A statue known as the Monument to the Three Charters for National Reunification, which symbolizes the hope for eventual reunification of the two Koreas, arches over a highway at the edge of Pyongyang, North Korea, seen on April 18, 2011. (AP Photo/David Guttenfelder)

Apparently some photos of North Korea have been going around the internet lately. This monument looks like it came out of a video game.

That is awesome, and also completely bonkers. You can see it very clearly on Google Maps, as well as these equally bonkers monuments in Pyongyang:

This is an artist's impression of the Ryugyong Hotel, which sat unfinished for 16 years and is finally being completed this year:

btw the Juche Tower (that big-arse tower with the flame on top) symbolises Kim Il-sung's own crepey brand of Communism. Every night the whole city's power is cut but that tower remains lit.

a video that includes most of those monuments, as well as lots of singing and dancing children and bored commuters http://vimeo.com/9028586

That really is awesome (and also quite distressing).

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 7 August 2011 06:36 (twelve years ago) link

There was a recent Planet Money podcast about N. Korea's economy - apparently one of the few things that they actually produce for export are giant monuments for crazy dictators in other countries. The others are counterfeit US $100 bills and crystal meth.

But, once washed, the design dissolves to reveal a message telling people to break with extremism.

Pretty big assumption these folks were making.
