Listen to John on the outro to "Say That You Love Me"! Listen to that fucker start to get all "rococo" and shit yet bet completely 100% in that fucking beat. God, he was unbelievably great. Him and Mick. What a rhythm section. Unreal in their kick-assness.

Tusk is one of the five greatest rock and roll albums of all time, probably only second to After the Goldrush and maybe Radio City.
Then Play On is also great - I bought that record a few years ago and to this day it is the ONLY record my girl has ever stolen from me. "It's mine," she said, plainly, and it remains in her collection as we speak.
Rmours is also brilliant, duh. Search the "Classic Albums" DVD of Rumours (Aja too, while you're at it, but that's another thread). Search all the Peter Green era records.
After Mirage, the records are all spotty but ALL contain a few songs worth the dollar or two you'll pay for the vinyl. Lindsey Buckingham is one of my all time favorite guitarists - so imaginative, ambitious, and just a tad insane.

you are right about the production. I think I could write a whole book about it, had I a flair for language. But, allow me to highlight (these are a couple PRODUCTION highlights [as Jim said]; I take the technical musical performances of Mick, John, Christine and Lindsey as read):
- the backing vocals. It's like some kind of psychedelic doo-wop!! Seriously, those voices that start low in the mix, and come in and go "Come .. on .. and" "Hold me!" Wow.
Like, Lindsey is all like, yeah, I've got your doo-wop right here! How do you like THESE backing vocals?
- but, the ultimate point in the song, both song-writing and production-wise, is the breakdown that occurs at about the 2:30 mark, after Linsey's brilliant solo ends .. a total breakdown, with nothing but Christine's pristine piano and Lindsey beautiful acoustic guitar. WOW!!!!!!!
(actually, an even better thing about the pure PRODUCTION of this cut, is the way that acoustic guitar sort of creeps into the mix at about the 2:00 mark --- just listen to that acoustic guitar start strumming those chords behind Lindsey's solo ... and seconds later, there comes that great breakdown with the piano/acoustic-guitar bliss)
and then of course Lindsey's great finger-picking outro solo .. and boo-yah
best band ever

Played "Trouble" from Lindsey's solo Law and Order a few weeks back and it sounded damn good....
Once was going through donations for the Record Fair and had SO many copies of Tusk I actually made a Box of Tusk! 3 bucks a pop and they all went too, so, there ya go.

I did enjoy that "Classic Albums" look at "Rumours". In fact, I've got this elaborate theory that rock 'n roll record production was at its creative zenith back aroound '76-79, until the digital age came along and spoiled everything. I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about though....

― electricsound, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:24 (sixteen years ago) link
Buckingham seems like the kind of guy who, after hearing your demos, would mumble, "Mm, yeah, great, lemme think about it," then not return your phone calls for months. Meanwhile, he's adding eight million guitar overdubs and crazy harmonies.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:26 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah I think the deal with Buckingham as producer would be you'd have to cede total control to him. not all producers are like that and most artists can't handle it because they have been raised to think that The Artist must have The Vision etc
maybe I should call Lindsay up though and see if he's got some time in June

Anyway, Future Games: their prog rock, Pink Floyd-y album. Long songs, heavy Kirwan influence. I kind of wish they'd had another album or two in this vein
you've heard the drogonfly single, right? recorded right after welch joined i think. so spacey. the welch/kirwan lineup is my favorite

Linsey Buckingham is label-less? That's outrageous, unless it's by choice. Was it?

Ok I worship the band. But whoever wrote that 1995's Buckingham/Nicksless Time was worthwhile owes me the 60:19 that allmusic says it took me to listen to this Olive Garden rock. Seriously - remember that $15/plate dinner you had after some boring milestone in your life? The one with funky breadsticks, the "authentic" entrée created by corporate committee, the glass of wine you didn't like much but drank anyway cuz it conferred class upon you? No? Exactly! That's this album which even Mick and the McVies probably don't remember, though I bet Dave Mason and Bekka Bramlett (who learned little from ma and pa) have fond memories. So, yeah destroy.
Now watch - some freakshow will come out of the fleetwoodwork and tell us we're missing out on the good vibrations from Behind the Mask.

A pretty wonderful late Peter Green era concert has just popped up on Wolfgang's Vault. Early '70 in London. It sort of freaks me out how much neat stuff has surfaced on that site.
