless you post warning at the door that i'm going to be photographed just by entering the club, i generally DO NOT CONSENT. lots of those dudes will find pics of me flipping them off when they review their shots...

that said the music was stellar and i had tons of fun despite all this BS. beta is otm about the epic-ness and how the album was the framework. new tunes were wicked (btw solale = christabelle afaik), that super funky one in the middle was pukka ;)it's around the 3 min. mark in part 2 below - btw someone recorded the most of the show using a digicam and posted 11 vids to youtube with decent audio quality: check it!

part 1

part 2

part 3 (includes laptop crash)

part 4 (wicked)

part 5 (also wicked)

part 6

part 7

part 8 (w/ new lindstrom & solale CHOON!)

part 9

part 10

part 11 is just the crowd cheering at the end. :)
enjoy, big ups to youtube user derekbobus for upping these...

also, i had a quick chat with the man afterwards (while we were being kicked out of the office - the only quiet place in the club - by the incredibly rude venue staff) and he said that the reason the tour is so short is partially because his GF won't let him go away for too long as she's home with their two little ones :)

bump so ya'll mf'az see this shit. :)
