i seem to remember seeing it on a documentary about queen that i was half watching a month or so ago round at a friend's bit, will drinking a lot of booze. in this version of the story freddie wasn't alone.

maybe it's on tape -- they were in a recording studio

(i don't really believe it either: you see it routinely in queen and mercury biogs, but that doesn't make it true)

"will drinking a lot of booze".

i am consistently illiterate on ilx.

Yeah, it doesn't ring true does it. The actual quote from NME about bringing ballet to the masses is however verifiable.

yeah it just seems really apocryphal, the details (time, place, phrasing) change constantly in various retellings

"hippies are so full of shit" is an eternal truth nuke

I remember reading this article a while back, lolling and the quotes, and then seeing no. 1 was such out of place. for me, it's either Gallagher on Kaiser Chiefs, or MES on M&S. Grohl on Love looks hilarious too, but only in context of the Courtney's comment that preceedes it.

btw - isn't this thread more ILM than ILE? jus' sayin'

V79, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

Gallagher on Kaiser Chiefs may as well be Kaiser Chiefs on Gallagher

conrad, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda hope that Robert Smith quote about Morrissey doesn't get lost in the shuffle ... it's a nice targeted bit of contempt that's on target without being puerile or vulgar.

One horrible but very harsh one that's missing is Courtney Love's quote when Kurt Cobain went into a coma in Rome: "Why couldn't it have been Eddie Vedder?"

lol that just makes me think of Dead Rock'n'Rollers by Detention the whole lyrics of which might as well be in this poll

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 16 September 2011 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

i can't bear the thought of the adulation for a dead/martyred Eddie Vedder esp. since i can barely stand the adulation that constipated yak gets while he's still alive.

soul ma cosa nostra (Eisbaer), Friday, 16 September 2011 23:54 (twelve years ago) link

quote about costello is one of music's classic truth bombs, but voting for

"People talk about Eric Clapton. What has he ever done except throw his baby off a fuckin' ledge and write a song about it?"

I mean...

iatee, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that's just mean and defamatory ... and i don't even like eric clapton or his music.

soul ma cosa nostra (Eisbaer), Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

that is totally the harshest line

still voted nick cave, tho, because it's truer

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

i only just saw the Nick Cave quote ... shit, it's a beauty.

soul ma cosa nostra (Eisbaer), Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

in Aguilera's defense, she said that back when Gaga was barely famous, and was arguably less known for her music and more for a) looking like Christina and b) being speculated to have really been a dude

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

nonetheless, flea loves him some Nick Cave so no hard feelings (or they haven't heard what Mr. Cave said about their music).

RIP NME

that's kind of tragic, RHCP as the puppy looking up at Cave with nothing but love and admiration while he scowls down at them in disdain

what's more likely, that Flea actually said "rubbish" because he was talking to a British interviewer or that the interviewer misquoted Flea as saying "rubbish"

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

cave on rhcp ix good but i love the angie bowie line so that

I can attest that even if you are a person who would never in a million years use the word "rubbish" in conversation, if you talk to the English press they will occasionally claim that you said something was "a bit rubbish" and you will scratch your head when you run across it years later

were you in fact 'slagging' something or was it entirely invented

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 September 2011 02:41 (twelve years ago) link

I think what I'd said was that something "didn't really work for me" and I was quoted as saying it was "a bit rubbish" - same thing happened another time with "a bit crap, really!" which I laffed my ass off, I think we were all in the van together and I was like "guys guys here's this interview with me, stop me when you figure out why I'd wanna read it out loud"

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 17 September 2011 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

dude seriously you would have been apoplectic, we were riffing on it in the van for quite some time: "hey guys I said 'I have to admit the other side has a point' and it came out 'fair play to them then at the end of the day'"

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 17 September 2011 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

crazy thing is i actually saw an RHCP interview on TV recently where i vaguely Flea said something that struck me as more highfalutin and possibly anglicized than i would've expected from him, so i'm honestly not sure if he did say "rubbish"

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

Lou Reed on Zappa: "He's probably the single most untalented person I've heard in my life. He's a two-bit pretentious academic, and he can't play rock'n'roll, because he's a loser. And that's why he dresses up funny. He's not happy with himself, and I think he's right."
