Some of it's quiet, but some is really huge. All good.

There are these moments where it sounds like he's just SLASHING across the keys on the loudest registration available, out of tempo. It's brutal. Beautiful.

There are a ton of French organ composers who have written massive, imposing works: Messian, Massenet, and Langlais come to mind initially.

whoa, i had no idea massenet wrote organ music. some others are Tournemire, Widor, DuprE, Vierne, Jehan Alain and DuruflE-- but no one is biggers or scarier than Messiaen.

Also, if you live near any actual churches that have big fuck-off organs, I would suggest attending a service or, if possible, a concert - because no stereo can really recreate the pew-shaking bass and presence of a real, big-ass pipe organ.

Keith Jarrett - Hymns/Spheres (1976)

improvisations recorded on a 18th century pipe organ of the Ottobeuren Abbey, a Benedictine abbey in Germany. microtonal effects acheived through careful movement of the stops.

the CD contains only the calmer sections, you want the 2 LP vinyl. pretty demonic.

the first piece of Messiaen's for organ that I got completely into was La Nativité du Seigneur, it's got the riffs

I got into Jacula recently and they are a dream come true for me, they turned into Antonius Rex and i have yet to listen to those. They are still bringing out new albums.

one year passes...

Expanding my horizons here...I grew up with an organ in the house but until recently my taste has been limited to jazz, rhythm and blues and movie soundtracks.

How is that Popul Vuh album? It's not my "thing" but looks enticing.

seven years pass...
