if anyone has the capacity to take screengrabs from youtube, we could poll the facial-expressions-denoting-pleasure-in-the-mess-they-are-making amongst the players

it is funny how stubborn jagger is -- i bet if he hired t-bone burnett or someone and made a straightforward blues/folk/rock record he'd have grammys galore. but he sticks with the idea of being a current pop star for some reason. it's almost admirable.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

admirably terrible.

What the fuck is going on?

What The Fuck Is Going On, the debut album from SUPERHEAVY

tylerw, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:24 (twelve years ago) link

he could follow the Robert Plant example but nooooo – he wants to be Peter Pan.

I've read some stuff from Rick Rubin re:Wandering Spirit, and that's basically what he wanted to do for him on that album. They went as far as cutting a bunch of still-unreleased blues songs w/The Red Devils backing him up, but Jagger vetoed them in favor of stuff he was more "into".

That SuperHeavy vid is exceptionally poor.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 4 August 2011 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

and Wandering Spirit is his best solo record cuz it sounds the most Stonesy.

here are some of those red devils sessions: http://unheard78.blogspot.com/2009/08/mick-jagger-red-devils-famous-blues.html

"this cultural one-stop shop"

why is dave stewart in such high demand? has he done anything cool since the eurythmics? he seems to have this weird poor man's rick rubin reputation for no apparent reason.

i hear he has a killer wine cellar.

lol at wikipedia
Initially conceived to help promote the launch of a new platform being developed by Nokia for entertainment media on their smartphones,[citation needed] the band was originally composed of The Rolling Stones lead vocalist Mick Jagger, former Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart, Devon singer Joss Stone, and Bob Marley's youngest son Damian. Jagger and Stewart then called in Indian musician A.  R. Rahman[2]
Eventually the Nokia deal collapsed.[citation needed] They decided to continue, presenting themselves as having formed completely on their own, and not as a somewhat prefabricated unit, put together mainly for a communications corporation.[citation needed] The group began the works of their self-titled debut album in early 2009 when Jagger, Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian and Rahman experimented at a studio in Los Angeles, trying to "write songs which had meaning". They recorded about 35 hours of music with some songs originally lasting "an hour and 10 minutes" before they were whittled down.[3] The album was previewed at Jim Henson Studios, Los Angeles, on 30 June 2011. The band played eight of the recorded songs at the event.[4] Their debut single, "Miracle Worker", released on 6 July received mostly positive reviews.[5][6]

A good way of putting it. Maybe his guitar squiggles and beard signify sincerity. He's done decent yeoman's work for Bryan Ferry.

Let me point out for the record that Jagger's sports coat was fashionable in 1986.

Clearly Stewart is simply on the rebound from the disappointing failure of Platinum Weird:

Good god, what type of nonsense was that. Makes Chris Gaines look straightforward.

Basically, dude is like the British Don Was. Cred at some point, mostly known these days for being one of the few guys able to tolerate the whims of the rich and famous in the studio. Because I mean, God only knows what it's like to produce Mick Jagger.

Wikipedia entry definitely a must-read for fans of failed elaborate memes.

I can defend Stewart on the basis of Curve alone, but that's about it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 August 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

hm yeah, platinum weird! never heard of it. an elaborate, fascinating backsto ....zzzzzzz.

i think dinosaur types pick stewart because the last time they were vaguely aware of contemporary music Eurythmics were big

This is pretty much the culmination of everything Keith Richards was talking about wrt Jagger in the last half of his autobiography.

I thought that was Richard Manuel playing drums! Wonder why they didn't show pictures of him with the Band like they did with Sebastian, McGuinn and dude from the Rascals.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 4 August 2011 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

Waitaminute if that is Manuel, it was probably filmed right before he killed himself. That is sad.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 4 August 2011 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

My favorite Mick solo tune: "Throwaway," one helluva rocker from '87 with fiery Jeff Beck guitar.

jesus christ that video. I had to watch it twice now. I guess that's what happens when you form a band almost entirely consisting of singers.
