ha, i was just thinking that it's the least icy out of all of these, but the only one that made me lol. nick cave is my runner-up.

The donuts one is great but it took me a minute because I read it thinking donuts was code for something.

Hanna one is awesome because, well, she is awesome.

A lot of the other best ones already mentioned but I LOLd hard at this because he sounds so bitter:

Rick James on Prince: "A little short ego-ed fucker who I had a feeling didn't like people of his own race and wanted to be white and taller."

I'm not gonna stick up for the quality journalism of People magazine but Elvis Costello = "bullshit for sad suburban sub-literates" at this point. he is well-known, he's a familiar face, he's been in Austin Powers, knocked up Diana Krall, is always doing middlebrow collabs, putting out albums for the generation that still buys CDs etc.

here's a review he was mentioned in from this year

Add Lucinda Williams to the list of life's blessings that should be counted on the touching title track of her new album. Indeed, the singer-songwriter shows no signs of slowing the creative roll she has been on since 2007's West. Her latest, coproduced by Grammy winner Don Was, finds the tough-voiced Williams in a tender mood on ballads like the sweetly comforting "Born to Be Loved" and "Copenhagen," an elegy for her late manager. But another death-a friend's suicide-drives her into angry rocker mode on "Seeing Black," one of three cuts endowed with Elvis Costello on electric guitar.

Courtney Love on Dave Grohl: "As for that drummer, well, he's hit on me so many times. He's just a very very conflicted guy about me, which is why he continually writes songs about me to hear he ‘hates' me more than ‘anyone else.' Kurt loathed HIM more than anyone else (except a journalist) … He's just sub-mediocre kind of guy who does this ‘nice guy' nonsense."
Dave Grohl on Courtney Love: "She's an ugly fucking bitch."

Courtney 1 Dave 0 on this one

I love the MES on Mumford one but I think ILM has enough Fall fans to cover that one.

the paul weller to freddie mercury one doesn't seem right to me. i seem to remember the story going that freddie mercury said in an interview with nme, which totally slated him, that he wanted to bring ballet to the masses. queen and the sex pistols were shortly afterwards recording in the same studio, sid vicious popped his head in and said "oy, freddie. you still bringing ballet to the masses" or something like that.

you've got male (jim in glasgow), Friday, 16 September 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

"Queen and The Sex Pistols were recording albums in London's West End when Sid Vicious wandered into the wrong studio to find Mercury alone at the piano. 'Ah, Freddie Mercury, still bringing ballet to the massses are you?' hissed Vicious. 'Oh yes, Mr Ferocious, dear,' Mercury bit back. 'We are doing our best.'

this is totally made up

i seem to remember seeing it on a documentary about queen that i was half watching a month or so ago round at a friend's bit, will drinking a lot of booze. in this version of the story freddie wasn't alone.

you've got male (jim in glasgow), Friday, 16 September 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

maybe it's on tape -- they were in a recording studio

(i don't really believe it either: you see it routinely in queen and mercury biogs, but that doesn't make it true)

mark s, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

"will drinking a lot of booze".

i am consistently illiterate on ilx.

Yeah, it doesn't ring true does it. The actual quote from NME about bringing ballet to the masses is however verifiable.

I remember reading this article a while back, lolling and the quotes, and then seeing no. 1 was such out of place. for me, it's either Gallagher on Kaiser Chiefs, or MES on M&S. Grohl on Love looks hilarious too, but only in context of the Courtney's comment that preceedes it.

btw - isn't this thread more ILM than ILE? jus' sayin'

When Wayne Coyne said everyone he'd met in showbiz was pretty cool, except for Richard Ashcroft who was a massive dick, I thought ok, Wyane Coyne is a super nice guy and Richard Ashcroft is obviously a massive dick. When he said Arcade Fire were pricks I thought that was unexpected, but he's a super nice guy so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If I hear him mouth off about one more rock star though...
