btw I have no inclination whatsoever to replace my 4 with one of these things (unless iOS 5 slows it down to a crawl)

OTM

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

um yeah that is because upgrading every generation is for mental people!

iOS 4 was a-ok on 3gs in my experience, iOS 5 may be pretty ok!

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

mental and/or ppl with way too much disposable income

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

I just upgraded to iOS 5 gold master version on an iPad (first version), I will report back. No, I'm not a developer, I'm just an impatient asshole.

phone/laptop with infinite battery life would be a game changer (just sayin...)

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

i have an iphone 3G, i am ready to upgrade

max, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

yeah if Apple makes a massive thermodynamic breakthrough in battery technology and gives us a laptop that can stream movies over the internet for three days without charging that would be revolutionary

but I feel like we are stuck with agonizing incremental progress on that front

ilx user 'silby' (silby), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:29 (twelve years ago) link

I will admit that increased battery life has made me consider upgrading

dunno if I can justify spending $400 on a phone tho

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

there was a patent filing by apple awhile back about integrating solar panels to their idevices... (ominous elipses!)

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

If it was just a phone and not a thing that I am constantly using every minute I'm not a computer...

i think that has pretty much always been the default venue for non-WWDC/MacWorld announcements.
The September new-iPods refresh has been Moscone for years, I think.

Am kinda surprised there isn't a new form factor. That's the only thing between 4s and calling it a 5.

But yeah, Apple's done virtually everything that's been on the rumour roadmap since abt 1997 now - including phone and tablet, which seemed like ludicrous dreams in 2003.

Only things left are a:) a TV, b) a proper Mac Dock, c) xMac (smaller Mac Pro) and of them only TV has industry-changing potential and they're sucking at it right now.

Also the musty iOS look that's really starting to feel staid these days.

TV has enormous potential. Everyone's sitting on their arses doing bugger-all (except for US stuff like Hulu which isn't available everywhere) and moaning about torrents etc. I am convinced that Apple will move on this and that it will change television.

not sure if you've used an iPhone before or not, but calling it a phone is missing the point entirely. i'm always shocked at people balking at the price when you consider what the thing does and how small it is. in 2004/2005 if you had told me about a handheld computer/music player that did everything the iphone did at that price, I would have not believed it. i barely make phone calls, have had 3 diff. iPhones and it has been worth every penny. will gladly buy this new one.

lol bld, I have had an iPhone for 4 years; iPhone 4 was the first one actually worth owning (the previous ones I had were free)

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

the 3g was a pile of shit imo

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

3gs was the shit, yo.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

bld i hear you but the idea of upgrading every year for $400 is what is ridiculous to me, not the $99 intro price or whatever i paid for my 3G. i only upgraded to 3GS because my 3G died.

^^^

I have a friend with far too much disposable income and a vicious "me first" impulse who has purchased upon initial release an original iPhone, a 3G, a 3GS, a 4, an iPad, an iPad 2, a Mac Book Pro and a Mac Book Air. I am certain he will be ordering a 4S at midnight on Friday.

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:31 (twelve years ago) link

So when are you putting the scheme into place to corrupt him into leaving you all his money before he mysteriously dies?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:35 (twelve years ago) link

"there will be an appropriate response"

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:35 (twelve years ago) link

upgrading every year never seemed defensible when you had to lock yourself into a brand new 2 year contract every time. now that they sell unlocked iphones, it's marginally more defensible.

Still odd unless you want to play bleeding-edge games or are sight-impaired

Just read a report on the iphone 4s that said "it's no iphone 5"

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

"this phone that's not called an 'iphone 5', it's nothing like a phone that doesn't exist"

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:49 (twelve years ago) link

dunno if it's iphone5 or the budget model but apple is definitely working on something with more psp-like screen dimensions, if that's the theoretical phone you'd rather have.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

why do i have to wait until oct. 14 to buy the cheaper iphone 4?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 01:08 (twelve years ago) link

i'm most pissed that the case producers always concentrate their best efforts on the *newest* model. like i got my ipad 1 less than a year ago and all i see now are accessories for ipad 2 ...

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 01:15 (twelve years ago) link

If they changed the screen size, they'd have to either have a lower number of pixels per inch, or seriously fuck with the app development landscape! I can't believe people were just like "oh yeah, larger screen, no brainer"

I dropped my iPhone 4 the other week, if I hadn't I wouldn't be upgrading.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 02:54 (twelve years ago) link

If you're prepared to sign a new two year contract every year you can generally sell your old phone for the price of the new one (worked fine for me in the US the last few years). Of course then you decide to move abroad and have to buy out your contract, and that's when it gets a little painful.

toby, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 05:27 (twelve years ago) link

to a lesser extent, that's the case with most Apple products - resale covers the Mac Tax if you're someone who upgrades constantly.

I sold a first-generation unibody Macbook (not pro) for $600 for my dad recently - good luck finding someone who'll pay $600 for a 3-year old 13" PC laptop.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 05:46 (twelve years ago) link

ja, i know plenty of people who upgrade every year. unless you're in a contract (which has been easy to avoid in a lot of countries since launch), it's no more expensive than upgrading less often, because the resale value of apple stuff is so high.

caek, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 08:54 (twelve years ago) link

so still not talking and surfing at the same time on verizon (or sprint)?

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2394164,00.asp#fbid=EJVw6I3isWR

that blows, I want to dump AT&T but I've found myself occasionally needing this feature, and the thuoght of verizon or sprint being slower data-wise doesn't fill me with hope. but AT&T fucking sucks in the bay area most of the time.

akm, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

ya but at&t sucks soooo much

max, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

i want to know what the sprint plan will look like

max, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

AT&T has decent service here, glad I'm in an area where they felt the need to install towers but it's still reasonably sparsely populated

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

wonder if the dual antennae will improve coverage or just transfer speed.

lukas, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

Isn't one for GSM and one for CDMA?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

Apple says "...iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive" so it seems like a different issue.

lukas, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

no, xp. they are now "world phones" i.e. they have both cdma and gsm chipsets. or at least the ones sold in the US will.

caek, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link
