He had a sort of 'serious' singersongwriter career alongside his "wombles" stuff, but that was kicked out by him doing "Summertime City" for some BBC variety show. Seaside special, that was it.
Followed up with "Get a little sand between your toes" which was more of the same but less....
And so he go soh resentful that to get his revenge he got a girl singer and foisted some awful songs on her. 9 million bikes indeed.

Anyway, the answer to "Why" is that his "Agreement" with KMel ends with the most recent album. So, both are now 'solo' entities.
