Zorro and RHCP ones made me giggle, Clapton one is most scathing. I don't get the 75% Jeremys one?

I'm not gonna stick up for the quality journalism of People magazine but Elvis Costello = "bullshit for sad suburban sub-literates" at this point. he is well-known, he's a familiar face, he's been in Austin Powers, knocked up Diana Krall, is always doing middlebrow collabs, putting out albums for the generation that still buys CDs etc.

the ones that made me dislike the speaker (even) more: aguilera, weller

goole, Friday, 16 September 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

here's a review he was mentioned in from this year

Add Lucinda Williams to the list of life's blessings that should be counted on the touching title track of her new album. Indeed, the singer-songwriter shows no signs of slowing the creative roll she has been on since 2007's West. Her latest, coproduced by Grammy winner Don Was, finds the tough-voiced Williams in a tender mood on ballads like the sweetly comforting "Born to Be Loved" and "Copenhagen," an elegy for her late manager. But another death-a friend's suicide-drives her into angry rocker mode on "Seeing Black," one of three cuts endowed with Elvis Costello on electric guitar.

Not to dwell on something said one hundred and fifty years ago but...this idea that British people are pale, miserable and sickly (i.e. "gay") and don't listen to James Brown was kind of tiresome at the time.

Chez Dahmier (Mount Cleaners), Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

am I right about morrissey being "asexual" though? I had a friend who worked security detail on moz's hotel room after a merriweather show in the early 1990s, and he reported that morrissey "only wanted hugs".

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Morrissey used to make that claim on the reg iirc, doesn't mean it was true. Always read it as code for "unwilling to come out yet to the notoriously open and tolerant indie boy community"

the island badger is an ageless pirate (Pillbox), Saturday, 17 September 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

think he might have been going for an 'unexpected angle'

the wrong terry to fuckwit (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 17 September 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

Slowdive hate is down to the NME's shoegaze coverage and Richey deciding they were a bunch of apolitical schnorrers

When Wayne Coyne said everyone he'd met in showbiz was pretty cool, except for Richard Ashcroft who was a massive dick, I thought ok, Wyane Coyne is a super nice guy and Richard Ashcroft is obviously a massive dick. When he said Arcade Fire were pricks I thought that was unexpected, but he's a super nice guy so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If I hear him mouth off about one more rock star though...
