Once Were Moderators (DG), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

they do an 8gb build-to-order option but it's basically hermetically sealed to end users i think

caek, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

whoa is it true u cant upgrade the ram on macbook airs??? weak

― max, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 12:12 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark

yah it's soldered directly onto the board iirc

dayo, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

did they even update the airs? what's new?

maurice flitcoz (cozen), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

Thunderbolt, i5/i7 (2x faster), backlit keyboard

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

oooh i5, just noticed that... OK I'm in

should I 11 or 13?!

maurice flitcoz (cozen), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

11 is awesome; 13 might be too big to take everywhere? 11 + monitor killer imo

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

was thinking that, too

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

although i was also thinking that since i'm gonna be getting my new stuff w/an educational loan and discount, i might just pop for the lowest-end Air and the higher-end 21.5" iMac. the difference between that and a high-end 11" and a 27" display is only 250 bucks!

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

i've had a 15" for ages now (and a 12") before that, so while a 27" would be ~amazing~, i'd rather have the horsepower of an iMac instead of the space/wow of a larger screen (though it would be dope for movies)

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

tho i guess an alternative would be horsier 27" imac and an ipad

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder when they'll drop the optical drives from the rest of their machines

markers, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

kinda stupid move on the mac mini, I think; thing is perfect for a "media centre" type Mac, but no dvd player rules that out.

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

do pro users use the cd drive a lot? i'm not a pro user really but i never ever use mine except when importing a cd into itunes which barely never happens anymore

markers, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i haven't used the CD drive for anything other than ripping (which it doesn't do reliably anymore) for years

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

oh and installing Lightroom

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

i've used mine a fair bit b/c my Mac is also my DVD player.

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

Bit pissed there is no BO option for a bigger flash drive on the new air. I'd have to slim down quite a lot to fit my work stuff into 256MB

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

optical drive on my mini died three years ago. it was pretty annoying for about six months and haven't missed it since.

akm, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

I use my Mac Pro for ripping dvds and blu-ray discs, does that count? :)

mh, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha sure!

markers, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

how big's your edu discount gbx? mine's only $50 on the macbook air :(

dayo, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that's the standard across the board

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

but i can still get an air + imac for the price my buddy just spent on a spec'd out 15" mbp which is just...silly

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

mbp forever

mh, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

no way man

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

installing Lion now, never done a day one install before but online delivery makes it so easy + I'm excited about versions.

Euler, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I was mostly kidding. I got a new one last year, and have done so every 2.5 years or so for the last decade

I'm really thinking I might not next time around.

mh, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think my next computer's probably going to be an air

markers, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

I was planning to get 'er indoors one of these but I can't justify the price. Starting to wonder now whether the old macbook will be replaced by something other than the entry-level MBA.

Lion can wait a few days.

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

having played around with the 11" at the apple store, it's sort of perfect for my mobile needs. and so unbelievably tiny, it's insane

i doubt it

http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/07/20/apple-execs-discuss-lion-macbook-air-mac-mini-thunderbolt-display/

With the release of the new MacBook Air came the demise of the white MacBook. Apple said it made sense after seeing the trends of its customers.

“One of the things we saw is that the MacBook Air was simply more popular than the MacBook,” said Moody. “It does more in half the weight and in half the volume.”

markers, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

the macbook also cannibalizes the 13" mbp sales I bet

dayo, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

yeah oh well xp

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'd forgotten they even have a 13" MBP. WTF is the point of that thing? For people who really need a lower-res screen and a DVD drive?

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

any benchmarks on lion yet? I don't want to install anything that is going to slow down one of my machines (2gh mac mini with core 2 processor, with 4gb of ram... not speed demon at all, but working more or less just fine with snow leopard. all we do on it is go on the internet, use iphoto and itunes [giant libraries though])

akm, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

Haven't messed with it too much yet, but it seemed snappier on my mbp

I'll play with it on the older Mac Pro and see how it goes

mh, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:52 (twelve years ago) link

"seemed snappier..."

schwantz, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

had somehow never thought of this. is the original 11 up to running a 30" monitor?

had an 11 since launch and it's definitely my favorite laptop ever, even without backlit keyboard etc.

toby, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

can anybody give me a sense of the gaming possibilities of the new mac mini? I haven't had a decent system in yrs. Would upping to the i7 be worthwhile? I don't know what 1.2x faster means when they're talking about portal 2/cod.

shaane, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it'll run it, but it gets a bit toasty trying.

I reckon the new Thunderbolt display would be brilliant w/11 -- it has Ethernet and other ports so it's much more like a docking station than the old 27" screen. Pity about the gloss. xp

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

y'all are making that sound like a tempting option...

g++ (gbx), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

fyi you can get last year's 27" imac for $1300 from bhphoto, shipped

dayo, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

oh it's 1400 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/723270-REG/Apple_MC511LL_A_27_iMac_Desktop_Computer.html

that one has the displayport input so you can mirror the display of any computer you plug into it (use it as an external display, basically), so you'd have like a free display + computer?

not sure if they make thunderbolt -> display port cables yet tho
