your rim looks cooked btw

god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

I thought so, but I was holding out some insane hope that they could just plane it down or something.

Manchester United 8 (EIGHT) Arsenal 2 (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 28 August 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

Re-using the old hub is definitely fine & should still work out cheaper. What hub is it?

just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 28 August 2011 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

Rims and hubs are Mavic Aksium Race. Someone has suggested filing the rim down with an emery board.

Manchester United 8 (EIGHT) Arsenal 2 (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 29 August 2011 08:49 (twelve years ago) link

scratch looks deep enough to be structural

caek, Monday, 29 August 2011 11:52 (twelve years ago) link

Could reuse the hub but might b cheaper to get a new aksium race wheel, especially in end of season sales. (apparently they are an arse pain to build and true because of the straight pull spokes).

Might be worth looking if Mavic has a crash replacement programme that applies.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 29 August 2011 13:14 (twelve years ago) link

I've taken the bike into my local shop for them to check it over. They reckon they can file the rim OK, but on closer inspection both wheels need to be trued a little bit, the headset is slighlty loose, and my left pedal is making strange noises.

Sorry about the spill, NBS! Facial injuries, especially, are awful/awesome for looking like you really did something over the weekend.

I've said it in other places, but for the record I did 15 miles yesterday in sheer desperation, because if I didn't get out of the house I was going to have caffeine + inactivity seizures. Caught in post-tropical storm rain squall in the middle there, but dried off by the end.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Monday, 29 August 2011 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

26 quick solo miles this morning, and about 17 leisurely ones along the river this afternoon with the wife. I need a few more and I'll have done 500 in August.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

get well soon nbs, and yeah and file that smooth and see how it goes.

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 August 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

i had a mystery hr ride saturday. normally my max max hr is 167 bpm, but saturday i went hard and sustained 170, maxed at 177. no idea how that could happen unless my hrm is fucked up.

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 August 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

I got my bike back from the shop yesterday - they seem to think the rim will be OK, but will inevitably wear the brake blocks down more quickly, they sorted out the various other problems. I can't ride at the moment with my leg in its current state so I haven't been able to check.

I'm a bit concerned that one of the cuts might be becoming infected (it's going red around the scabbing and none of the various other cuts I've got is doing that) and I'm cursing myself for not going to hospital on Saturday (although if I had done I would have missed seeing my mate for another year). I've been googling for information to see whether I should try to see a nurse/doctor tomorrow and rather worryingly came across some advice that said if you've had a deep cut from a metal object you should get a tetanus jab immediately. Yipes. I thought that was just for animal bites. I haven't had a jab for at least 14 years and an oily chain ring is certainly a metal object.

Get yourself to A&E, dude.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

In other news, I did somewhere between 25 and 35 miles today (unsure due to GPS user error!), which means I've done over 500 miles in August.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

NB&S you will initially feel a pulsation under heavy braking, but the brake pad matter will eventually fill in the groove to some extent in my experience.

Puff Daddy, whoever the fuck you are. I am dissapoint. (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

A self-healing rim - sounds good.

I've been given antibiotics for my infected cut, but apparently won't need a tetanus jab or a wooden leg. Was told not to cycle for a few more days (not that I was planning to).

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 1 September 2011 12:13 (twelve years ago) link

Tetanus is only caught from rusty things, I thought? That is 8-yo me talking, though. Idg the science behind it.

brb recalibrating my check engine light (Laurel), Thursday, 1 September 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

nah, c. tetani is found all over the dang place, in spore form. soil, etc.

the reason rusty things are dangerous is because, unlike most things Outside and Near Children Playing, rusty things can be sharp, and you can cut yourself on them. c. tetani, an obligate anaerobe, is now in yr flesh and away from icky oxygen, and free to flourish and crap out neurotoxin like a jerk.

31 miles for breakfast in a smidgeon under 2 hours.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 3 September 2011 08:58 (twelve years ago) link

3.4 miles! My leg didn't hurt and the bike seems OK (although the rim made a shrf...shrf...shrf sound whenever I braked).

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 10:18 (twelve years ago) link

That 31 miles did my shoulder in. Not been on the bike since, and wont be for another few days at least. Glad you're back in the saddle, NBS.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

Monday was one of my last hard training days of the season. 75 miles in 3 hours flat with 1500 feet of climbing.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

Alone? That sounds incredible. I couldn't get anywhere near that.

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

Not alone, haha. I'm still sore 2 days later.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

Even so, my best ever race-in-the-bunch performance was 24mph for 60 miles. Doing 75 miles at 25mph as a training ride sounds pretty hardcore.

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

Hopefully, I will reap some benefit out of it!

lukas, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 16:30 (twelve years ago) link

My bike's back in the shop to try and sort the alarming creaking noise that's cost me £90 so far. Hopefully I'll get it back at the end of the day fixed, but at this point, any progress would be a joy.

On another subject, what kind of frame bags, other than saddle bags, have people used successfully? I'm thinking in particualr of ones you might attach in front of the handlebars with a decent capacity. Any recommendations?

Mark C, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:33 (twelve years ago) link

ha ha, S1mon from FNRTTC has pointed me at decathlon, him and suz1e both have one and not being so waterprooof apart, they love them. Probably not as big as you want though. Are you considering going rucksack-free?

problem chimp (Porkpie), Thursday, 8 September 2011 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

11 stop-start miles on north-east London streets. I'm considering entering a 3rd/4th-cat race on Saturday at Hog Hill - it's the kind of event where I would struggle at the best of times, so I don't expect great things now, but I might do it anyway as it's the last road race event I can enter this season (without substantial travel). I don't feel injured now, but I'm obviously not race fit: only 45 minutes of racing in the last 2.5 months, and that was brought to an abrupt end by a crash followed by 11 days without riding at all.

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 8 September 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

Are you considering going rucksack-free?

Hell no! I just know that on a 2-day trip in the UK, I completely stuffed a rucksack but didn't take more than a catch-all jacket and a change of clothes. 3 days on the continent, in changeable/wet/cold season, I anticipate a fair bit more stuff being necessary.

just the thing for the nordzeefietsroute. Mark and I are doing 3 days in Holland at the end of the month, cycling about a bit in lovely, *flat* holland. I will need to learn to draft properly.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

that pic is actually a winter training bike. dogs are notoriously heavy and heavier bikes are better for training, as you well know

cozen, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

At this time of year you can probably get away with a lighter breed like a Jack Russell, but by December you really want to be hauling around a labrador.
