man so the iphone 4 is $550 without a contract - iphone 4s gonna be $750?

4S 500 uk fun bucks without contract

that'll sting a bit but can't live with this HTC desire much longer

cozen, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

64gb one is probably gonna break £700, Jesus. My first mac was less.

stet, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

my first iphone was a 3gs - already familiar with warmed up leftovers, not gonna be tricked this time!! new design so people know my ~with-it-ness~ or else

(╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

wtf are you talking about, the 3gs is great!

I am on the two year 3gs->4s rotation and am fine with that. I never felt particularly left out when I read what the 4 had, but it's definitely time for an upgrade.

The people who have a 4 and are whining that the 4s isn't worth an upgrade are... masochists?

Just get a 4?

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

btw I have no inclination whatsoever to replace my 4 with one of these things (unless iOS 5 slows it down to a crawl)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

in the USA w/ an unlocked iPhone, are there carriers with which you can get the barest minimum of minutes, plus a decent normal-ish data plan?

Euler, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

the 4 is only £70 less and is only 8GB

suckers buy the 4

cozen, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

oh god that's appalling

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

Still sticking with mine, got it the first day it was out. The next version is probably the one I'll replace it with.

So, on a day of high expectation built up over about six months, and with huge annual precedents in the ipod range:

- same phone but slightly faster
- same ipods

Anyone willing to bet Apple's working on another new-category device? Or an Apple TV replacement to do for TV what itunes did for music, maybe?

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

what are you thinking of when you say "do for tv what itunes did for music"?

caek, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

Still have a 3G and was also hoping for an updated form factor (don't like the feel of the 4). My inner conspiracy theorist thinks they've purposefully made certain key apps (well, key for me) like Facebook and the Maps app run so slowly on the 3G (under iOS 4.2.1) that they're almost unusable. I'll likely go 4S but won't be happy about it. On the bright side iPhone 4 cases are dirt cheap and will work with the new one (I think). Wish there was a way to port iOS 5 to the Samsung Galaxy II S…

Bryan, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

feel like apple has been whiffing with updates since the iPad, everything since then have been minor updates. the ipad 2 felt like it came way too soon on the heels of the ipad.

(╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

that would have been true if the ipad 1 wasn't missing a camera

caek, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

although you're right, they probably weren't losing sales based on the limitations of the original ipad, given the lol competition

caek, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

well I'm just thinking of the 'golden era' - unibody macbooks, ipod nanos, macbook air, iphone 3G, iphone 4 with retina screen, ipad... it always seemed at least one product line was receiving a 'revolutionary' update per year (probably gonna be disproved if I ever look back at the timeline)

but it really seems they're treading water/getting complacent atm

but i think the slow speech is a very conscious attempt to control his nerves. presume that's the reason why they used a much smaller venue too.

joe, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

i think that has pretty much always been the default venue for non-WWDC/MacWorld announcements. a couple non-conference ones were done up in SF, but they are the exception. i think.

engadget making a strong case for the improvements of the 4gs

Engadget highlights the improved internal specs of the iPhone 4S, noting that everything "just feels zippier".

(╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

Every new thing ever made has felt zippier than the previous thing to everyone to ever use a thing.

I don't know dayo, I don't think they've done a revolutionary product since the iPhone, if you're going to be all debbie downer here.

Since Jobs got back: iMac, OS X, Mac Mini (yeah whatever), aluminum Powerbook, iBook, Macbook, unibody iMac, unibody MBP, Intel transition, iPod + iTunes, Music store, iPhone, App Store, MBA.

Really unless they come up with a "better" unibody design or something that isn't a tab/pad/laptop/desktop, there's not a ton of options. Apple TV could "mature" or they could move into a different form factor, but really the next steps are higher res screens, smaller-bodied devices, solid state/nvram and cloud storage for everything, and whatever else.

They're at a point now where carving out a new market segment is just as possible as it was, but it's not really transparent to many people. What are the devices people are using that seem to have some utility that Apple doesn't have? I imagine a future iPhone update will do NFC or adopt something like QR codes or fly or something.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

One way you can feel the increased zippiness of the new iphone right now is by picking up an ipad 2

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

Really everything else seems really lame. AMOLED, e-ink displays, and other shit will probably be a future, but not areas Apple has delved into for their own reasons.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

iPad 2 having a camera and that being a "thing" for anything other than facetime is such a joke btw.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

so apple's in the windows xp phase of its lifecycle!

(╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

ilx user 'silby' (silby), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

I have never once cracked open either of the cameras on my ipad fwiw

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

Even for OCR the back camera is just too weak to be of any use

um yeah that is because upgrading every generation is for mental people!

iOS 4 was a-ok on 3gs in my experience, iOS 5 may be pretty ok!

max, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

yeah if Apple makes a massive thermodynamic breakthrough in battery technology and gives us a laptop that can stream movies over the internet for three days without charging that would be revolutionary

but I feel like we are stuck with agonizing incremental progress on that front

ilx user 'silby' (silby), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:29 (twelve years ago) link

I will admit that increased battery life has made me consider upgrading

dunno if I can justify spending $400 on a phone tho

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

there was a patent filing by apple awhile back about integrating solar panels to their idevices... (ominous elipses!)

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

If it was just a phone and not a thing that I am constantly using every minute I'm not a computer...

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

i think that has pretty much always been the default venue for non-WWDC/MacWorld announcements.
The September new-iPods refresh has been Moscone for years, I think.

Am kinda surprised there isn't a new form factor. That's the only thing between 4s and calling it a 5.

But yeah, Apple's done virtually everything that's been on the rumour roadmap since abt 1997 now - including phone and tablet, which seemed like ludicrous dreams in 2003.

Only things left are a:) a TV, b) a proper Mac Dock, c) xMac (smaller Mac Pro) and of them only TV has industry-changing potential and they're sucking at it right now.

stet, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

Also the musty iOS look that's really starting to feel staid these days.

and of them only TV has industry-changing potential and they're sucking at it right now.

TV has enormous potential. Everyone's sitting on their arses doing bugger-all (except for US stuff like Hulu which isn't available everywhere) and moaning about torrents etc. I am convinced that Apple will move on this and that it will change television.

not sure if you've used an iPhone before or not, but calling it a phone is missing the point entirely. i'm always shocked at people balking at the price when you consider what the thing does and how small it is. in 2004/2005 if you had told me about a handheld computer/music player that did everything the iphone did at that price, I would have not believed it. i barely make phone calls, have had 3 diff. iPhones and it has been worth every penny. will gladly buy this new one.
