Truw, but Orange-Pineapple Juice from Ressurection is incredble/incredbly slept on.

"btw his new album blows"

his new album is a white girl.

blahbariantheorig, Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:27 (eighteen years ago) link

If you cant really love your own, how can you really love others?

Uh, right. I forgot that white people are a different species than black people.

Vestigial Appendages, Esq. (King Kobra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:27 (eighteen years ago) link

whats so bad about what he says? hes just saying that he has a loyalty to black women, doesnt DISAGREE with mixed race dating, that he likes to shag white girls, just not do anything more with them, and that he wants to stick by black women. and hes saying that people who dont date people from their own race have some issues and maybe dont like their own race very much (which is arguable though, it might just be preference). but hes being a bit of a cock by saying that he only regards white chix as fuck-holes and nothing more. but thats common, hes never approved of mixed race dating. hes a hypocrite though cos he obv wants to fuck them. if he was that against going outside his race, he wouldnt even do that.

blahbariantheoriginal, Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

but thats common

haha! This should be the title of his sit-com!

If you ask me, people who ONLY date from their own race also have issues.

Vestigial Appendages, Esq. (King Kobra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

why, maybe its just preference. or maybe its cultural, there ARE certain things that you can only get from people of the same race/background.

blahbariantheoriginal, Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Moving on...

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah "he doesn't approve of mixed-race dating" if that's the case = he is a narrow minded dimwit

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

'If you ask me, people who ONLY date from their own race also have issues' - right, because everyone is from a cosmopolitan urban area and also has consummate social skills, so there's no excuse not to. Vestigial, please fuck youself.

morethanhuman, Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

No need for cursing, "morethanhuman." All I'm saying is that anyone who has made up their minds about an entire group of people (AKA making huge blanket statements about their ability/inability to please you emotionally) has a mental block. It seems awfully closeminded to say that you would NEVER date someone outside of your race. What healthy or compelling reason is there to say that with finality? I'm not saying that it's wrong for people to date within their own race, and in fact, there may be very good reasons to-- but to decide beforehand to close yourself to "outside" races seems pretty goddamn shallow. Sorry if you disagree.

Vestigial Appendages, Esq. (King Kobra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

it seems like he's thought this through and has reasons for having this stance other than "i hate white people". you may disagree with both stance and the reasons for it, but that's no reason to call him names.
i'm pretty sure malcolm x felt the same way (not to mention millions of others). do you think he's a narrow minded dimwit? (not rhetorical)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Again, I can see why someone can have a compelling reason to date within their own race, but I can't see why someone would say with certainty they would NEVER date outside of it.

Vestigial Appendages, Esq. (King Kobra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:09 (eighteen years ago) link

so you can't see why malcolm x would've said with certainty he would never date outside his race?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

that's funny, i didn't see common use the word NEVER in big capitals back there.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:15 (eighteen years ago) link

i didn't see the thread title in the interview, either

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:15 (eighteen years ago) link

"malcolm x would've said with certainty he would never date outside his race"

I don't think post-pilgrimage Malcolm X would've endorsed that idea, actually.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i was wondering that, but who are we to say? point is at one time he most definitely thought that way, had very well-thought out reasons for it, and was not a narrow-minded dimwit.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

or was he?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Malcolm X himself would've admitted he was being a narrow-minded dimwit when he was younger, more stridently separatist days - and that goes for more than this particular example.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:22 (eighteen years ago) link

wanting to date within his race does not seem like it in no way could fit in with his post-pilgrimage outlook. there needn't be any "white people are devils" thinking behind it.
anyway this is all besides the point, really.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

speaking as a not-white person, i can see common's pt 100%, as it applies to my own life. so does that make me a racist?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

no just un PC. you will not be invited to any parties thrown by urbane young white people. sorry.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I know what he's talking about but there's some of the best scratching I've heard in a long while on his single.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I *don't* know... that should say.

Oops, buy a ladder and get over it.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

do you disagree with what i've said? perhaps you could formulate at least a smidgen of an argument rather than slinging vague putdowns as per usual.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

You have this hobby horse about being un-pc...it's kind of irrelevant. What does not being invited to "parties thrown by urbane young white people" have to do with the topic?

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe it's because everyone is so obsessed with being inoffensive and PC?
it was a joke. think you can, just for a moment, not be the most negative person on the planet?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, bring on another 10 million comments about what a renegade you are.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

the only one talking about me is you. can one not criticize something they feel is a misguided, far-reaching societal obsession without you thinking they're patting themselves on the back for being a rebel?
so...back to common...

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Forget renegade comments, am I the only one that thinks Common has really nice taste in various hats, i've seen him in more than one and thought "Damn, that's a nice hat!"

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

He does have nice hats, that is a good point.

Better taste in hats: Common or Mos Def?

http://www.mtv.com/shared/media/news/images/m/Mos_Def/sq-mos-hat-mtv.jpg

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:00 (eighteen years ago) link

They've kinda got whole different styles. Common leans towards the crazy hippy fuzzy hats, Mos is more of a cowboy hat/beret/hat-genre-ist.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Now you're onto something! Mos Def favours more wacky hats, whereas Common likes ones that actually would keep your head warm if the weather suddenly turned sour. I would like to see some more pictures of these two wearing hats, please.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

It's sort of like Jamiroqaui vs. Indiana Jones.

Common's hats - wacky AND functional

Mos Def - style/class trumps hat functionality

Mos Def looks quite the man about town. Still liking Common more on the hat front though, although when it comes to lyrics, I tip my hat (to keep with the theme) in Mos' direction.

it's just that the last time I saw this ridiculous amount of fawning was 9/12/01, when everyone suddenly talked about George Bush like he was God incarnate.

I mean seriously, look at this 400 page search result of people kissing this guy's ass: here

res I know this'll blow your mind but most of the time the reason people are "fawning" is because the shit n. brings is right the fuck on. if you think you can actually find instances where he's dead wrong and people are all "fuckin' nabisco otm!" then go nuts but you and I both know you can't do that at all, all you got is useless hater juice.
