i didn't see the snl, but stevie, she's really gifted and funny! one day melissa mccarthy will get to do something where the writers completely resist fat jokes. (no fat jokes about her on the gilmore girls as far as i can remember, but she didn't get the opportunity to be as funny as she can be on that show, either.)

I seriously didn't think the ranch dressing joke was about her being fat! It was about her desperation for the 50 bucks, and I quite liked that skit.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

idk i thought the office sketch was all "LOL the sexuality of a fat person"

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

That joke wasn't *about* that, but it turned into "lol u fat" when they had her chug the bottle.

See I totally disagree, I thought that was "LOL the sexuality of awkward people with no social cues".

i agree p much, but i'm not sure if nasim pedrad would've been called upon to guzzle a whole bottle of ranch dressing

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

u might be right xp

I didn't watch the episode but some of this is the double-edged sword of her success coming via "Mike and Molly", isn't it?* Because of the environment created by that show, it's difficult not to see her comedy through that prism; one of the thing that impressed me so much about her "Bridesmaids" character was how little the script relied on her size to generate comedy. In the context of television, her most successful starring turn is on a "lol @ fat ppl" show and I think that's going to influence how people read/react to her sketches.

* there is also a fundamental "lol @ fat ppl" foundation in our society that is likely never going away; I am ignoring this for rhetorical purposes but I recognize that it comprises say 85% of how ppl will view anything she does

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

That was the sole moment on the show where I thought they made the "lol fat people" connection. The opening, the monologue, the office sketch, the closing bar sketch...everything else was personality-driven. It was only the Hidden Valley sketch where I think they went all "fatty's gotta eat".

I'd agree with that, she was one of the funniest hosts SNL has had in a while.

STEFON!

Immediately ruined by Ben Stiller playing Derek Zoolander and being too old and unfunny to do it properly.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 October 2011 04:29 (twelve years ago) link

it was a totally normal stefon sketch exactly like all the others, with a different ending. you could pause it before zoolander (which i had no problem with) and voila, no 'ruining'.

Whoa, holy "Electric Feel" ripoff.

last weeks 'whats wrong with tanya' sketch rewards repeated viewings.

, Thursday, 20 October 2011 09:54 (twelve years ago) link

that was...ok. Mostly I thought it was the worst episode since January Jones. Except for the skit where Paul Brittain played the boyish fop boyfriend. That totally killed me.

Can anyone find the ancient (early 80s) "Qaddafi Jeans" commercial??

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

I quite like Anna Paris hosting SNL. The singing boat ride sketch she did with Keenan last time is one of my favorite skits in recent memory. The "Tell Him" sketch this past week was in a similar mold.

Charlie Day hosting should be a good show.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:56 (twelve years ago) link

"tell him" and "what's wrong with tanya" were both pretty awesome imo

some dude, Friday, 21 October 2011 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

i could watch a whole episode of 2011 snl that's just prerecorded bits of impersonations/rapid fire parodies

Seinfeld apartment sketch was great. Charlie Day is the way, the truth and the light imo.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 November 2011 05:06 (twelve years ago) link

this was by far the best ep this season

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 November 2011 05:09 (twelve years ago) link

Great show, Charlie is pretty natural at sketch comedy. Was it just my TV or did the crowd seem twice as loud as the actors?

oh god this has been terrible so far. Emma Stone ;_;

encarta it (Gukbe), Sunday, 13 November 2011 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

At least we had Chris Martin's dancing to laugh at.

lindseykai, Sunday, 13 November 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

I get the impression that whenever they pull out the recurring sketches, they're out of ideas. Stone was great in the Bridal Shower sketch, but it wasn't good. Adele one barely written but kind of amusing.

I was cracking the fuck up at the Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial but then I realized it was an actual commercial and not a sketch
