oh it's 1400 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/723270-REG/Apple_MC511LL_A_27_iMac_Desktop_Computer.html

that one has the displayport input so you can mirror the display of any computer you plug into it (use it as an external display, basically), so you'd have like a free display + computer?

not sure if they make thunderbolt -> display port cables yet tho

ice cr?m, Thursday, 21 July 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

It's the same cable.

Install of Lion worked like a dream for me. Figure I'll discover more of the quirks as I go. (Conveniently those items in my dock that showed as being incompatible with it were mostly ones I didn't need anymore anyway so hurrah for a forced cleanup.)

Why should I keep my i5 MBP 15" with anti-glare screen? Far as I can tell the only thing that makes it better then these new airs is the screen, which I plan on pairing with another monitor anyway. Hell, when I bought the MBP I was bummed that the 13" was still Core2Duo and would've gotten the 13" had they upgraded it. I don't need tons of storage, I have a Pro at home. This is for using in the office and on the go.

dan selzer, Thursday, 21 July 2011 04:50 (twelve years ago) link

Debating selling the 13" i7 MBP I got for work for a 13" MBA - I have a 27" iMac that gets used most of the time, the MBA is just for documents on the job+school+travel.

quite like lion :D

Once Were Moderators (DG), Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:01 (twelve years ago) link

I really don't so far. Mission control is half-baked and the other iOS-style features feel awkward. Yes I know there's a Lion thread, I'm lazy.

(this is on a 15" mbp btw)

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

I'm very happy with my MPB 13" as it's my only computer (plugged into external monitor most of the time). MBA wouldn't be powerful enough or have enough ports etc and a 15" was too expensive and quite a lot less portable.

Alba, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

Guy at work also has one and says there was quite a big performance difference at the time between it and the MB and it had FireWire too, which makes more sense.

stet, Thursday, 21 July 2011 12:27 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I definitely need FW.

Are there any 3rd party thunderbolt monitors yet?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 21 July 2011 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

why is dayo's post replicating itself? i am scared

Once Were Moderators (DG), Thursday, 21 July 2011 13:31 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's just now getting to the point where people are making monitors with displayport input, so there are some available. It's odd in that I kind of wanted one for a while and it seemed like there were a handful released when Apple switched to displayport, then companies gave up and kept making DVI-only ones for a few more years.

not sure if they make thunderbolt -> display port cables yet tho

mh, Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

definite gap in market for MBP 13": it sits in the space the white macbook's just vacated, and it's a much more powerful machine. tried the 11" air and it couldn't handle streamed content from vimeo HD seamlessly. bit disappointing, so might plump for the 13" MBP instead

maurice flitcoz (cozen), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

mini display port and Thunderbolt use the same cables. I don't know how daisy chaining works, though -- you might have to have the display on the end. It's like the SCSI days again!

hmmm

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

i have never had a prob with any streamed video on the lovely emma b's air. that said, she has the beefier 11"

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure the great part of thunderbolt chaining is that it doesn't matter where things are

intel had a demo where they had a disk array, a computer, and a display chained with the display in the middle and they were playing a bunch of video off of the disk array with no issues

inverted scrolling in Lion gonna restart the inverted look v game battles of lore?

Euler, Friday, 22 July 2011 01:35 (twelve years ago) link

I think I hate it fwiw

Euler, Friday, 22 July 2011 01:36 (twelve years ago) link

It makes sense on a trackpad imo, the cognitive gap for a scroll wheel is probably larger though.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Friday, 22 July 2011 01:39 (twelve years ago) link

on trackpad, could adapt but not sure it's worth the bother

Euler, Friday, 22 July 2011 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

I'm on the same page as Schlafsack

It's miracle day!

mh, Friday, 22 July 2011 02:03 (twelve years ago) link

ok i'm not a software-head or anything and i probably wouldn't understand half this thread... but... should i bother getting lion? should i wait? i have a macbook pro that's lion-ready fwiw.

dooo it

mh, Friday, 22 July 2011 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

why? give me a reason!

by another name (amateurist), Friday, 22 July 2011 02:14 (twelve years ago) link

In a few months app updates with cool stuff will use api features that require Lion and you'll be like "why do I need to upgrade, grind grind moan"

that and the gesture stuff is pretty fun

mh, Friday, 22 July 2011 02:23 (twelve years ago) link

Kind of skeptical, but it's possible and would be a great acquisition for their hobby appliance. They've got Netflix and MLB for subscription services, so a Hulu option would make sense, but it's kind of annoying that this might kill the service for the many other devices it's on.

mh, Friday, 22 July 2011 03:01 (twelve years ago) link

btw that screenshot upthread that I can't seem to delete is actually dual quad core processors

braggin'

lion is making my 2006 mb ~grind~

sigh. first OS update to make my computer slower in 11 years I think

RIP white mb. easy enough to downgrade if I need to?

estela damm (cozen), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:17 (twelve years ago) link

does MS Office 2008 work with Lion? Because I heard today it doesn't. This was very second-hand though.

akm, Friday, 22 July 2011 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

It'll grind for the first 1-2 hrs because Spotlight has to reindex your whole drive. cmd+space will tell you how long it's got to go.

xp

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:25 (twelve years ago) link

wonder if that is maybe it

all the animations are treacle tho regardless

estela damm (cozen), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:29 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, I should mention that Lion's time estimates were garbage for me. 33 minute installation took 65 minutes and the 18 hr spotlight indexing took 1.5 hrs.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:35 (twelve years ago) link

and yeah, the whole interface is shithouse until the indexing finishes so

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:36 (twelve years ago) link

indexing is long finished

estela damm (cozen), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:38 (twelve years ago) link

bugger

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Friday, 22 July 2011 04:38 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know whether this is related but my battery life was horrible last night, even well after the indexing had finished. Maybe I had some flash thing open somewhere.
