We have a guy almost exactly like that, except he doesn't attempt to sing the tune of whatever his Song Line Of The Day is - he just does this lilting almost spoken word thing that's perilously close to being The William Shatner Treatment.

"We could... be heroes... just ... for one day"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah Onimo, that's what the boss here does a lot of the time. Other times he sings it AT THE TOP OF HIS VOICE and claps along. It's quite a small building and normally very quiet so you can almost hear a collective groan when he arrives around lunchtime.

He also makes strange noises in his throat and if he's not singing walking around muttering "yep.. yep.. yep.. yep.."

I could go on.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:20 (eighteen years ago) link

one of my co-workers spent an entire evening telling the whole staff about how chucky "beats off" in the movie SEED OF CHUCKY. Complete with HAND MOTIONS! She even started telling the 70 year old volunteer about it. Definitely reminded me of a 12 year old who just discovers something NAUGHTY AND NEW, as opposed to a 49 year old woman. It was sort of more amusing than annoying though.

It seems like this guy is slowly losinghis mind.

Also: 02/06/2005 : "You gotta give me some kind of sandal"(?)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

My favourite was the "In the air on broadway... aaaaaooooohhhh BUGGER!" one. It started quite quiet but by the end of BUGGER, it was a shout.

Also the time he was wandering round for days saying "Ginko Biloba" was bizarre.

I think he lost his mind some time ago. God knows how the company keeps going.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha! I'm laughing to myself reading it. It's often not so funny at the time. I love the bit where he mis-spells "R.E.S.P.E.C.T"

Surmounter, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

My usually okay co-worker has turned into a raging ass over the past couple of weeks. Everytime you tell him the phone is for him he slams whatever happens to be in his hand at the time (pencil, pen, mouse, whatever) and starts cursing. This is when he's not just randomly throwing things around his desk in frustration.

We get it dude, we're all fucking busy. Deal.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

my (female) co-worker stares at my chest indiscreetly when she's talking to me. totally weirds me out.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:15 (sixteen years ago) link

and annoys me. obv.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:16 (sixteen years ago) link

ppl exist and i just wanna exist by myself 2day.

aggressive self-importance in the workplace is the worst. well, either that or staring at someone's chest? geez!

Surmounter, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:17 (sixteen years ago) link

This same co-worked also constantly bitches about how he has "too much work to do", yet leaves at 5:00 on the button every single day. Which, whatever, but its annoying when everyone else in the office is routinely pulling 10-12 hour days.

He also shuts down all his programs at 4:50 and sits there with the Windows log off dialog box up on his screen for ten minutes, waiting for 5:00 so he can click 'Log Off'.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

"co-worker"

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link

staring at someone's chest? geez!

I often catch our intern looking at my cleavage. But when he sees I notice he quickly looks away. He's 20. I feel bad for his lack of impulse control.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:23 (sixteen years ago) link

um he needs a punch in the face? the co-worker, not the intern. the intern just needs a girlfriend.

Surmounter, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:24 (sixteen years ago) link

my co-worker is female, straight and has bigger boobs than me, so i don't know what she finds so fascinating.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

The fact that yours are smaller? Perhaps she's considering a reduction.

i can't be 100% sure (well i could be about the first if i demanded she *prove* it) but i'm 99.9% sure. and she doesn't stare at them in a "i'd like to get my hands/lips on those" kinda way. she just stares. i'm less irritated and more comfortable with the gropings i get from my italian co-workers at the restaurant.

One of my coworkers has an annoying habit of being a biotch.

OK sometimes Coworker: My neice isn't even 2 years old and she knows her alphabet and numbers... and the woman at the daycare center was saying she's exceptionally smart for her age...
Killjoy biotch coworker: You know, that's not always a good thing though.
OK s coworker: What?
Killjoy biotch coworker: A kid being that smart... It can be sign of severe social disorders.

Then today when a coworker was talking about how well-behaved her kid is, Killjoy biotch coworker says, "You know, you really don't want a kid who always does what you ask them to do. No one does. No, seriously. Those are the kids that no one likes."

KitCat, Thursday, 18 October 2007 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to date a girl who yelled at me whenever I clipped my nails in public. Then, 10 minutes later, she'd ask for the clipper.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a coworker who would suggest income-inappropriate "enrichment" activities for our clients' children, such as Broadway shows or art classes for children whose families struggled to put food on the table. I'd suggest something like "go to storytime at the library (free,)" and she'd be like "riding lessons are great!" It'd make the clients so uncomfortable.

miryam, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

There is this girl who runs the (short) length of our office hallway. Why?

kate78, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:46 (sixteen years ago) link

In my last job one of the accounting girls did that! She was a short bouncy asian lass - very nice and friendly, but very touchy feely and a bit TOO chirpy, and she always fecking ran/bounced everywhere, which made this loud THUMP THUMP noise (nb she was not fat or anything).

Trayce, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i have one of those too. she's a model but thunders like the mighty rhinoceros when she runs!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:19 (sixteen years ago) link

It's the worst when she wears flip-flops: THUMP-thwack-THUMP-thwack! Makes me wanna string some fishing line between the cubicles...

kate78, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:59 (sixteen years ago) link

A friend of mine that I work with will listen to music at her cubicle as she works, which is fine...but she sings along with it, and she has this squealy whiny voice.

What's worse is that she does it with the song on loop for about a half an hour and sings the same passage over and over.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

OMG that is kind of awesome, but having grown up in a family of seven, I can tune out and/or appreciate the silliness of such repetitive noise.

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, the only other person in the building at the moment has been chattering away for constantly for half an hour in the next office. I know he's alone. I know he doesn't have a mobile phone. I know he's not on the landline because all our phones have indicators to show which lines are in use. But he really sounds as though he's having a conversation. WTF?

James Morrison, Friday, 19 June 2009 02:11 (fourteen years ago) link

eight months pass...

I have avoided posting on this thread, but can't stand it anymore.

Dude in my office is a trainwreck of a coworker.

We are attorneys. Ergo, our job includes some petty annoyances which you really just need to get over. These can include demolition of your social plans on a semi-regular basis, lack of regard for your social life by coworkers or superiors, long hours, lack of predictability of schedule.

In other words, you need to be flexible and willing to work to make things work.

All I hear is constant bitching about "I was planning on doing this, and this motherfucker gave me an assignment to do that! Fuck him!" or "Damnit, I had to work this weekend." or "Man, I work too hard."

And its always someone else's fault that these things have happened to him. Its never his fault at all.

All this in an office of 10 total people. Dude. People will hear you, whether they want to or not.

SHUT UP!!!!

Now, if this was his only annoying habit, it would be easier to deal with. Some people deal with things by complaining about them. But it isn't. The other stuff:

- He's an only child, and acts like it around the office by assuming that you want to hear every minute detail about whatever he has done or will be doing. In the course of discussing things at the office, I have heard about the following: his girlfriend's repeated urinary tract infections, his dog's incontinence, his mom's overuse of medical marijuana, and several other strains of conversation which are not worth going into.

- Along those same lines, he always assumes that we're going to eat lunch together. Bro, its not elementary school. Sometimes, I just want to eat in silence and stare at the wall. And not have to hear about any of the above-mentioned items.

- He constantly...CONSTANTLY...fiddles with his crotch. Dude.

- His bad breath is overwhelming. Like, by the end of the day, the hallway outside of his office smells like his halitosis.

- In general, he has this overblown sense of entitlement which I just don't get. He is rude to people, short-tempered, and treats subordinates like shit, which they hold against him. All of this seems to stem from the fact that he's an attorney.

Oh, and he overquotes movies incorrectly. All the time.

Most of these calls have the running theme of "Oh god, I can't be there at that time, I have to work. I work in a law office" etc. YOU COME IN AT 11AM EVERY FUCKING MORNING. YOU CAN WAKE UP EARLY AND LET THE SUPER IN BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

Okay, I don't know if this is a "habit", but this really nice guy moved to the desk behind me and I have discovered that he makes this loud sharp throat-clearing noise every few minutes.
