Did you ever go to 1992, Keith? It was Belgian Nu Beat.

I have just seen the Optimo CD in Fopptimo, but it looked like just one CD instead of two CDs. Was that a limited edition thing, or whattimo?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Peter, I'm still trying to figure out how to get back to the 1970s, but 1992 might be on the agenda. Tag's told me all about Belgian nu beat. I hope it's as good as Plastic Bertrand and Front 242.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Everyone dropped out. I had shaved my legs and everything! (I had to shave around the bruises, ouch OUCH)

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

You people.

Alix with an i? (alix), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, and "New to town"?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Dahlin, can you REPORT BACK on your excellent new job please?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Glasgow has so many questions, to answer.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I would like to ask Glasgow why

Alix with an i? (alix), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Keith, it *is* Front 242. And all the little Front 242s.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah... Well, I guess that answers your question. A guy who sat next to me at work used to listen to Front 242. Despite his big expensive headphone and the amplifier he bought to put on his desk at work, it still sounded like the road gang with pneumatic drills to me.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:54 (nineteen years ago) link

what a glasgow.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Did you ever go to 1992, Keith? It was Belgian Nu Beat.

it was a bit more than that but i am astounded anyone recalls that night.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I don't recall it... Where was it?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

jesus.....

a crazy weekend, in every sense.

I must be getting old cos last night I went for a meal with Linds instead of going to Optimo, we could have gone after but I am pretty sure I actually said "let's go home and watch TV".

On the other hand Friday was a long night of exertion. Mayer was amazing, he really is an amazing DJ, I've never seen anyone mix tracks in and out at the right time, so many times, makes it clear why so many of those tunes don't work when I play them!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:44 (nineteen years ago) link

'old'

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Ronan, you have finally joined the rest of us boring bastards. Oh well.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

my bones ache!

it was nice to meet you Lucy, and Richard too, for the first time, and Cathy aswell, and to see everyone I'd met already again. I wish I was still there, not back in Dublin to my bloody thesis!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

It was nice to meet you too Ronan! I am unfortunately far too boring to go to Optimos and Whorehouses. On Sunday, I was even too boring to go to the pub quiz. Oh well! Glad you had a good Glasgow.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

It was cool to meet you too Ronan. Lovely to see the rest of you again too.

It's the first night of my holiday and I've spent the entire night watching Jimi Hendrix videos. Can any of your readers beat that?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

well apparently they want to use my old news skills before letting me loose on the letters, unfortunately, so i spent a few hours writing stories rather than editing them. hmmmm. then they sent me home absurdly early and told me to come back at noon. it might mean my byline in the paper tho, so look out for my stunning handiwork in the next few weeks.
i wish i could have optimoed. instead i was stuck doing the most mind numbingly boring shift at the smirror, during which the rest of the staff buggered off to the pub for two hours and i was left to get a manicure from a beauty school student. journalism eh?

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

you've never met me ronan!

report from mayer upcoming, soon.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I cannot beat that, Keith, no. But I have got a Clash DVD.

Another holiday already? You've only just finished you arse holiday.

Yes, it was more than Belgian Nu Beat. I think I remember Asbestos Lead Asbestos. Which Belgian Nu Beat group did 'White Rabbit'?

I can't remember the name of the palce, but it was upstairs from a club inhabited by Glaswegians of a certain age on the razzle. You'd go down for the fag nmachine and end up entranced by all the dodgy old geezers on the pull.

It was between the chip shop and Queen Street station. Which probably makes it Queen Street.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:39 (nineteen years ago) link

The Airplane Crashers did White Rabbit.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Thank you! Very prompt.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I will resist the urge to dig out EBM and nu-beat records when I get home.

I am trying Arab Strap at the Tron, in Glasgow, on Sunday.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm glad you capitalised that, to avoid possible confusion.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:17 (nineteen years ago) link

it was upstairs at 46 west george street / daddy warbucks. it only ran for 6 weeks.

'white rabbit is becoming a habit...'

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I had fun in Glasgow too. I went to the CCA on Friday to see weird Finnish bands. On Saturday I spent some time in Mono, and then went to the CCA to see weird experimental bands from all over the shop. Sunday I went to Mono again for breakfast, then to the Byres Road area for fun, then back to Mono for pints. I didn't see anyone from ILX, unless some of the people I did see are secret ILX posters.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Glaswegians of a certain age on the razzle

I think this is basically me now. Although I think I might think of myself as from Edinburgh now... Altogether classier.

Obviously the term 'Belgian nu beat' passed me by back then. I'm kind of glad it did in some sense. It was something to do with a guy swimming. On the chart show at least.

It doesn't sound like your sort of thing Peter...Did you go to this '1992'? Amongst others, I went to a semi-crusty club called 'Delerium' in 1992. They played Ozric Tentacles.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

DV, i was at CCA. I was often in the downstairs bit at 4pm playing chess on a napkin with my friend, drinking beers and eating chips and smoking.

Finnish bands were amazing. Wolf Eyes blew me away.

I randomly got spotted at Mayer thing by ILX dudes, who were all lovely people... it was great to meet some real ILXers.

I think my friend's friend Marceline actually lived in the flat ILX dudes went back to.

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

just to add confusion, '1992' was actually in 1989.

i don't think i spotted any ilx or ilm'ers all weekend. perhaps name badges would be a help in future? i might have seen some at mayer but much had been drunk by that point in time.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

she does, yes.

it was nice to meet you, too.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I see... It was a kind of 'European Union' thing going on. I think I may have met you before briefly in the old 13th note Mr.Stirmonster maybe five years ago... You know Joss Moorkens don't you?

Mr.Stringbender, I am intrigued by your Belgian Nu Beat past. Incidentally, my current plan is to come to London for a 'knees-up' around the old Joanna, maybe Sunday/Monday/Tuesday next week? How does that sound?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

today i graduated to letters! woo hoo! so you'll have me to thank tomorrow for photos of tom selleck and poison.

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

jed and I, at least, saw you at mayer, stirmonster.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, was the Colin guy I shook hands with Jed then?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, yes, sorry.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't be sorry! That's cool!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

: )

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I see... It was a kind of 'European Union' thing going on

yes. it was a really bad concept based around 'music without frontiers'. sadly it wasn't a knockout.

and RJG, yr right, i did see jed and yrself.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yes, and i do know joss though we seem to have lost touch now.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

We should organize a Scotland knees-up the next time Joss is over. I'm off for my own mini-knees-up now.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I was sorry not to hook up w/ Tim H and other ILXers - my friend Frank, who I was staying w/ in Dennistoun, took me on a fantastic walking tour of the city, from the Necropolis to the University, and by the time that had finished I had to head straight to the CCA.

I also enjoyed the Finnish hippies on Friday - particularly ES - and lots of the noizemakers on Saturday night, tho' I found Wolf Eyes a bit jockish this time round (w/ his meaty arm punching and freshly shaved head John Olson now looks like one of the High School Nazis in Animal House or something...) - INSANELY loud tho

My highlight was actually Hototogisu on Thursday night - Matthew Bower and Marcia Bassett from Double Leopards making VAST drones from just gutted gtrs microphones and amps - pure white light from the mouth of infinity - Virgin Eye Blood Brothers also dished up some gd sick shit right after

I sort've fell in love w/ Glasgow

Andrew J L, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

People I was confusedly burbling to in the pub on Friday about someone called Andrew something that posted on the Try Glasgow More thread and might be supposed to be being in the pub, Andrew JL would be that same person I meant.

Ally C, are you going to watch Chelsea v Liverpool tomorrow in a pub?

me to sam on saturday " i dunno why i feel so bad today, i wasn't that drunk"

him " er... are you joking? you were FUCKING WASTED"

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

haha you were too!

but no matter. it's all part of the fun. I saw that Fabrice Lig track in Rub-A-Dub the next day but didn't listen to it, I'll be gutted I bet when I download it off your gmail and like it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i didn't make it to optimo on time - glad to hear i didn't let you and alba down. i wonder if Nick schmidt went?
