Shame this didn't wait a few months, be interesting to see how Super Mario Galaxy would have done. I think it wipes the floor with any of these that I've played (SMB, NSMB, 64, Sunshine - and also two of the RPGs, but they're not really that comparable).

i like the glowing text effect on that gif, Tracer

I've come to this thread too late to give SM64 the joint win that it deserved!― JimD, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:15 (1 year ago)
agree with this, and also what andrew just said wrt wondering how Galaxy would have placed.
not a single vote for super mario land??!

To rate SMG higher than any of the classic 2d efforts is crazy talk in my house. I like that game, but c'mon - it has several big flaws... mainly jumping on things head in 3d is still awkward and shooting star bits at things is just pretty unfun. Could also live without most of the story bits.

I really really like the 3d jumping, actually. I was struck by how intuitive the controls are under all circumstances, and they do pretty much test all circumstances. But I know some people don't find it so, it's just how I'm used to (I started platforming on the PS, with Crash and Spyro, and I think moved on to Ratchet and Jak before ever trying SM64). And there's lots of effectively 2d sections with stuff you couldn't do before - circular worlds, or shifting gravity.
Shooting star bits at the screen's not wildly fun, but you have to do it for maybe a minute total in the whole game. The story is... well, the story is present in any sense, which you're right isn't great. But again (apart from the start) it's maybe ten minutes total.

I love Galaxy, and would easily rate it above 64 and Sunshine (and, er, the Virtual Boy Mario) as the best 3D Mario. That said, there are at least 4 2D Mario games that near perfection.

I've somehow never played that game. feel that anecdotally it didn't sell that well, in the uk at least, in comparison with super mario world

I think it made a decent number of people upset, it was called Super Mario World 2 but it wasn't really "Super Mario World 2"
for the record that was probably the one game to genuinely freak me out as a kid, not just because of how surreal and psychedelic everything was but also because losing baby Mario was legitimately a panic-inducing thing
(in retrospect that game is pretty messed up!!!)

I've been replaying mario 3 as I'm staying with a buddy right now and he has an ok little collection of genesis, snes and nes games and a weird janky system that plays all three. had legitimately forgotten how tough some of the levels in mario 3 are. i do really well in the first 4 or 5 worlds, hardly dying at all. then i do a trusty trick where on world 6 or 7 there's a fortress which you can farm for coins and so i usually arrive there with like 40 lives then bring myself up to the maximum 99. then on worlds 7 and 8 i just die like crazy and am incredibly thankful for the buffer of lives.
i really want to play super mario world again. i am fairly confident i prefer the gameplay of 3, but i loved the aesthetics of mario world, as in the map, the characters, plus the addition of the cape flying mechanism and yoshi.
