if yr working with complex documents you should be using TeX imo

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Monday, 22 August 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

hell yes

I knew I was in deep when I wrote a love letter (to a woman, not to an equation, get your mind out of the gutter) in TeX.

Euler, Monday, 22 August 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

i only learned about TeX from ilx and i think it sounds disgustingly savage. i want a world where i can lay out html in a WYSIWIG editor and have it turned into code, not where you have to use tags just to get your word processing documents to print fucking italics.

I write most things in Apple TextEdit or Google Docs. I had Neo Office because I was tired of the busted up ancient version of cracked Office I had. Then through my company I got the full latest Office for Mac for 19 dollars, so I couldn't pass that up. But I generally write in TextEdit or Docs and do all my formatting in InDesign.

Hey I got mine for $10. 2 licenses too. Crazy. Seriously still don't know why.

Yeah. Maybe was 10. Can't remember.

dan selzer, Monday, 22 August 2011 04:26 (twelve years ago) link

joe is super-OTM about office vs iwork

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Monday, 22 August 2011 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

Seems that a cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 is extremely imminent.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 08:09 (twelve years ago) link

t-mobile just gave me a brand-new one for free; maybe they will start paying people to use them?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 11:05 (twelve years ago) link

so yeah, went for office in the end. installed it, it asked for an update, i agreed, end result = complete system hang, had to switch it off, thx m$

still, the box is nice, dunno why the rest of microsoft don't 'get' how to do nice things

Once Were Moderators (DG), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

Too many directions. I think the mac office team is still relatively small, has a lot of in-team visibility, and actually has goals for specific releases.

From everything I've heard from people who have worked there in some capacity, every other team is kind of a mess.

got a 11" mba but kind of having second thoughts, the text is so small on these things!

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

Can you not make the text bigger? (soz if that's an obvious response)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I just did and it helps. feel like it'll take a day or two for me to 'mentally adjust' even though the text is prob as big as it is on my mbp

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

I love our mba11.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 03:55 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know, tagging for layout was what I liked about Word Perfect.

cant wait for my 17" mba

the default text size is unreasonably small imo (think some site calculated that the mba has the highest PPI of all the laptop/desktops?). but I've bumped up the default text size in chrome and all the apps I use. (the only casualty so far is the apple store website.)

full screen mode helps, wish chrome would hurry up and implement it natively.

the 13" has screen that feels much 'larger' but I'm philosophically opposed to it. for example, I don't feel as if I could whip the 13" across the room with a wicked twist of the wrist and take someone's head off with it. the 11", on the other hand...

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

of course all of this would be pretty much moot if apple would hurry up and turn on resolution independence in lion.

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

I have the high-res macbook pro screen and it's deliciously pixel-dense

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

my eyes still kind of hurt from looking at this thing. gonna give it a few more days to see if I can 'adjust'

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

I also have the hi-res mbp 15". When working at a desk, I'm fine. When sitting on the couch with it in my lap surfing the web, I have to enlarge each webpage.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:14 (twelve years ago) link

i've got all my stuff set to large print, p much.

squintiness is why i'm thinking i would not want a mba as my main computer

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

I think the 13" would be okay, the display seems fine on that one. it's weird, I've got the text size set to pretty much the same size as my mbp, but it's still somehow more eye-strainy to read on the mba. hopefully it'll go away in the next few days.

the iPad doesn't seem as bad either, despite having a higher PPI I think?

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

Depends on the iPad. The first gen ones are pretty low res, the second gen just uses really big (pixel-wise) controls

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

wait I thought the first and second gen had identical displays?

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

urgh, they do, I was crossing iPad and iPhone in my head. Read "iPhone" for what I said, only with 3rd/4th gen :)

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

haha yeah that's why I wish apple would go ahead and do some sort of resolution independence.

just reduced the brightness level and that seems to help. might play around with contrast settings too. ctrl + opt + apple + <,> adjusts contrast, did not know that!

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

huh, so it does

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

okay eyes feel much better after toning down the brightness. does a MBA shot ambient light sensor?

sorry for clutterin up the new apple lust objects thread with a liveblog of new apple first world order problems

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

if it's the latest model w/ backlit keyboard then yes

Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

dayo do u have Flux

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

I had it but uninstalled it on my mbp cause I was doing my photo editing at night and it was too jarring to switch to the blueness of the O.G. display around flux lush ambient orange amber burnt sienna

not gonna use this one for photos at all so maybe I'll flux it up!

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

i like to think there's been a lot of ~deep thinking~ at apple about resolution independence and when we get it it will be magical

lukas, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

replace "resolution independence" in the above with anything, i guess

lukas, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

i don't even know what it is!!

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

it means no matter how pixel-dense the display, text and graphics just scale appropriately. eg the iPhone 4 has 4x as many pixels as the iPhone 3, but everything is the same size - just smooooth.

unfortunately, resolution independence is not a trivial matter of just making sure you have a bunch of vector icons.

lukas, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

ohhhhhh

so for example my vision-challenged mom could scale up the size of everything and it wouldn't look chunky and stupid?? nice and pretty, just bigger?

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that's the ideal

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

tho it looks like everyone else wants it for insanely-high-rez photo/video while maintaining usably sized icons/menus etc

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

would also be great for asian markets - imo the default font size of asian text is too small on ANY mac desktop or laptop

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

[racist joke]

Am I the only one bummed out by how loud the fan(s) in the new Air is/are?

Bryan, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:09 (twelve years ago) link

which is the quietest air? I thought the new ones might be fanless like ipads.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

8-2 fruity (cozen), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

would it be possible to have cryogenic computing, where the signals cool down the transmission medium somehow
