yeah this has been my go to ugliest guitar of the year ever since the press release. between this and the multiple govt raids gibson is looking pretty hopeless imo.

which frankly is ok with me at this point, financial troubles for both them and fender might be the best thing to happen to the industry in a long time imo

Fender's having troubles too? Fine by me.

Possibly something to do with the image I linked to upthread? Maybe a mod could remove it.

So I'm sure there's a dedicated thread for this, but is there such a thing as too many guitars? I'm strictly an amateur, but like any guitarist the accumulation instinct is pretty great, especially when you could get a find electric - a MIM Strat, say - for just a couple of hundred bucks. Yet of course, I can only play one at a time, so at a certain point it feels like collecting for the sake of collecting, even though every guitar plays/feels/sounds distinct. But it's so tempting to add to the (small) stack...

Related question that may also be answerable on another thread: is it better to spend less on a MIM Fender and spend the balance on upgrading pick-ups/electronics to something even better than American stock, or spend more from the start on a MIA Fender? My instincts have always pointed me to the former, considering short of fancy pants custom shop stuff I imagine most Fenders are made the same way, but some people may have a real preference for the MIM vs. MIA.

too many guitars?

I got rid of a couple recently, but it's hard to fight that need to buy gear. Not just guitars but pedals, amps, etc.. I try and keep it in check by making sure that a) everything I have I actually use, and b) selling stuff that's redundant (dual humbucker guitar when I already have one, single coil guitar when the main guitar I use already does the same things but better).

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

I can't answer the second question directly, because I've never bought a new Fender. But as someone who has spent a lot of time messing around with different pickups and wiring harnesses, I will say this - you can end up spending more time tinkering with the electronics than you spend actually playing the guitar! It's a rabbit hole that you can fall into, and it goes down a long long way. If that's your thing then great (it is mine, although not to the extent it was a few years ago), but putting down more money upfront for a guitar that already has what you want out of the box might be a better use of time/money compared to upgrading a less than stellar guitar.

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

Non-guitar example of a time/money trade-off: a couple of years ago I built a modular synth. It cost £200 in parts, but it took 200 hours of my time. Charging myself £5/hr (less than UK minimum wage), that's £1000, plus the parts cost = £1200. I'm happy with the result, but £1200 can buy a lot of synth gear.

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

i solve this problem by not having any extra money and also feeling extremely guilty about spending money on nonessential items for myself.

The mum strata have necks and bodies that are made in the us, but there is a key difference in that the us strats are 3 piece bodies and the mim ones are 5-7 pieces with a cap.

American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'll put a good G&L up against pretty much anything. like seriously anything. I own a '79 Les Paul KM and I play my ASAT more. just fucking fantastic guitars imo

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

I sort of wish Fender hadn't released so many variants on the same type models, it'd be a lot easier to distinguish them all. Made in Mexico, Made in Mexico but with better components/electronics, Made in USA, Made in USA but not as good as the "better" MIA, MIA and good but not as well made as the really good MIA. And so on ... I can imagine a Tele-styled G&L is pretty great. Teles are the perfect slab-of-wood design. The Strat ones, I've heard weirdly divergent opinions. Everyone thinks they're very well made guitars, with better quality control than Fender, but some insist they play better, some the same, some worse. That's the prob with being a novice: my hands and ears are not good enough to A/B a dozen guitars and come to a sound decision. Hell, I have a pro musician friend that once had the chance to get a custom made guitar from a top maker at a good price, but couldn't bite the bullet because he's not picky/specific about all the myriad types of wood, wiring, shapes, etc. .

Idk, I am not a huge fan of single p90 guitars as main instruments - and I say that as a dude with a deep love of simplicity in instrument design. Theres just something kind of magical about neck p90 tone, and it's also nice to have the option of hum canceling in at least one position.

in the future everyone will be playing a soloette except in the privacy of their own home

An Outcast From Time's Feast (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 October 2011 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

wood is an issue, but mainly i am talking about the fact that the insanely low cost of production in china/indonesia is going to end, and that the attempts to build guitars in even more desperately poor countries (vietnam/india) have been abject failures (mostly climate related actually, its hard to dry wood in somewhere as humid as vietnam). the new rumbling is that the next step would be to try and build guitars in sub-saharan africa somewhere because basically the world is running out of people that will work for nearly no wages.

also i would respond to this thread more if it didnt keep being timestamp fuxxored :(

I'm amazed at the number of $4000+ guitars that don't seem designed just for aging Boomers who want to relive arena rock's heyday.

They're cool looking and no shade at the builders who can get that much, but I can't figure out who's buying them.

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Saturday, 10 June 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

(Well, the first would be cool looking without the artificial damage.)

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Saturday, 10 June 2017 21:56 (six years ago) link

Yeah if the damage is artificial, no thanks. And is the "wrong" side pickguard meant to look like it was modified from / to being lefty? I don't mind guitars that look weird and a bit wrong but intentional wrongness is not endearing.

The second one is rather pretty.

bleethal weapon (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 12 June 2017 13:00 (six years ago) link

Given what dudes will pay for a nice vintage Gibson or Fender, some of these boutique instruments are good value for money. I've played Kauer and Ronin basses before --they are pretty terrific (although that distressed Ronin looks like some customer's bad ideas). Pros and collectors buy this stuff -- and more and more pros as big firm guitar marketing begins to fall apart. If your choice is $8,000 for a vintage Gibson or a custom made instrument for $5,000, your choice isn't all that hard. It's the boutique instruments that go north of $7,000 or so that I wonder about (and that you almost never see on stages).

There was an Ibanez or Jackson something or other with a pointy headstock and a Floyd Rose and a 15" fingerboard radius for like $150 on Craigslist that I thought pretty hard about. If I wasn't moving soon I might have gone for it

space chipmunk (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

I still love the Ibanez RGs.

I ordered an offset Duo-Sonic at the back end of last month and the dealer thought it might take three or four days to come in. Over the course of the last five weeks, they haven't received a single Fender guitar or accessory. There's a new EU restriction in place on the import of rosewood - it was announced mid-2016 and brought into effect in February this year. From the sound of it, Fender haven't got their act together to confirm their CITES license so can't import anything with a rosewood board to Europe. They have kept shipping them though - so everything is getting seized by Customs - including non-rosewood guitars / accessories in the same packages.

Other companies seem to be in the same situation - so there are tens of thousands of guitars held at the UK border with no suggestion of when they might ever be released.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 11:49 (six years ago) link

I've just seen that Fender will now manufacture most of their guitars with pau ferro rather than rosewood - so goodness knows when they might be ready.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 11:53 (six years ago) link

Of course, having finished typing, i got a call that it had arrived.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 12:13 (six years ago) link

Yeah, the CITES thing is global. The stores that were sending used Japanese Fender and Gibson copies to the American market got stuck for quite a while unable to ship.
