Forgot Cudi!

Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

cudi is a huge one for sure

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

i would probably say wiz is the least influential of that triumvirate bw listed

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

not sonically

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

the kendrick album is pretty much a direct descendent of 'kush & oj'

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

yeah this is definitely drake + khalifa + kudi/808s kanye

^bingo yeah this is what i was trying to get at

k3vin k., Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

the kendrick album is much diff than main attrakions tho

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I don't really get why Kendrick is being included in this convo

I mean I guess certain songs on his record are "spacy" but I don't see him as a part of this movement at all

my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

thats like, prog-pop-rap like lupe or BOB style wedded to drake w/ some wiz in there too. wiz's stoned melodic sound is a lot closer to max b (who he's claimed as an influence, and i hear it in song construction tho not rapping) than the kind of listless ~vibing~ i hear from main attrakions

eh but who knows

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

kendrick's tendencies are all ones i dislike in rap, its amazing that i like that lp as much as i do

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

i talked about this whole thing sorta in my review of "adhd"

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/12262-adhd/

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

main attrakionz are sorta their own subset & it's a bit harder to trace bcuz so much of the sound goes back to "i'm god"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

proto-cloud rap?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdH4NkKzbv4

^ would sound right at home on Kendrick's album

my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

oh for sure. even the corny pop hooks of latter-day lupe are on that kendrick record (and somehow come out much more listenable than lupe)

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

me like Lupe's first two albums ;_;

shining like national dog shit (Neanderthal), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

i like some joints on them too.

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

where does GRIND MODE-type rap fit into this

yeah me too, but I really like EARLY mixtape lupe... shit like:

yeah I definitely hear a vibe-music influence in a lot of this stuff, though I don't know if that music had enough of an impact to have influenced the dudes making these beats

my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

like, this is so vibe-y:

I don't really feel like vibe music is at all connected to any of this stuff?

dizzy gillespie plays a sax/ me, myself, i love to (max) (The Reverend), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

i dont think clams is at all connected to it, but there is an atmosphericness to 'vibe music' that does feel ~related~ even if not in a directly influential sense

Yeah, "I'm God" definitely feels like the breaking point for the Clams Casino/Keyboard Kid/Main Attrakionz end of this (but not Kendrick Lamar, who is more Wiz-influenced, or G-Side, who really at the end of the day just wish they were in Goodie Mob).

dizzy gillespie plays a sax/ me, myself, i love to (max) (The Reverend), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno, vibe music is more like e-ed out party shit than introverted stoner music.

When I saw that Deej found a way to mention Max B and his influential rhyme style, I let out an audible groan in this ramen restaurant

anyway...possibly good rap music - new juvie album called 'rejuvenation'

I feel that, but I don't think it was really intentional? Wiz just kind of made a more crossover-palatable version of his usual aesthetic and it ended up at that point. Most actual vibe rap is way faster though.

right. it probably was unintentional... idk what stargate are listening to. but a lot of the synths sound the same even if they're deployed in diff ways

obv vibe music >> cloud rap

art of pretend non-thread reading

'vibe music' is a fine name as long as no one ever uses it in actual published work a la 'cloud rap'

Most of the Main Attrakionz stuff I've heard is p boring (altho I feel like that has more to do with them as rappers than their cloud-vibe), but this is a total banger:

dizzy gillespie plays a sax/ me, myself, i love to (max) (The Reverend), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

imo it has to do with them as rappers & them as songwriters. and the one-note-ness of their approach to cloud rap

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

I tend to dislike all rap mixtapes presented by clothing labels, as a general rule. Though Mishka does have some dope clothes.

my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

I had no idea Mishka was a clothing label.
