"hophop", that is quite pathetic. That list also looks like its five three years old minus fallout boy.

And post the results. Please.

I definitely think RISD is winning. Most importantly is the ranking of Arrested Development. The higher the ranking the awesomer the school.

Stephen C (ihope), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:34 (eighteen years ago) link

WTF how come all the schools seem to have exactly the same list for bands? I almost thought, at one point, that I'd been reading the same list over and over and over and ov... Is it compulsory to listen to DMB and The Killer et al. when entering when of these places???

Jibé (Jibé), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Ya, I'm really dissapointed at how big jambandish music is at college.

Stephen C (ihope), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks Don! I don't have a college email address so I can't even make an account.

I thought for sure that some of those smaller liberal arts type schools (American, Emerson) would be at least SOMEWHAT different.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I am seriously weirded out. Someone earlier posted their list as:

1. DMB
2. Coldplay
3. Jack Johnson
4. The Beatles
5. U2
6. Counting Crows
7. Ben Folds
8. The Killers
9. Green Day
10. Led Zeppelin
-- PB (non...), December 20th, 2005.

My school (which is Wayne State, in the middle of Detroit) had almost the exact same list:

1. DMB
2. Coldplay
3. Jack Johnson
4. The Beatles
5. Green Day
6. R&B
7. Rap
8. The Killers -1
9. Led Zeppelin -1
10. Country

I think this says more about facebook users than members of said schools. Trust me.

______, Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

If you want more varied results, check out the historically black schools:

Howard:
1. R&B
2. Hip Hop
3. Rap
4. Reggae -1
5. Gospel -1
6. Jazz -1
7. Jay-Z -1
8. Kanye West -1
9. John Legend -1
10. Common -1

Spelman
1. R&B
2. Hip Hop
3. Gospel
4. Rap
5. John Legend -1
6. Jazz -1
7. Reggae -1
8. Kanye West -1
9. Jay-Z -1
10. Neo-Soul -1

Alabama State
1. R&B
2. Rap
3. Gospel -1
4. Hip Hop -1
5. Jazz -1
6. Rap and R&B
7. T.I. -2
8. Jay-Z -2
9. Kanye West +1
10. Neo-Soul -1

Morehouse
1. R&B
2. Rap
3. Hip Hop -1
4. Jazz -1
5. Jay-Z -1
6. Gospel -1
7. T.I. -1
8. Kanye West -1
9. Nas -1
10. Common

And by varied, I mean "exactly the same but at least no DMB/Coldplay/Jack Johnson!"

musically (musically), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I think this thread should turn into "if you think your school is so lame, then post _your_ favorite groups on Facebook".

musically (musically), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Why do middle-to-upper class college kids still listen to Counting Crows and DMB? Didn't their popular peak occur in like 1997, when most of these kids were in grade school? Don't music tastes evolve? Especially since those bands suck?

PB, Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:43 (eighteen years ago) link

one year passes...

In retrospect, I think the funniest thing about Facebook was getting a crush on some girl or another in one of my classes, then tracking said girl down on Facebook and being all excited, only to instantly lose interest at the sight of something like this:

------
Favorite Music:
The Fray, Dave Barnes, Dierks Bentley, Snow Patrol, Michael Buble, Hellogoodbye, Honestly, Five For Fighting, John Mayer, Lifehouse, Matt Wertz, Damien Rice, Stephen Speaks, James Blunt, Keith Urban, Jason Mraz, Tim McGraw, Jack Johnson, Cold play, Switchfoot, Gavin Degraw, Maroon 5
------

And I mean, that's just a generic example. This has probably happened to me dozens of times in my college years. I eventually gave up on girls I dated having good taste in music.

:(

ILM's current favourite bands don't make the list because typical mainstream singles list acts of 2009 are mainly popular with kids who have yet to join Facebook because they are too young. :)

Facebook's algorithms remind me of a well-meaning but obnoxious co-worker who keeps butting into conversations.

"Hey, guys, you hear about what the Red Hot Chili Peppers did now?"
"Facebook, why do you think any of us care about what the Red Hot Chili Peppers did now?"
"Lots of people are talking about them."
"Are we talking about them? Do we ever talk about them?"
"I mean. You guys like music, right?"
"That wasn't the question."
"OK, I'll come clean. You seem to be talking about lighting Nazis on fire an awful lot lately, and I thought you could use something to take your mind off things."
"So you're suggesting we light Chad Smith on fire? I mean. It's not the stupidest thing you've ever suggested."
"Oh, no, I didn't mean..." (face turns beet red, runs away)
