robbie basho's collection CD ("guitar soli") is a damn good place to start; i don't know if that's the one you have, but by all means get it. i love the HELL out of that peter walker album. the seventh sons "4am at frank's" is pretty nice if more bouncy than those releases.

there are actually some proper ragas by indian musicians played on slide guitar out there, though artist names are eluding me right now.

Jesus Christ, no mention of the Seventh Sons record on ESP on this thread?!

I mean, it only defines the genre.

And it's not acoustic - it's most emphatically electric - but anyone who cares about raga/rock mergers or modal improvisation in general must pick up the Paul Butterfield Blues Band East West Live cd on the Winner label. Like right fucking now!!!

For whatever reason I missed your note about the Seventh Sons thing; m apologies.

sir richard bishop's "salvador kali" disc on revenant worth checking fo r a couple of pieces he also does mancini & django & dick dale on there in his slightly askew way

bob snoom, Sunday, 6 July 2003 10:18 (twenty years ago) link

since i first posted to this thread, i've actually fallen in love with Basho. his singing is what really sets him apart for me from other folky pickers (fahey, kotke, etc). i've heard a lot of people complain about his voice, but i think it's amazing.

and YNF, when you were talking about Indian musicians playing slide guitar ragas, were you talking about Brig Bhushan Kabra? i've heard about him, but never heard any of the music.

John Fahey's "Fare Forward Voyagers" from his album of the same name is most excellent, as is the entire LP. Maybe not strictly a raga, but it's dedicated to his guru Swami Satchidananda and lasts a full 24 minutes, so I'm sure it counts. He also recorded something titled "A Raga Called Pat" but I've never heard that.

locust just re-released this gene estribou + john-paul pickens split _intensifications_ which has some passages that hover around ragas [the disc is all very good]. they're both bay area fixtures (estribou recorded grateful dead; pickens was in serpent power)

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 30 May 2004 17:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll start off by saying Fahey's FFV album does not count as raga, despite the a dedicado and length (girth?) of the music. Never understood the draw of this album, one of his lesser ones imo, but another topic altogether. Skip it, I'd say.

On the other hand, Pelt's "Pearls From the River" is all acoustic and very raga-influenced. And Jack Rose's (from Pelt) latest cd has many solo guitar pieces inna raga style, listen especially to "Yaman Blues."

Blind J.D., Monday, 31 May 2004 15:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Saw Jack rose: he started playing an acoustic raga but then went off and played a acoustic feedback piece then some blues and some fahey like stuff. bah not enough faith in drone music.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 07:35 (nineteen years ago) link

There are several tunes spread across various Six Organs of Admittance releases that would qualify as very raga-esque guitar improv.

also there's the Contemporary Guitar Sampler put out on Takoma Records in the late 60's, which has not only Fahey and Basho, but a piece by Max Ochs called 'Raga.' good luck finding it though, it's rare/out of print.

Pandit Barunkumar Pal - thanks for posting! I'm very interested in hearing your recordings of the Hansa Veena.

i just got the fahey dvd on rounder:

http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&catalog_id=5157

aquarius records of san francisco says:

FAHEY, JOHN In Concert and Interviews 1969 & 1996 (Vestapol / Rounder) dvd 22.00
About ten minutes into this I came to the conclusion that I had to buy one. This is awesome. Any Fahey fan will freak out watching this dvd. The 1996 material by itself is great -- a concert at Berkeley's Freight and Salvage that maybe some of you reading this were lucky enough to attend, plus backstage interview footage wherein ol' John Fahey reveals both some of his history, and his humor. But it was the 1969 portion of this I watched first, which consists of a much more youthful, clean-shaven John Fahey guesting on some sort of guitar-oriented TV talk show, hosted by a woman who is clearly both a big fan of Fahey's playing and also somewhat bemused/confused by his musical eccentricities. She even almost scolds him for doing something that she tells her own guitar students not to do, though they determine that he had a good reason for it... Fahey proves himself to be quite a charming character, smoking a cigarette as he answers the host's questions and demonstrates his techniques, playing quite a few lovely lovely songs. It's amazing viewing for anyone already under the spell of the man's music and persona. Fans, get this!

loving the replica gatefold packaging with the inner sleeve for the cd.
as for the music, well its a mixed bag most of it excellent, however, this is the best track :
