acoustic ragas - s/d

there are actually some proper ragas by indian musicians played on slide guitar out there, though artist names are eluding me right now.

I mean, it only defines the genre.

And it's not acoustic - it's most emphatically electric - but anyone who cares about raga/rock mergers or modal improvisation in general must pick up the Paul Butterfield Blues Band East West Live cd on the Winner label. Like right fucking now!!!

and YNF, when you were talking about Indian musicians playing slide guitar ragas, were you talking about Brig Bhushan Kabra? i've heard about him, but never heard any of the music.

On the other hand, Pelt's "Pearls From the River" is all acoustic and very raga-influenced. And Jack Rose's (from Pelt) latest cd has many solo guitar pieces inna raga style, listen especially to "Yaman Blues."

About ten minutes into this I came to the conclusion that I had to buy one. This is awesome. Any Fahey fan will freak out watching this dvd. The 1996 material by itself is great -- a concert at Berkeley's Freight and Salvage that maybe some of you reading this were lucky enough to attend, plus backstage interview footage wherein ol' John Fahey reveals both some of his history, and his humor. But it was the 1969 portion of this I watched first, which consists of a much more youthful, clean-shaven John Fahey guesting on some sort of guitar-oriented TV talk show, hosted by a woman who is clearly both a big fan of Fahey's playing and also somewhat bemused/confused by his musical eccentricities. She even almost scolds him for doing something that she tells her own guitar students not to do, though they determine that he had a good reason for it... Fahey proves himself to be quite a charming character, smoking a cigarette as he answers the host's questions and demonstrates his techniques, playing quite a few lovely lovely songs. It's amazing viewing for anyone already under the spell of the man's music and persona. Fans, get this!

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt plays mostly trad ragas on a slide guitar-like instrument, i think of his own design.

i don't think so. there are a few on CD, though thoae may be out of print now.

picked this up (along with other 'get on down' stuff), and its spot on.
loving the replica gatefold packaging with the inner sleeve for the cd.
as for the music, well its a mixed bag most of it excellent, however, this is the best track :

You guys should listen to the new Central Living (Steve Gunn) album on Blackest Rainbow. Great colab with some other dude I've never heard of. Its pretty great. I should post this in the rolling drone thread as well
