the escalating sadness at Michael Winner's decision to leave Britain while ignoring his own tweets saying that he's not is a new high for this medium.

Sir Chips Keswick (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link

i'm still getting used to #newtwitter. when i have a random person's tweet on my timeline, i assume it's been retweeted by somebody i'm following - how do i tell who this is?

tine nic (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

somewhere on the tweet it tells you "retweeted by [user]" iirc

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

i think

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

it used to on old twitter, but i can't find it on #newtwitter

tine nic (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

alright, say bob smith's retweeting jim smith -- this is what it looks like:

jimsmith Jim Smith [symbol] by bobsmith

the "by [username]" is who's doing the retweeting

it's right next to the retweeted person's name

I give Twitter approx 3 more years to age itself into social irrelevance.

Finally, I got round to creating a private list for my essential tweeters, i.e. the ones where I don't want to miss a single tweet. Having done that, I've opened the floodgates on my main stream, doubling the number of people I follow in one fell swoop. So the private list is now my main access point, and I can just dip my toe into the main stream whenever I feel like it. This is working out so much better.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 09:19 (twelve years ago) link

I've always thought that that kind of thing would be an excellent way of operating, but have not going round to creating such a list.

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:33 (twelve years ago) link

it's very, very useful

and you can move people on and off the private list depending on how much you feel like seeing their stuff at any given point, and no one can see

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:42 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, perhaps that's the best bit of all: nobody can see whether they're on the private list, so that puts an end to most follow/unfollow politics.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:11 (twelve years ago) link

Haha I was just thinking I'd use it to dishonestly unfollow people.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:25 (twelve years ago) link

Man, when I want to unfollow someone, I usually want to do it with giant smashing fists of blocking. What's the point of doing an unfollow if the unfollowed dolt doesn't know about it?

^^^^^only slightly tongue in cheek

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:31 (twelve years ago) link

Being the unfollowed dolt can really hurt.

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

There's someone on Twitter who, in the wake of the riots, has been unfollowing everyone who expresses a different-but-relatively-mainstream view to hers by basically going 'UNFOLLOW, CUNTS!' which is kinda OTT.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:42 (twelve years ago) link

Trust me, I know. That's why I save it only for ppl who really piss me off.

x-post you don't actually follow me, DC, how did you know? ;-)

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:43 (twelve years ago) link

There's really something about Twitter that turns me into an angry 8th grader, relational violence and all that. Makes me actually quite relieved that I never got into Facebook, like a whole nother level of passive aggression I don't want to have to trigger in myself or deal with in others.

actually thinking about all this has made me really quite unhappy now. Not a good can of worms to have opened up.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:51 (twelve years ago) link

it's odd how you can mull over unfollowing someone for a while, and every time they tweet they cross your mind, and then after you do it's like you forget they exist. tempting to take it too personally when you get unfollowed but really - apart from when i find that someone i actually know irl has unfollowed me, which i consider RUDE - the only times it's annoying are when people unfollow me after i tweet about things i love. uhhh if you don't want to see tweets about tennis or r&b why the FUCK follow me in the first place.

of course it could just be cuz i tweet quite a lot - when i unfollow it's b/c someone just doesn't stop tweeting ever, rather than people who perhaps aren't as interesting but tweet much less regularly. (obv there are v prolific tweeters i still follow but you have to be v much worth it for this to be the case)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:29 (twelve years ago) link

couple of friends have private and public twitters - would be tempted but no way would i keep from making mistakes there

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:30 (twelve years ago) link

Life's too short to be butthurt about being unfollowed on Twitter. You need to have a thick skin and just get on with it. Twitter's not, you know, blood brothers or anything.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:33 (twelve years ago) link

Life's too short to be butthurt by a snub that happens over the telephone instead of in person. You need to have a thick skin and just get on with it. The telephone is not, you know, blood brothers or anything.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

Okay well obviously if it's someone you know in real life there's a problem (which goes deeper than Twitter tbf) but if it's just crazygal_27 then who cares.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:56 (twelve years ago) link

Precisely.

some computers fuck this up kevin...my work computer doesn't display retweets properly exactly in the way you said.

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link

There are a couple of people who I know and like offline, whose tweets irritate the hell out of me, making me like them less. Therefore, I'd rather not have to see their tweets - but equally I don't want to offend by unfollowing. Private lists resolve this dilemma admirably. Then if they happen to say "did you see my tweet about x", I can just say "sorry, must have missed it, I don't always read everything on my timeline". They never need to know about the private list!

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:37 (twelve years ago) link

Somewhere in the karma-sensitive part of my brain, I am sure that people who are divas to their acquaintances on Twitter are engaged in a form of social one-upsmanship that says negative things about their own insecurities. Also, #firstworldproblems

"did you see my tweet about x" <-- if anyone said this to me IRL i would reply "i unfollow thee" and do the retweet sign with my fingers while sternly shaking my head

Haha I was just thinking I'd use it to dishonestly unfollow people.

There's a former co-worker of mine who passive-aggressively drops hints about each person who unfollows him. Diva.

I haven't unfollowed him not because I care about the inevitable tweet, but his passive-aggression is actually kind of funny from a distance. "I guess so-and-so was upset about my non-traditional views on JESUS."
